On the 5th Scotsman, Stewie and I climbed the central line on Table above upper Bagley Lake in steady rain, blowing wind, and small but hard suncups-pretty miserable.  So much for the
"Better in the North Cascades" forecast/hope.

It was an unpleasant surprise to see how much backpackers'-type trash there was in Bagley Lakes Basin from snow campers.

We had much better conditions the 6th on Heliotrope Ridge.  See TR from Stewie.
Nice trip!  It was a soggy weekend all 'round, that's for sure.  It made for some nice corn-surfing though...
Trumpet, did your group of four arrive at Piker's right behind another group of four?  Two guys, two girls, all wet?  If so, pleasure to meet you.  I was the wet one on the left. ;)
You might ask Garth  ;)    Hope you don't get a ticket in 6 months!
Jill and I met Jimmy and Jeff in the upper Mt. Baker Ski Area parking lot.  As a side note, the footings for the new lift are being poured and the parking lot has the new lift towers.  We let the boys skim the sun cups while we enjoyed an early lunch.  The sun cups are getting BIG.  We put on the skins and ski crampons which helped the sun cup bridging. We were able to stay on snow until joining Jimmy and Jeff above the chutes.  But the route from the parking lot is very serpentine.  The chute we...

Miss Olga Bolstad won it, beating all the men who entered.

But a passing Ranger told us it was illegal to build kickers in the National Park.  That so?  I never knew.

Boy, I'd sure like to deconstruct this rule, if it exists.

Is it illegal to shovel snow in a national park? Does that include building igloos? Is it illegal to jump over a naturally occurring pile of snow? Or is it only illegal to jump over a pile...
Stewie here, accidently posted in my dads account.
In future, when posting beautiful pictures of snowy mountains on blue bird days, Put a Mature rating so that I know to check them first before i let my father see them and get any ideas.
By the way nice flowers! :D
Sorry about that Stewie  ;). At a little after 6 on Saturday, our party connected by phone and agreed that the National Weather Service's newly depressing forecast warranted a change of plans, and so instead of heading up to the Baker ski area, we headed east for a hike (yes, no skis  :-[ :'(), which turned out to be really nice and full of flowers and all, but I kept wondering what the day was like up your way. Thanks for letting me know.
Based on your post, it looks like we were parked a couple cars down from you. Though she doesn't know me, I've seen Dorothea skiing twice now this year (the other time down @ Eagle Pk) and hope to be out skiing at that age! Very impressive.

We also saw the, uh, back-country traveler in jeans and had the same reaction.
We didn't even leave the parking lot on Saturday. Well at least with skis/boards. We bailed on that idea and just hiked up to just below tree line. Then headed out and hung out in Hood River for the rest of the weekend.

Nice meeting you in the parking lot buell.
Sorry we missed you. As Stewie says, Table mountain on Saturday was pretty wet and slopes where surprisingly hard but steeper stuff was not too suncupped although you had to be careful as if you fell you where going for a ride. We skinned/booted up on of the central colouirs on the main Table mountain face ( past the Blueberry chutes). We got above one rock band and decided to proceed no further as it was pretty firm.

Helliotrope Ridge and lower Coleman Glacier was really nice. Hazy s...
Great Geezer glacier going! Thanks for the info on the crevasses .
Ah, yes.  Adams on Saturday.  I spent a couple of hours just below the Lunch Counter waiting for a change in the weather.  Gave up and rode down.  This was the view, thought as you said, the riding was pretty good.
I heard you might be at Table Mountain today, and I had my eyeballs peeled for ya.  If I knew you were heading to Helliotrope, I might have gone out there instead.  Sounds like you found better snow than us, too.

Like Jeff said, follow the masters...
Hi, Andy. We almost crossed paths. You certainly got in more skiing. Too bad we didn't meet -- we would have invited you to a good fire and supper at WR CG in the camper. Fine dining when the other halves are along!
Thank you my son for a great weekend! Now can you get all my gear dry, skis waxed and ready for next weekend while I'm at work! ;D

the snow went from dirty, postholed, moderate suncups to smooth clean corn that would have been considered excellent in May!

Gary, we've all been looking for it all weekend---sounds like you guys found it!

Always trust the old masters.
A few pictures.

Ridge to Cathedral

Traversing under Cathedral.  Notice "freeheel4ever"'s binding choice.

Hi Don. For some reason the weather seemed a little better over on the Frying Pan. Maybe you were intercepting the rain showers for me!
great rpt. -- photos are excellent. reminds me of my home range, Sierra NV. would have been cool with some sun, peace out- Rob
good times, hope to get up there again after all the "groomers" hit the slopes.

Thanks for the timely update.
It is amazing how much snow has melted in the cascades in one week!
Looking forward to our climb tomorrow.
Thanks,
Joe

Might see you there ;).

