Ah, yes. Adams on Saturday. I spent a couple of hours just below the Lunch Counter waiting for a change in the weather. Gave up and rode down. This was the view, thought as you said, the riding was pretty good.
I heard you might be at Table Mountain today, and I had my eyeballs peeled for ya. If I knew you were heading to Helliotrope, I might have gone out there instead. Sounds like you found better snow than us, too.

Hi, Andy. We almost crossed paths. You certainly got in more skiing. Too bad we didn't meet -- we would have invited you to a good fire and supper at WR CG in the camper. Fine dining when the other halves are along!
Thank you my son for a great weekend! Now can you get all my gear dry, skis waxed and ready for next weekend while I'm at work! ;D

the snow went from dirty, postholed, moderate suncups to smooth clean corn that would have been considered excellent in May!
Gary, we've all been looking for it all weekend---sounds like you guys found it!
Always trust the old masters.
Hi Don. For some reason the weather seemed a little better over on the Frying Pan. Maybe you were intercepting the rain showers for me!
great rpt. -- photos are excellent. reminds me of my home range, Sierra NV. would have been cool with some sun, peace out- Rob
good times, hope to get up there again after all the "groomers" hit the slopes.

Thanks for the timely update.
It is amazing how much snow has melted in the cascades in one week!
Looking forward to our climb tomorrow.
Thanks,
Joe
Might see you there ;).

I was up there that day as well. My first day snowboarding in 2008, and it was KILLER! Great corn. Firm on the way up, surfy on the way down. I strapped in on the very summit, which apparently you can't do most years. For anyone thinking of trying it, GO! It should have enough snow for another couple weeks.

Mrs. Doober, baby Doober, Doggy Doober and I got up on the 1st as well. All in all a fine outing. The meltouts on the lower bit made for some interesting travel, but the weather and turns were perfect. By the way, this will be baby's 7th consecutive month of skiing / sliding and he isn't even 7 months old yet! We'll see if we can't keep the streak going.

But a passing Ranger told us it was illegal to build kickers in the National Park. That so? I never knew.
Weird. ??? I see boarders building jumps around the Paradise area all the time and I've never seen anyone hassle them.
Skied Silver yesterday (July 4) with Brian and birthday boy Andy (lowrider). The rain has soften the top inch or so of the suncups, but it's still a hard bumpy ride. We ascended W bowl, descended E bowl. Still lot's o' snow up there.
Fine job gang. Snowbell says it was a good double-header.
[My wife finally has to admit that I'm not making up these Cyber friends in my mind.
Don't tell my wife---she thinks all my ski buddies ARE real. 8)

Had to add photos of the illegal kicker and the pond skimming.

wow, that looks like fun. ::)
A good day to go topless though.

I've been skiin' Shasta/ Lassen for 12 seasons and you can actually be driving along in the Lassen area and you'll see a small cloud -- and the poor things will be smeared on your windshield. July is the season for butterflies.
Now,
Lisa if you where taking course on journalism and the importance of "headlines" you would have renamed your report " Randy Beaver Grabs Bush". Would get a lot of hits with that title. ;D

Another bit of ribbon...good going! Does look scenic!
Thanks again for the lodging, Don.Glad to see that you were having fun in the snow while we drove back to Canada. No problems at the border; I was checking out the 200 photos that I had taken on Adams and MSH shortly after lunch. I still haven't put together TRs yet.
Whew! Thanks for your stories, jd and Lee. For the record, I was never referring to objective hazard, I was referring to human error. Nobody's judgement is perfect, but we can always try to improve.
Let's cross our fingers for those crazy Hummels. Jason called me from near the summit of Dome yesterday. From today's weather on komotv.com:

My mind/body went into frantic survival mode sprinting for the closest solid looking rock which I reached just as house sized blocks of ice started to fly over the cliff a to my side. I jammed my hands into a crack, but found it was just the back side of a loose block that moved out as I twisted my fist. Giving up I felt an incredible sadness, and anger with myself in choosing a route with such obvi...
Great trip report and pics, this traverse is one of my all time favorites. Props to Ben for splitboarding the tour, especially in leather mountaineering boots. After my ride down to Moraine Lake, I was like, that's it?!? But I guess it’s called a traverse after all. I recall “breathing a collective sigh of relief” a lot after each seemingly never ending objective … getting over the schrund, finding the right col, climbing out of Moraine Lake, making it back in time before Good Food cl...

