Did you make it to the summit on your way up?
We stopped at the false summit (~6600ft). The true summit involved traversing a corniced ridge and scrambling 100' up through rime-coated rocks. It would have been an hour of extra effort for no more skiing, so we opted to go enjoy some of the powder!
Nice to see a TR of a less traveled tour. Always liked the looks of Goat and it seems to have skiing on several different aspects. I never seem to do the drive, though...
Thanks for the post.

Beautiful when mother nature lifts up her skirt isn't it?! Not often enough here in the PNW, but that is what makes it that much better- "absence makes the heart grow fonder" is how I believe the saying goes.
Good work up there ripping it TAY style!

cool pic of the wind transport over the packed tracks, surely shows the clear evidence of wind transport and alot of it. will be on the lookout. thanks for the update, it surely is worthy to note.

Wind has been a major force near the crest this week. I too had a similar episode on a N slope on silver peak the day prior. Low density transport. I'd watch these areas next week when the new snow loads them.

Nah, it was fricking dumpin when we skied out on Sunday... should be plenty of freshies assuming it's not all crsuted over by now. If you're going in with Morgan, he is the master of finding powder stashes!!!
ps. tell him hi from Sugar.

our turn starts Sunday. Hope you all didn't track it out too much.
Yep, mum's the the word!!!!
Our five-day trip Dec. 2006 was the best hut trip I've ever done, except for the drive that is 2 hours past nowhere. Economical, too.
But TELL NOBODY b/c we want to keep the secret all to ourselves, right? ::)

I just completed Avy level II from Mountain Madness. I highly recommend this organization. I also highy recommend Avy II for anyone spending a lot of time out in the snow.

Thanks for the report - I have had that dream myself, though unrealized, and have stuck to exploring the environs reachable by road end at mazama so far...
pictures?
Cold nights for camping indeed! I have often dreamed of a modest backcountry hut, placed in the footprint of the summer overlook area, it would make a nice friendly base for exploring in winter, BC style...

Way to go, O adolescent pow-hound.
8)! Rugged trip even on snomos. Picture a winter ascent in there before sleds/roads....
Thanks for that window into your travels. I have always wanted to get up in there in winter as well. I'd bet those slopes up by lib bell this winter have to be pretty loaded. Had the wind done its damage up that way as well?
I saw some waterfall ice in your picasa web pictures, does it look climbable? If so, how high would you estimate the ice goes up. Thanks
I can imagine that they're worried about folks inadvertently skiing into the lake. It's not hard to believe that rangers would be worried about less skilled folks following the tracks of someone much, much better, blowing an edge, and winding up in the drink. Can't say I'd agree with that logic, but I can see where it might come from.
Hmm. Sounds like a fun trip, especially the boat part. Wonder why they citate you? Doesn't make sense.

It looks like fun to ski down to the lake?
When we were there a few years a ranger said that it was illegal to ski on the lake side of the rim, and that any attempt to do so would be met with a citation/fine/etc. Still didn't stop us from dreaming about packing an inflatable raft, skiing one of the aesthetic chutes down to the lake, paddling out to Wizard Is...
Great shots Jessica!
It was my first time out that way as well. And the day before, a circumnav of Table Mountain too... 10 years ago, I had my inaugural taste of backcountry skiing at artist point, and the view of shuksan in bluesky, with fresh powder in the trees had me hooked!
A most wonderful day out indeed, in great conditions and great company! The horizon is nicely filled by a palette of snowy singularities, enchanting as just about anyplace in BC or the alps....

Hiya Scotsman! greetings and salutations from the land of Joyce and Wilde. Forgot skins eh :) well it happens to us all, no worries - usually it's my rasta buddies though! Hope you're doing well, glad to see a posting from home. Things here are great, although snowpack is minimal the foam on top of the Guinness is really creamy. Enjoy man enjoy.... do say hi to my buddies for me!

There's a lot of great terrain in 7 Lakes Basin, but it's 9 miles up the Sol Duc river trail, so it's at least a 3-day trip to make it worthwhile. I haven't skied it, but last summer a ranger told me some skiers go in right after the road opens in April. I'd like to try to hook up with a group to go there this spring.

Wow, I skied my August turns there. Pretty different. Absolutely beautiful pictures. Thanks for the inspiration.
Nice report. Nice Stuart area photos - are there some of the Chair trip out at Flickr too?
Funny comment on the poaching. I've always gone by the "it's only your line when you're looking back up at it" rule, but I am also typically the one being "poached" as I tend to like to get to the top of the things I climb versus cream-skimming only the powder slopes. I have learned to take it in stride.

Savegondor, glad that all that walking did yield you some good turns. We figured that you must have found something cause we didn't hear a peep out of ya until the afternoon.

These photos are amazing!! A perfect night for a tour! Hope you still had fun despite the "variable" conditions!!
my only addition, being the post holing dupe that I am, is that actually NE aspects were blower as well, the E aspects had mostly blower and some breakable crust, and it was the SE aspects (the approach that snowslut and company used) that were boiler plate nasty. I had two very nice runs on the terrain I could access via the highway 200 snowshoer's and 100 dog-walking boot packers had worn halfway to the top of Heather Ridge. They had even worn a trail up the PCT: So i walked u...
Nice shots Jess -- the shoulder seems fully recovered!
Lee, you could have just dropped that cornice onto the crown! Actually, just wondering about depth cause its hard to judge from those pics...looks to be around 2 metres...
