Skied off of Mt. Shasta from Bunny Flat today. Conditions were warm with a sun breaking through the hazy cloudy layer off and on, enough to give us hope it would soften up. It got warm enough on Southeast-Southery aspect at around 11:45to 1:30 respectively to be a somewhat consistent corn. Probably climbed up to around 9800' or so. Not much snow up there only 2-3 feet maybe 4 in some s...
That makes more sense -- Jove's upper slopes are pretty smooth, though who knows what they look like after the weather we've had. Rock looks like a fun ski!

According to the map it's "Rock Mountain"
Agreed, that looks like the upper portion of the west slope of Rock Mtn to me.
Have yet to ski it......

use picasa from google. it's free. export the pic at a low quality but a high resolution and still keep the file size under 200k

i dunno...it was north of the highway behind the first ridge. it's also on the second pic at the top in the background behind the ridge.

some photos and goals:
Anyone skied Indian Head Peak? Is this a picture of it???
Second picture is of the wet snow slide that ran all the way from the summit of Jim Hill about 2000 verts down.
Third pic: is this Jove Peak?

That would be great. Thanks Dave.
I included a pic of the slide I came across as well. Sorry about the quality. I had to reduce them quite a bit. If you want to original that you can zoom in on let me know and I can email it to you.
I was with gorp yesterday.

Jim, Roosevelt looked pretty good, not outstanding coverage but definitely in.
BobS, I wasn't taking the pictures that day but out of the other guys' pics I've seen there aren't any good shots of the route. From Source Lk. up to the peak is a mess of debris and trees but we did see an uptrack.

I got some good pictures of Chair yesterday from Snoqualmie Mt. I will try and post tonight if you are still interested. FYI there was a lot of point releases above 5500ft where it had warmed up quite a bit. They all ran about 500ft.
Excellent music... great transitions... nice editing... GREAT video!!
Here's a link to a video from our trip there last Leap Day. Snow was quite nice, the yurt worked and snow was quite stable, but of course we didn't dig to the ground, or have local knowledge on our side.

Thanks for the history lesson telemon that is very cool,I love the fact people made it a day trip to get up the local mountains!
No offence to anyone but I think I tried the ponytail for a while back in the day!
I can thank Trevor Peterson for that one![legendary steep skier!

Wow, the description of those snow blocks and the crowns is sobering. I've seen a few wet slides up there, and started one shallow slab slide last year, but I never worried too much about going up to Jim Hill but I'm going to think twice now. Too bad you had the icy crust - and hope that's not your only experience of Jim Hill, cause when it's good, it's very good.

When I started X-C skiing 25 years ago, two of my favourite places were Mt.Seymour and the Hollyburn area. I heard stories of mostly northern European immigrants that hiked all day from sea-level Vancouver to get one run down. I never thought that I might, someday, have similar aspirations as I seek my turns all year.
Two of the first peaks that I bagged on my skinny, skin-less skis were Seymour and Hollyburn. While I am usually lift skiing on the north shore now (as I did today at Cyp...

uh, yeah...sorry buddy, but nothing about your shots indicate trailer trash. see my shots and then consider that was the daylight hours.
Good report and great pictures.

Being a non-local I forgot that most the local access touring near Bend is a jaunt and quick, quiet tours are more difficult, especially on weekends.
Yes, there certainly is NOT a need to have more snowmachines in an already concentrated area.
I wish you the best of luck on the proposal to reduce the impact of the Tumalo location.
I always wanted to ski off of Paulina Peak, but the approach could be a long one also.

There is a new Law Enforcement officer, not State Patrol that has been ticketing people like crazy on the Crystal Access road. Speed limit is 35 from highway 410. He was really hitting people by the dozens as you get to Crystal area and it drops to 20MPH.
Beware!

Yeah, one could easily park across the road (or up the road) and walk or skin to the Butte.
And I agree about the snowmachines. The issue with Tumalo Butte is that is the only local access for a 'quick' morning or afternoon ski shot in the area... and possibly in Northwest Oregon for that matter. All other routes are a significantly longer approach. Now consider that skiers have to share 50% of the Butte with sledders. Yet sledders have access to hun...

Good job,
I always wanted to ski that. It appears to me that one could park at the ski area across the street and skin from the road.
That area I hear gets a lot of snowmachines.
It's no fun when they are ripping around while we are skiing, but I am not opposed to them having access as long as they stay in their designated areas.
We all gotta get along!

It was a good day, skiing was interesting, and staying upright from the wind was another challenge but all in all when we got back to the groomed road everyone took off for the cars like there was a "blue light" special happening ;).
Not sure about that stability. I dug a pit 100 yards inbounds from the Table gate and 50 feet above the cat track. Estimated info: North aspect, 35-40* slope, ~4600', 10:30ish just before the sun came out, cold temps (<32*).
Not much action on the column test. The ice crust above several feet of light snow. With the Rutschblock Test, I got the crust to break down 1-2" unclean and then there was a clean shear slab of 4-5" below that just by stepping on wi...

Looks like a good time. Good call on the bowl, that thing is the prime angle for a slide when the danger is high. Thanks for the link to the winter wild lands site..........
Nice work way to keep it safe!
Not much chance of hitting the steeps on the coast mountains either!
Live to ride anouther day!

Your story is incredibly compelling, and their response is inconceivably wrongheaded. It just doesn't seem to be such a complicated equation to keep customers happy. Every time I think of this tale my head just spins with wonder.
Did they have any kind of reasoning that made any sense?
I'd be knocking - politely and respectfully of course - on JK's door in person I think....once you're mobile anyway!

We put in the tracks you saw Saturday morning heading further up-steam. We went briefly uphill towards Kendall to the first tributary coming down from Kendall, crossed it easily on a snowbridge, then descended right away back down to Commonwealth Creek and crossed it on a good wide log. It looks like that log will be the way to cross for a while. We then backtracked to the usual drainage leading to Cave Ridge, made a few more do-able stream crossings, then ascended Snoqualmie M...
Yet another day of great skiing. The wind helped me stay upright.

Later in the week with sun during the day and freezing at night, one hopes the corn will happen.
We didn't harvest corn until summer Solstice last year, I feel torn about having excitement for spring conditions in January. But I do love the whooping cowboy turns only possible in that loose granular...I suppose the snorkel can come out of my pack and go back...
Nobody to check in with, the place was a ghost town. Alpental and Summit West (aka Snoqualmie Summit) are closed on non holiday Mondays. Only Summit Central (aka Ski Acres) is open on Monday at the pass. Later in the week with sun during the day and freezing at night, one hopes the corn will happen.
Just curious, did you check in with anybody? Was Alpental open, or are they closed on Monday?
Beautiful pictures! Thanks for the shots.
We used sleds from 29 Pines campground to just pass the Ingalls/Longs Pass trailhead. Skinned up from there (although there are sled tracks all the way to the pass, which is the wilderness boundary). If you're sans sled and don't want to slog up the road for 10 miles, you could get there early on a weekend with a case of beer and a tow rope and probably hitch a ride with someone.
