Being up on one vertical slice across your route yesterday had me thinking about what a wild tour that would be. We saw a beautifully braided set of corn-8s as we looked across toward Paradise from our choss-rock-perch at 9.2-9.3K on the Whitman Crest yesterday - you or someone else traversing toward White River getting a nice payoff just before crossing by Little Tahoma. I bet that trip will be well-branded in your memory forever.
Skiing across a wooden bridge yesterday seemed to get some of the forest duff off my bases :D.
author=Rusty Knees link=topic=10493.msg42511#msg42511 date=1214721627]I took a couple of skid/crashes when I edged across branches and wood avalanche debris, but had a great time.
Heh -- I got some free edge tuning yesterday when I skidded across a half-buried rock... Love the summer snowpack. :)
Our party skied Adams on Wednesday and Thursday (25th, 26th) and had good conditions. We elected to follow the drainage rather than the road and saved a bunch of time to our 7000 ft camp. We skied the sw chutes Wednesday and had somewhat soft, but overall excellent conditions all the way down (far skiers left chute held the best corn). We elected to high traverse at 7000 ft and with all the snow it took very little effort to get back to our camp. Thursday we skied off th...
Great report and congratulations on your trip! That is a grand outing.

TAY Van Pool showed up.I didn't know Tay had a van pool ? wheres that link ?
Rusty, A bunch of Tacoma skiers are planning on July 4th at Sunrise. Not sure if that coincides with Chutefest .Be fun if it does but what the hey, than you could go twice!
I'm inspired to head south, in spite of the high fuel cost. Another nice trip, it sounds like. I think you're going to know every rock and tree around Foss Peak, and probably make up nicknames for them.
When are you guys going to do the Sunrise trip and barbecue? Did I miss it? If not, I'll bring the brats. Cheers!

Yes the road was quite passable this evening as my son and I came back from a afternoon/evening tour, surprised to see conditions still remaining so firm with the heat down low. As always its nice to ski from the bumper.
To ski or not to ski, that is the question? Wether it is better to drop the knee with the hissers wizzing by, or forever regret the sweet flight that could have been!
My attempt at ski Shakespear. Good job Telemack!
A skier with a huge shovel and some time to kill was busy hacking away at the debris pile this morning as Becky and I walked by...by the time we were on our way down, cars were parked up near Windy Pass where the snow is continuous.
Here's what the tricky section of road looks like...looks like any ol' car could get through.
Snow was really nice corn around noon and a steady breeze kept the temps for getting too bad.

I only dozed off in the first bit, and then missed the last 15 min. before intermission when a vicious leg cramp launched me out of my seat.
I love this part of the TR. ;)
Thanks for the update. 20 minute brisk hike, hmmm ! Great shorts. ;)
A good trip and nice report Scott.
In reference to the decision to turn around it is easy to second-guess after the fact. We had just transitioned back to skis at about 10,900' and were starting to skin up the 30-35 degree slope when I felt a distinct settlement of a large area and dropped a couple of inches. That, along with the steeper slopes above and the incredible display of avalanche activity seen on the way up was enough for us. The unconsolidated snow we booted up below and th...

Looks like great turns! The second shot looks more impressive with the horizon straightened; you can add about 10 degrees to the angle of the slope there.
Looks like the snow was pretty good, too. How late into the year can you typically ski in MT?

Nice! Way to nail the MT turns! Any suggestions for August in MT? I'll be out in Bozeman, Missoula, Kalispell, so my intuition was telling me high up in glacier...other thoughts?
This season's snowpack seems to be hanging in there pretty well (I skied a well covered Mt. Blackmore yesterday). July should be fun. But your intuition fo...

Living is dying; all the living you do kills you a little.
But a little dying is no reason not to live.
Life IS killing you. You don't have a choice--but you do get to choose how you live.
Try to live a life of which you will not regret dying.

