Thanks for the TR. Our group was the skiing group carrying our skis that you have a picture of at Telemarktips. It was a great day to be up there, for sure. The snow was incredible for July 1. I skinned for a little ways up the rocky gully but decided I was more efficient carrying. Some of the others skinned a little higher from that picture, all the way up. I beat them by 45 minutes so was happy with my choice. Being a bit of a rookie skinner, it was ea...
Nice job not getting rolled into the mess -- it was a zoo up there. Did you come down past the bottom of the Hogsback around noon? We (four skiers) were hanging out just above the White River around then, getting ready to head down. Too much mania above and the legs were tired anyway... great skiing from there down.

Nice report, thankyou.
Sounds like a bunch of carnage.. I hope everyone is ok.
Carnage is an accurate description. It looked like a battlefield up there.
The woman that got tagged by the rock said that she was okay. She's lucky that it hit her arm and not her head considering that the rock was traveling about half the speed...
Nice report, thankyou.

Quite a few years ago, I lost my "summit fever" and focused on enjoying the best descent turns. It's helped me in my 60's stay relatively intact. ;)
Ohh..That's good news Zap, since I never had summit fever, that means I could be intact into the 70's?
Nice report Loofus nice vert!
I agree. A bit of a ways in, so it doesn't get much action. My question on the other site was going to be whether this was easier to access in the winter via the pct, and a lift assist at Stevens. A map answered my question...
I took some photos of the area from windy point mid June if you want a somewhat decent look. Only the first twelve, but 13 looks nice too.. Sorry for the crappy pics.
edit:picture 11 is not the suprise lake area, it's on the east side...

hmm...tough call, SW probably out by then. Probably melted out south approach to Pikers by then, below that it will be a haul up the trail with the gear-good luck.

The scene when I reached the hogback was almost comical as slow climbing parties flailed around, displaying numerous, awkward forms of self-arrest. It ceased to be comical when I realized that they were dodging rockfall. After talking to several climbers, it was apparent that the route was clogged with many inexperienced parties and that they were dislodging large amounts of rock from the upper section of the chute. One experienced climber claimed he had never seen so much rock...
Heh -- I had no idea Lunch Counter was that melted out. We never saw anything beyond 150 feet. Glad you go the weather -- the ski down was just buttery smooth, wasn't it? Great stuff.
I'm thinking about heading down to adams this weekend. couple of questions: where did you hit the snow line? when did you hit skinnable/continuous snow? How far was the hike in without snow? Thanks :)
I skied it Sunday. There is a decent amount of downclimbing through rocks at the bottom of Gunsight before climbing out to the ridge.
The lower Gunsight looks gnar! Those rocks mean a short carry to the lower snowfield? I was meaning to get up there after work this week.
How long is it going to be "do-able"?
Way to stay safe! The top portion of gunsight is always a bit harry with the exposure this late in the season. Always nice when everyone comes back unharmed.

Joe ,Nice report! Dreaming of smooth snow here . Which road system did you use ?
You selected the perfect ascent/descent day. Glad to hear someone had smooth corn recently. I think I loosened a filling on the sun cups this weekend - really. ;)
Way to nail it Joeda! Lunch counter is looking really melted! thanks for the info!
Hey Jim, Zap & Jill, thanks for great company on another fun day out on the snow. Thanks Zap for finding the smoothest of the suncups.
Jim, the aircraft carrier dispensation sounds OK by me---maybe jumping off the deck at least once in the month would count as an alternative. Of course you'd have to do it with skis on ;).
I found out I need to be back in Seattle by 6:30 on Thursday evening; maybe that day could work for the Heliotrope trip. I could play hooky on...

Not hard, but most of the night. We were warm and dry. I see you made it to Baker and worked for some good turns, too!
Looked like an interesting weekend.
Way to work the weather, sorry there was not better weather on Adams.
Good job, it looked like fun, I was looking at the Snow Dome on Hood and that looks ripe for the picking.