Strong work, Doober, Doober, Doober, and Doober!
Great job guys, looked like a good day was had and the views were amazing!

Chris
I was up there that day as well.  My first day snowboarding in 2008, and it was KILLER!  Great corn.  Firm on the way up, surfy on the way down.  I strapped in on the very summit, which apparently you can't do most years.  For anyone thinking of trying it, GO!  It should have enough snow for another couple weeks.

Mrs. Doober, baby Doober, Doggy Doober and I got up on the 1st as well. All in all a fine outing. The meltouts on the lower bit made for some interesting travel, but the weather and turns were perfect. By the way, this will be baby's 7th consecutive month of skiing / sliding and he isn't even 7 months old yet! We'll see if we can't keep the streak going.

Weird.  ??? I see boarders building jumps around the Paradise area all the time and I've never seen anyone hassle them.
Skied Silver yesterday (July 4) with Brian and birthday boy Andy (lowrider).  The rain has soften the top inch or so of the suncups, but it's still a hard bumpy ride.  We ascended W bowl, descended E bowl.  Still lot's o' snow up there.
Fine job gang.  Snowbell says it was a good double-header.
[My wife finally has to admit that I'm not making up these Cyber friends in my mind.

Don't tell my wife---she thinks all my ski buddies ARE real.  8)
edit to add current picture of matier NW face from recently

Had to add photos of the illegal kicker and the pond skimming.

wow, that looks like fun. ::)

A good day to go topless though.

I've been skiin' Shasta/ Lassen for 12 seasons and you can actually be driving along in the Lassen area and you'll see a small cloud -- and the poor things will be smeared on your windshield. July is the season for butterflies.
Nice trip.  Wish I could have joined you.
Now,
Lisa if you where taking  course on journalism and the importance of "headlines" you would have  renamed your report " Randy Beaver Grabs Bush". Would get a lot of hits with that title. ;D
Another bit of ribbon...good going!  Does look scenic!
Thanks again for the lodging, Don.Glad to see that you were having fun in the snow while we drove back to Canada. No problems at the border; I was checking out the 200 photos that I had taken on Adams and MSH shortly after lunch. I still haven't put together TRs yet.
Whew!  Thanks for your stories, jd and Lee.  For the record, I was never referring to objective hazard, I was referring to human error.  Nobody's judgement is perfect, but we can always try to improve.

Let's cross our fingers for those crazy Hummels.  Jason called me from near the summit of Dome yesterday.  From today's weather on komotv.com:

Strong to severe thunderstorms continue to roll through the Pu...

My mind/body went into frantic survival mode sprinting for the closest solid looking rock which I reached just as house sized blocks of ice started to fly over the cliff a to my side. I jammed my hands into a crack, but found it was just the back side of a loose block that moved out as I twisted my fist. Giving up I felt an incredible sadness, and anger with myself in choosing a route with such obvi...
Great trip report and pics, this traverse is one of my all time favorites. Props to Ben for splitboarding the tour, especially in leather mountaineering boots. After my ride down to Moraine Lake, I was like, that's it?!?  But I guess it’s called a traverse after all. I recall “breathing a collective sigh of relief” a lot after each seemingly never ending objective … getting over the schrund, finding the right col, climbing out of Moraine Lake, making it back in time before Good Food cl...
author=jd link=topic=10439.msg42807#msg42807 date=1215105148]Great slide show Keith! When I read your first post about The Dirtbag Diaries I thought it was a joke. Keep up the good work.

Just for the record, the Dirtbad Diaries piece was produced by Fitz Cahall ("fitz" in reply #60 above). Keith was just passing along the word. Thanks Keith.
Thanks for getting this tr up Matt!  Was a great trip with you and Jim and look forward to more adventures this summer.
Thanks for the confession/TR Jason - it obviously it struck a cord. While your initial post might have been written in the passion of the moment (and apparently didn't exactly communicate what you wanted) it has led to another good thread on TAY. I think we all debate/think about the risks of our sport and weigh the cost/benefit. Many of us old timers feel lucky to have survived our youthful hardcore adventures, and just want to have fun (and read about other's adventures). Whil...
Wow Chris, a definite retreat of the snow since last week when Brett & I were on Shot 6 (also June 24, though without crossing paths with you - despite keeping an eye out).

One note of advice for those seeing a positive Shot 6 snow report and planning to head that way: hike it from below (on the cat track) straight up to the cliffs, don't bother dropping in from above/side (as you would during the lift served season).  The downclimb entrance to the slope from the woods i...
Maybe a picture of the suncups will help someone. July 2nd

Thanks for the great TR Zap and to all for great company. It was quite a congenial group with smiles even brighter than an intense sun. Great tour planning, Mad Dog, and guiding/pictures Ron. I think I was getting dehydrated-Ron's water purification saved the day, again thanks!
