Thanks SG and Marcus!

Those pics were taken with my new 12 mp Cannon Elph with image stabilization. It's quite an amazing little camera.

Here's a full resolution crop from that last pic that gives an idea of the detail in can capture, even in low light, hand held with just the auto settings, flash off. For reference, Chikamin is about 13 miles away. Notice the snow blowing off the crest with the early morning easterly wind. There is a modest amount of .jpg artifa...
That last pic is a doozy Larry -- great view of Chikamin, et al.  Never seen it from that side.
NICE PICTURES  -- Especially the last one!!!!!
Wow Jim!!!
Those composites are really cool! Takes me back to that soul enhancing day!!
I am going to have to get one of those to frame... to remind me of the great winter of 07-08 :)
That looks like a cool place with a fair amount of verticle!  Nice that you can just zip up there is a short amount of time.....
Yep, skins on in split mode for the track out.

Although the lack of speed checking is directly related to my inability to ski well in split mode  ;D
Great poetry and images.. wish I was there! - Scott
Never let those nattering nabobs of negativity stop you from presenting whatever you think may be "useful" in a trip report! I do enjoy yours, Larry, and often watch for your campout stories in particular. Thanks for another fine one.

Did you have skins on on the way out? There were remarkably few attempts to check speed evident in the tracks.

Splitters dont speed check...we's need all the speed we can get to avoid getting out the poles ;D
Thanks indeed for the skintrack. It saved the usual wandering when looking for places to cross the mini-streams in the dark.

The fat solo track was my splitboard from a recon trip out towards Pratt Lake yesterday, glad it was of some help.

Meant to post something last night about the suprisingly good snow quality even down low. Looks like you scored a great day.
Thanks Larry!  Armed with some new knowledge, I hope my friend will feel comfortable getting out in the snow.  The "report" was well done, it made sense to me.  I also look forward to more tips like how you made custom booties.  I'm also into making things as light as possible.

I haven't been around TAY too long, but I would like to ditto what was said previously about your TRs.  Thanks.

Sweet! Are we to infer you washed the cream horns down with Old Style Pilsner?
Zap,

I'm not sure about the cat skiing, but I'm pretty sure they have a single ride life ticket to give you access to the bc on their backside. If you find out about the single cat ride this weekend I'd be interested in hearing.
My story:

Back in Roundup, Montana:

My brother and I were really itching for some turns...so when a snow storm dropped 1" of wet stuff that accumulated only on grass, we went around town stealing snow by rolling it up into 200lb balls which we deposited in the back of our pickup truck.  An hour or so of collecting snow from neighbors yards and two hours of depositing the snow on a 50yrd slope complete with a kicker, yielded at least 2 hours of butt-scratching, core-sho...
My most memorable ski descent of the "odd" was of the Mt Beacon Incline Railway line in Beacon, New York, in 1996.

I was living in upstate NY at the time in the lovely village of Beacon, just north of West Point.  From the downtown main street (as it was) one's eyes were drawn to the mountain overlooking town, the mountain from which the town got its name.  Smack dab in the middle of the face was the remnants of an old cable railway line that shot straight up from the...
nice video, need another strap there.
The entire gallery is impressive. Check out this night shot of a charge going off:

Ian,

Great trip report.  Anthony Lakes is awesome.  I skied the BC their a couple of years ago on a peak just across from the XC ski area.  It was steep with good tree skiing.  I can't remember the name of the peak, but it's an easy glide in from the parking area.
If you haven't seen them here is a link to some photos of the Stevens Pass slide. They are at the bottom of the page. Pretty crazy.

There were high gusting winds creating an up to six inch wind slab. Decided that with our complete lack of experience we didn't want to stay out there with the snow and wind increasing...dug a pit on the north facing aspect we wanted to ski. Not a bit moved in the compression test so we were good to go.

Welcome to the TAY Team.  If you did what you wrote you have...
Yep, that's a unique facet of vt snowriding.  My buddies and I thought jumping down different levels of a burned-out building on a hillside by the 3rd branch of the White River was a pretty good expression of snowboarding.    Stationary-12foot drop-flat landing-stop. snowboardings fun!
Nice TR Larry.  Great booties, too -- slipping around like a baby deer on a frozen lake, that's me and my booties.
Ian, Welcome to the group. Good to see a TR for Anthony Lakes.  Jill and I will be lift skiing there next Friday with a Shell 2 for 1 coupon.  I haven't skied there in a couple of years but remember the wonderful atmosphere at the area.