Thanks for the great info! I'm planning to head up there with some friends this weekend. I'll be on skis. They'll be on foot. How firm was the snow? Did it freeze overnight? I'd hate to take them up there only to watch them wallow in thigh deep slush!
Thanks!
It was nice and firm, with only a few centimeters ski penetration. Booti...
Thats a awesome area I've passed it in the summer on the PCT thinking it had amazing skiing potential.

Good to meet you Trumpetsailor and your merry band of skinners. I didn't get to see anyone ski. I could hardly see my partner! We hung out for about 2 hours just getting colder and wetter. We left right after saying bye to you at the rock ridge. The snow was nice however.
Fremont Propers North side is okay but the look out area is gone.
Nice punishment for missing all those powder days last winter, Mac. But a day in the mountains is always better than a day underwater.

In brief explanation and with a nod to Kam, Kelvin, Cass, Allyson et al..., the J-o-M is a purely mathematical expression of feet climbed vs. feet skied. All in all, certainly a 100%...
In my defense, the sun did peek out on Mt. Adams near 2200m. It disappeared shortly thereafter but that wasn't stipulated in said proclamation.
And Becky, we saw an artic fox so that probably contributed to the 95% rating. But then again, Anastasia emptying out her ski boot was probably a more significant contributor the other way.
But the upper White River Glacier section on Mt. Hood definitely had the goods. That was about as perfect corn conditions as one...

Definitely - I always thought it was just a great area to backpack in to, but seeing it with snow only made me appreciate it more!
I'm not sure exactly where the west rib is, but this picture taken yesterday from the trail may help. It shows the northwest side of Jefferson including Jeff Park Glacier, Russell Glacier basin, and the upper west face...

Heh -- yeah, that was a theme for the day.
He was right about Sunday morning though, to our great surprise.

Nice job guys! The sunshine on Hood must have felt soooo good after skiing in the rain on Saturday -- what a nice reward. :) Can't wait to see pics and/or viddy.
Oh, and I like this, " It would burn off by 2200 meters, said Andy." He, he .... ;)

Beautiful...BTW, were you able to tell if the W. Rib on your drive in had good coverage? Jeff Park is the place isn't it!! Nice to be away from the crowds to... Thanks for the TR.
Sounded like like some good turns for a Hikefest. Did it rain much in the evening/night?
Stewie, nice TR. Good call on moving to Baker on Sunday. As we were on I-5 returning from Table Mtn, I said to Jill - "we should have checked out ..."
Cool trip.
Great report, good info.
Thanks, Marcus and crew.

Nice work you guys! Way to push through on Adams and rally for Hood. It's great that Adams still managed to pull off a high rating after such a wet climb. I guess 6,000' of corn can offset quite a few negatives.

We had much better conditions the 6th on Heliotrope Ridge. See TR from Stewie.
Grrrr.
So who wants to explore Heliotrope with me? I'm free just about every day except Wednesday.
Scotsman-I held back from gnawing it........

Nice! Way to push through in the drizzle!! We on the other hand, not wanting to hump our skis up the El Dorado trail and sit on the Inspiration Glacier in a cloud for three days, took our skis for a day hike up to Cascade Pass on Friday where we achieved a Joy-o-Meter rating of approximately 12%. However if you add in the number of cute marmots we saw, then my personal Joy-o-Meter goes up to at least 50%. :) Glad you guys got in so many turns!

2 big days in a row. Just to be clear: Can you now drive to Cold Springs CG on Adams?
Absolutely, without a problem. Road's 100% clear.

The trail to Heliotrope Ridge was shorter than I had thought, although there were several messy blowdowns. We saw 2 skiers on the trail and were on their tracks, too. Who were you?
The snow was silky on Heliotrope & Coleman. We climbed to 6850' just above the first crevasses, did turns down to our sneakers at the first campsites, and cut skiers's left to run the longes line that linked to the central creek. The only cups were below treeline---but...

Nice report -- too bad the weather didn't cooperate for you.
That's the stiffest telemark binding I've seen, I think. ;)

Marcus,
Were you the group in the silver/gray Astro Van? My wife and I were the ones on the White VW Vanagon right next to you if it was. I was wondering how you guys were doing. As my previous post said we didn't even leave the car. Every time we went to leave it started raining and a little harder each time. Made it hard to motivate leaving the car.
