Amar hopes you don't mind posting any pictures prior to your approval, so he's going to do it anyway.  8)
Ken, I'm so glad you're still with us after this experience, and willing to share so that others might learn.

Hannah and I heard about your incident from the rangers at Paradise while registering for our Fuhrer Thumb trip that Sunday evening, the trip that would turn into a whiteout and an unexpected overnight bivy in a steam cave for me. Then a few minutes later, we spo...
Glad you made it out of this ok, thanks for sharing your story.

I was thinking the same thing but wasn't sure we could get out via Constance in four days...  Too bad the road to the Dosewallips TH has not been repaired!

Yeah, I figured a fast-paced four-day trip from Hurricane Ridge to the Dosewallips River if the road was open. Uncertainty about the road has contributed to my procrastination.  Your TR has got m...
I love seeing tr's from the olympics.  Due to procrastination and laziness, I so far have only brought surfboards anywhere W of Olympia.  I think it's unfortunate being as we have two incredible and skiable mountain ranges within easy driving distance.  Thanks for getting some stoke envoked in me for one!

Really nice.

That's the area I'd most like to ski in the Olympics. Your exit via Royal Basin is probably more logical than the way I was thinking, which was to continue to Constance Pass and come out the Dosewallips.

Great trip!

Thanks for the inspiring TR and pix. After backpacking in that area last summer I want to go back and ski it; it's great to hear someone was out there doing it this spring.
As a lover of remote, out of the ordinary, one-way/loop trips, that is an envious trip.  Thanks for sharing the trip and great pics.

Think there will be enough snow left on June 1?

Quite likely not.  Check http://www.mtspokane.com/webcam.html before you go, eh?

Yeah, wonder how it got named "Y Couloir"?  ;)

Good job NWAC for keeping us on our toes. We all make our own decisions and I hardly thought that the warnings were political scare tactics.

True that.  After a scary 2' slide on the 10th at Corral Pass, we had our share of shake-ups for the season.  I decided that instead of an ambitious volcano trip last weekend, I instead would take in the Clea...
way to rip it up Amar, you got quite a nice streak going.

looks like conditions are deteriorating quickly down there.

Thank you for the report and all of the great pictures. I am excited to finally get back out there at the end of the month.

the warnings probably did save a life or two this weekend

If that is all it saved, then IMHO it was worth it, that is of course in theory that it did save a life. Cheers to NWAC and maybe our legislators know that it is saving lives when the budget hat is passed around the lobby.

Personally, I felt that the warnings were merited, I have seen a lot of la...

Right on Erik, was this the trip you were talking about at White? If so, way to go. I really need to get into that area one of these days.

Nice to see pics and story from you. Awesome.
Looks like you guys are having way too much fun.  Great write-up and great photos!
I'm with Jason on this. The forcast kept our eyes open and kept us from some of our wishful objectives. We skipped the long run down the southfacing backside of  castle Saddle. Others had good luck on consolidated snow at ski areas. In the end you take the forcast and make the judgement given what you see with your own eyes and training. I for one wasn't for any creek crossings with what I was seeing .

Humbly, I don't really think that you can say that the avy forecast was overblown based on the fact that you skied Granite and it was good.  The slopes you skied are wind and sun hammered all winter (and usually crappy skiing, imo, but sounds like you hit it perfectly).

This face has slid about a million times this year and given the l...
funny, we were thinking about heading up there too, but settled on Crystal and the shorter drive. Looks good up there, even without powder. ;)
I think the forecast was perfect - the forecasters likely stared at all of their weather and snowpack data and concluded that it was possible that things could go big. John Morrow's photos suggest that they did - big, fast, and far. When statistics are low, fluc...
NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  What a cool looking route..........
Sounds like you checked things out on your own and had a good time.  That's awesome.

I don't recall seeing the forecast state that being on the snow is FOR SURE going to kill you.  It's...
A forecast is just that. Wind in places helped, but there was considerable wet sluffs out there. I'm certain many slopes went (sent a few big ones down myself) and just because you were comfortable where you were at, a broad based forecast is just a warning in general to keep your eye out. For me, on rainier, it was taking the temperatures into account and weighing the risks all the way to the summit. I felt like the warning was appropriate. We all kept our eyes open, maybe more than we oth...
Also on my top 10 but dood those Picket approaches hurt me.
I respect the purity of a trip to the Pickets without photography.  So when do the ETs hit the Degenhardt?  That's one where I'd really like to hear somebody else's perspective - with pics plz!

And please, ladies and gentleman, in the future let's not hear of this Sky S*** character, especially his private communications.  I've heard some really negative things about him and don't think too highly of him.  He's slathered me with f...
This January (or was it February?) when avalanche danger was "four times more than extreme" according to the authorities, we had the best powder day of the season. Though we were conservative, conditions were way more stable than everyone said.
I hears his ski ballet moves are hot!

I love the colors in your photos.  What's the secret?  Post production, polarizer...?

On these I did do some edit work. Looking at them now, I may have done too much on a few, but live and learn. I had trouble getting the exposures right and had to ajust the exposures afterward. I try never to add color unless I am working with RAW files. They need colo...
Cool ski route, eh?

Altasnob's pictures put things in perspective.
Great report and trip!  Great pics!

Mike ,Brenda ,
we thought about going that way but ended up in the tatoosh skiing north facing in much the same conditions. We were blessed with 8-12 mph wind .
glad you had a good day and nice shots!
So these pics must be of you guys:

What a sweet trip; Hotlum Bollum had gigantic suncups on it for my ski--I can imagine what a great run you had from the looks of the snow..That $20 also came in handy for me when I ascended standard s. side route on Mt.  Hood and  then skied Cooper Spur route.  The couple on the trail had never been to Timberline Lodge so with a 20 dollar bribe they got some extra site seeing in and I was back at the car by 1 pm.
Thanks for the fantastic report and pics!  Way to go...........
Nice report, great pictures, thanks!
Great day and some great photos, Jason.

I don't think I will ever go directly up the glacier again without a rope on such soft snow. Instead better to avoid all of it by going up the fan and Turtle.

IMO, the best route is across the flat part of the Nisqually Glacier, then directly west up the Wilson Glacier toward the cleaver to regain rocks circa 8k.  Much more direct and those parts of the glaciers are rather manageab...
It looks good to me.  ???
In spite of forecasts, sounds like you guys pounded out a nice trip!
Amar, thanks for the photos and report.  I'm going there next week.  Looks like the snow is melting fast.  I'm only hoping for a small patch just big enough to test some new skis that have come out of the oven.  Because I know you like to drive, how about you come down again for a quick ski ;).
Good to see you out and about Dan.  It is raining here in Amsterdam, but until today we really have only had 2 days of rain on our entire trip, so suppose were lucky for that.  looks to be too damn hot back home.

P.S.  I will need to get my May ski day in on Saturday the 31st!  You game?

Be well
Rusty thanks for being the Test case. I was kinda thinking that ,if anything the slopes of closed ski areas would be a good bet this weekend . for a bunch of reasons.
Hi Alan, can you drop me an email?  huskyrunnr"nospamplease"@msn.com

I'm using a Yaesu VX-7R.  I have it set up where it can run off AA's, 1.4 Ah rechargeable LiIon packs, a 30 Ah SLA or one of those foldable solar panels.  With the SLA, I can boost up to 35 Watts for several hours with a very small brick amp.
The last run with the dogs that Daniel and I made, my SPOT went belly up whereas I was making crystal clear 2M contacts through on...