Just for the record, the Dirtbad Diaries piece was produced by Fitz Cahall ("fitz" in reply #60 above). Keith was just passing along the word. Thanks Keith.
Thanks for getting this tr up Matt! Was a great trip with you and Jim and look forward to more adventures this summer.
Thanks for the confession/TR Jason - it obviously it struck a cord. While your initial post might have been written in the passion of the moment (and apparently didn't exactly communicate what you wanted) it has led to another good thread on TAY. I think we all debate/think about the risks of our sport and weigh the cost/benefit. Many of us old timers feel lucky to have survived our youthful hardcore adventures, and just want to have fun (and read about other's adventures). Whil...
Wow Chris, a definite retreat of the snow since last week when Brett & I were on Shot 6 (also June 24, though without crossing paths with you - despite keeping an eye out).
One note of advice for those seeing a positive Shot 6 snow report and planning to head that way: hike it from below (on the cat track) straight up to the cliffs, don't bother dropping in from above/side (as you would during the lift served season). The downclimb entrance to the slope from the woods i...

Maybe a picture of the suncups will help someone. July 2nd

Thanks for the great TR Zap and to all for great company. It was quite a congenial group with smiles even brighter than an intense sun. Great tour planning, Mad Dog, and guiding/pictures Ron. I think I was getting dehydrated-Ron's water purification saved the day, again thanks!

Schweet! did you do one of the north face couloirs of Blackmore? I remmember there is a lot of cool terrain in that area, skiing the Great One, on Sac changed my life. any pics?
The Blackmore top chutes are money right now; I skied from the summit down the drainage to the flats, then booted back over the ridge, and then down the SE face. No photo...
Thanks for the TR and great photos, I love the colors in Climbing to the Boston-Forbidden col.. I've gotta do this one someday.
Great report and photos. We were wondering about you guys as we looked down to the melting of Morraine Lake. Glad you found a way across! Congrats on finishing the tour in two days and negotiating the difficulties along the way. Paul and I did it in 3 days two years ago earlier in May http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=4764.0
Definitely a classic traverse.
Definitely a classic traverse.
We were the group of skiers next to you at the trail head. Nice trip report and photos. It's good to see you had a great trip after changing plans on the fly. I agree with you, this is also one of my favorite places in the Cascades.
Thanks for all the updates. Was thinking of a possible trip there this weekend.

Wow, glad everybody is Ok!
Good writing Lisa, you had me gripped!
Thanks Scotty, I work on my writing as I meet with some serious writers once a week and they really are good. One has a PHD in literature and two others a Masters and another, Garth Stein just publised a novel called, The Art of Racing in the Rain, so when my feeble attempts are noticed it makes me...
Hiking to about 3600 feet. then continuous snow.
Congratulations on completing the circumnav Gary! That's a great and inspiring trip. Sounds like you made some really good route choices and had a good weather window. I share your respect for the mountain and its enormity that comes with the remoteness of this traverse. Well done.

If I-5 is too busy Seattle to Olympia, a very pleasant alternative, only 30 miles longer and quite likely shorter timewise, is I-90 to I-82, then US97 through Toppenish, then west from Maryhill (thanks Brian!)

Nice chute Chris.
River crossing looked sketchy though.
I was on a tour with Charles on the interglacier two years ago and when crossing the Interfork, one of our party,( not me or Charles )fell in, full submersion. After stripping down ( not a pretty sight) and drying clothes partly on some sun baked rocks, the tour continued. I was impressed .

Dan, nice tracks on a classic line that was a bit fatter awhile back. It is amazing that there are some beautiful lines that don't require epic long slogs. ;)
the enhanced version of the dirtbag diaries story The Crusade is now on-line:
"Finally, we’ve got a special treat for you – The Crusade Enhanced. Photos by Jason Hummel, Sky Sjue and Ben Manfredi. Video by Phil Fortier. There are some sweet shots from over a decade of Cascade steep skiing. Skiing these peaks is a feat in itself – stopping to take the photos is another epic task in itself."