Are they still offering single ride cat skiing ?

SOunds like a great adventure ;) Way to make the most of it!

Great TR "Snoseeker".
How lucky can you get?  You're afforded the unusual opportunities of:
1. learning "Geezer TR NotIt",
2. attending a MadDog apre' ski SuperBowl party with killer burgers & fries,

Not It!!

Nice trip report, Snoseeker!  Thanks for the lift!

Thanks, MadDog, for another GREAT Sup...
Certainly had epic avy conditions today.  The patrol was bombing the N Back all morning.  The top few inches were wet from snow.  Consistant but heavy skiing.  Lots of evidence of wind transport on Norse Pk.

I was glad to get out of there w/o any slides crossing the road.
The this is ridiculous picture looks like a giant snow hippopotamus! Fun stuff thanks!
I just cought this thread but I think Larry R's BC creativity is really cool.  I hope to get to some of the places in your weekend trips.
TAY is almost the only website that IS worth my time; anyone who thinks it's useless can click somewhere else.

Larry,

A friend of mine that loves the outdoors has Raynauds syndrome....   We would both appreciate hearing your experience.  I've never met anyone besides him with Raynauds, let alone a fellow backcountry dude!  What luck!

Steve, here's a link to a draft I just put together. It has not been reviewed however by the TAY Dept. of Medicine...
Thanks so much for the map!!  Looking forward to more trip reports from you.

Being an east sider over here in Bend, Or I am abit courious about this area since all I have to do is drive up 97 for eastside "dry".

I could look at a map but what the heck.... Where is Rosyln near?  Seems like it beckons (looking at the pics....)  SG

SG, here is a map that should help:

skig. - 1. No.  2.  I've been to Wolf Creek a bunch and love the snow.  It's a good place in to find good skiing early in the season and does get a ton of snow (434" so far this year.)
Have you ridden around the Wolf Creek area (San Juans I believe).  I know they get a huge snow-pack similar to cascades in depth.  They can have a pretty long skinning season it seems....
Can you tell me where this 'area' is-- exactly (or close to...)?  4000' vert.  that is a nice nice number I must say.....

8,500 in Colorado?  The season lasts very long.  "Quality" may be a concern.

Let's face it, if you arrive in Colorado anytime other than Late July through September you should bring your skis, you should be able to find plenty of snow w/n a few hours drive.
Modified with some powder shots I cropped out - first Sean, then Wayne.  Deep powder skiing.
Updated with some digital magic (where have you been all my life, digital camera?).  My favorite sequence of the trip - look at the explosion of powder on that jump!

It's great when a week of pictures yeilds only a few choice ones 'cause it was snowing so hard all week!
Gee, thanks everybody! I'll see what comes out for this weeks TR. Off the menu probably.  :)

Clem, the TAY terms of use would prevent me from mentioning the B&B by name as the proprietor  is a good friend. But I will say that he's the same guy who runs the world famous Roslyn Trailbreaking Service upon which I have relied many times in the past, and his initials are JM.  ;)

Steve, I'll try to write up some lessons learned the hard way about Reynauds and p...
I've got friends in Woodland Park, CO - how long's the season tend to last at that elevation? When's best to drop in on them, skis in hand? :)

Thanks! It's the local stashes that sometimes make skiing fun!
Mack, that ridge to the east is the one we skied on the second lap. Met up with another group (mom & dad tele skiing, and at least one kid tele'ing really well!), and dad was familiar with that slope. We followed their lead avoiding a rollover off the top, and skiing down the east ridge edge, into the well-spaced trees (that drop down to the road). Nothing budged, no whumping. Same aspect as our pit, so that isn't surprising.

Yup, signed up for same week next year, so we...
There seemed to be enough on the roads for sleds on Sunday. Actually if the rain melts it out just a few inches then I could probably drive far enough on road 27 to have some decent options.
Cheater!  (I thought of that too.  ;)  )

Good info there; what did you think of the steep slope above your pit?  We considered going along the ridge E of Big Rock to get there but it was more work and most of the party were not strong skiers or avy-savvy.
If you have the same weekend next year maybe we'll see ya!
I'm pretty sure Crystal yanked that old chair out (moved it to gold hills) because those slopes had trouble holding snow...Don't think it would be much different now-a-days?
What do you think about snow machine access up to some of the trailheads?
Your info about the Bullions Basin Chair is correct
Brent, Great to see that you're still touring. Sounds like a wonderful trip.