Cem Nice Job! you are inspiring. ;D
I know that it is a big equipment upgrade but for future reference disk brakes may cure the rim problems.
Good luck in your travels.
Keep up the good work.

Nice TR of a good trip Sam. (I finally finished it) I'm glad that you found good partners and conditions. The June powder turns were a great stroke of luck. Lately when I leave to ski my daughter asks me if I am skiing with "Scot-man or Sam." I think that you made a good impression.
BTW- Thanks alot. My inbox is full of people who want to come to Bremerton and play Super Nintendo.

Sweet! Thanks for reminding me: "I hate my job, I hate my job, I hate my job."
thats a bad bike, awesome stuff Cem!
Think I saw you riding west toward Diamond Lake/ Crater Lake/ Mt. Thelson In early May as I was driving back to Bend after doing Thelson. Also think I saw you riding Century Drive up-- going toward Bachelor. Love the purity of your adventure...Very COOL! Keep on ridin' and skiin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jason, what I seem to detect from your writing about your near miss is some degree of confusion in understanding where skill ends and luck begins. The Cascade snowpack allows steep skiing on a regular basis but this norm might short-circuit route selection as skiers seek new challenges. "Unusual conditions" are often cited when the snow does not behave as the skier was expecting. In my experience "unusual conditions" are not that unusual but rather the result of myopic focus....
thanks for the awesome tr. I skiied one of those same coulie in october a few years back under a full moon. it was redicouls skiing, as it was so thin and rocky.
I did actually improvise these a little, I took out the removable arrest piece, cut off a couple inches of the steel, drilled a couple holes, then bolted it back onto the handle, a little lighter than the original. I also put carbon fiber lower pieces on.
I feel that you all have good things to say. There is no me against you as I think is understood. But it should be noted that this story was a warning, not about going to extremes, as this thread has generally developed into a discussion of, but more about how something moderate can sting you when you let your guard down. Such as your Kautz Glacier trip Gregg_C (actually you didn't let your guard down, but chose to continue well aware of the danger). I feel I could've explained that be...

List of names of former climbing partners killed in the mountains. Some well known and some less so. The events were varied and represented the wide ranging activities that folks I knew were doing; an avalanche on Shishipangma, cornice collapse on Logan, slide with a 4 ft. crown heli guiding outside of Nakusp, collapse on the summit ridge of Everest.....

Head up towards Source Lake and either Pineapple or Chair Peak. Tons of snow starting from the upper lot -- no hiking required as of Wednesday night. I boot packed two sections -- 1. a shortcut to get me directly into Chair Peak basin, and 2. Last couple hundred feet to the col between Bryant and one of Chair's sub-summits.
Skinning was good and the corn snow was lots of fun!

Headed up after work with EKB to get some fresh air and a few turns yesterday (Wednesday). We were walking on mostly wet ground up to about 3,400 ft (car was at 3,100 ft) and then on decent snow from there up. We didn't bring skins, but the booting was just fine - made it up to the midway for great views and some good chocolate - although it took a bit longer than 15 minutes!

I thought you didn't hike for snow ;).
Thanks for the update - not a whole lot worse than last weekend. It leaves me wondering if that darned road to Windy Pass that some of us are eyeing (because you can indeed ski from the bumper for a short window, despite your hiking a bunch there due to route selection issues last year ;) ;)) is going to be blocked down low still...

I don't know if you'll see this but there is a Unicorn Pk in Yosemite up at Tuolumne Mdws. You could ski and climb if you like in the beginning of June
Been there done THAT! Nice writing by the way...always fun to read.
Regarding probably not possible to ski from summit of N. Sister: rumour has it that years ago the alpinist/big wall climber/ Oregon and Alaska (and tons of other areas...) new route pioneer from '60-80's--soloed the Nose El Cap in '68 or '69 (and possibly still new routing...)--- skied from the summit of the N. Sister. A logical route choice, conditions permitting-- would be down the east side ascent route, 3rd class-one pitch (summer route..) and down...
