In the second to last photo, is that the "mousetrap" below the skier that the guide book refers to?

hi scotsman,

No the mousetrap is in the Asulkan valley which we went to on Sunday (haven't got the pictures up yet).  It's a terrain trap towards the end of the valley about 4kms up valley from trailhead
Nice work Amar way to take advantage of the spring like conditions.
I had some ligaments reattached after a snowboard fall and this guy was great.  Jim Hsu used to work on major league pitchers, plus his name sounds like he should be a sports doc. http://www.thesportsmedicineclinic.com/tsmc/physicians/Hsu.asp

A few of my favorite pics from the two days...Thanks for the great time Stacy and Alice! 1st pic- Stacy on the Easton. 2nd pic- Alice on the Easton. 3rd pic- View of Fraser Valley/Harrison Lake from Cheam. That's gotta be a couple hundred foot drop  ;)
We did the same trip yesterday (1/18).  Bone-chilling fog at the car, but it warmed steadily as we gained altitude.  Got in a few decent turns on the way back to to the road, but it was most notable for me just to be out after surgery in Nov.

The mystery is who left their skis in the avy debris probably just above the picture in the first post?

Be still my beating heart!!!!
Thanks for a super report and motivation.
Pit information very interesting.
If it doesn't improve here shortly im doing the drive again.
Thanks Lee!
Snowmobilers come in via Canyon Creek on the backside of Church Mtn followed by the entire length of Excelsior Ridge.  I believe the wilderness boundary is near Excelsior Pass waaaay over at the west side of the ridge.

Skied today in the Asulkan/Great Glacier side looking for less sun-affected slopes.  Had a nice tour to Perley Rock.

Ran into a group ahead of us that found shallow snowpack (HS 80cms) on NE facing slopes off a ridge.  They had hard results on a compression test.  We did an ECT test on a WSW facing pit on that same ridge.  Depth there was about 200cms and we had no results.  Contrary t...
I'm confused. I thought the road to the Meadows trailhead was open during the winter because it is a snow park area (for all the snowmobilers). I've been thinking about slowshoeing from there to do some photography. Am I missing something??  ???
Cool trip. Thanks for the info. I love it up there and wondered how it would be to ski. how are the snowmobilers getting up there? Are they just using Twin Lakes Road?
Thanks guys.  We opted to drive to the ER.  Didn't want a helicopter bill on my Visa!  It was about 3 1/2 hours from accident to putting it back in place at the ER.  We were unsure what damage was done so although we suspected it was a dislocation we weren't sure if anything else was awry.  Luckily x-rays showed a simple anterior/inferior dislocation.  They did a conscious reduction on me.  Knocked me out with Brevatol - 5 minutes and I woke up much...

The sporty boot up Pan Face resulted in a fall and dislocated shoulder for me on Saturday.  It went from easily kickable steps to ice near the top (around 10:00am).  We were the second group up the face on Sat.  Special thanks to Mike and his two companions who assisted me at the bottom while my companions had to wait for things to warm up to safely descend.  The field sling got props in the E...
Im sorry to hear that man.
Hopefully you will be fully healed before spring touring season.

My wife, brother and I skied this yesterday as well.  The corn was rediculously good.  Tons of fun on the way down and super easy skinning.  We had a late start as well and hung out for a bit to let the snow get softer which was a good call.  But seriously, enough with this corn, lets ski pow and harvest corn in the spring....

Chris
Just to give you an idea of the battle at Cheam...... I took this picture above Spoon Lake.......

I"m always up for a battle!!!
I've never considered Cheam to be a January trip, but then I don't know any snowmobilers. June is generally the best time to do it self propelled.Do sleds go beyond the summer parking lot? I guess what I am asking, is the whole mountain open game to machines? That does sound like a battle zone.
9 miles and the snow was sick.......please take literally.
How far is the road approach to Schreiber Meadows without a sled?  Congrats on a true winter ascent from the longer approach!!  How was the snow on the Roman Wall?  I was looking at Baker today and wishing I was there.
Nice work John!!  Glad you both got into some sun and enjoyed some corn before the death crust that lay waiting in the shade.  It's great you get to ski with your daughter as much as you do, relish in the present.  Great form on the skiing by the way.  I will get you those photos and trip notes tomorrow.  Cheers!
Sounds like the right move to turn around.  It's never fun to be pelted with ice and wonder if there's a big one coming down with your name on it.    I'm impressed with your positive attitude in the face of nasty sounding snow conditions!

Speaking of "a big one with your name on it", I just found this news report:

Portland Mountain Rescue crews were able to...
I was planning on Roosevelt on Saturday, but prior trip report photos of avy debri at Source Lake and soupy fog that morning looked less than desirable to venture through and such was my deterrent.
Nice work going through with your plans and not letting TR's diminish your ambitions to make it happen, not that such would ever be the case for you guys.  Good call turning around when you did!

Roosevelt is one of my favorites, right up there with Triple Lakes Tour, ie: Chair Pe...
Went up to Hurricane ridge on our way home from the Olympic Peninsula today and was surprised how much snow looked like it had melted.
Did the same route yesterday and thought we'd never get a ride up from the bridge to Paradise.  We tried everything; switching positions on the road from me on the outside shoulder of the road to Scott on the inside, and then the other way around.  We were passed by maybe 30 cars or so over what seemed like an eternity.  Then I put away the rope and axe and Scott hid the bag of lime, and boom, we got a ride from an unsuspecting older couple! ;)  Seriously, how harmful can a couple middle ag...
Last photo. Looks like a fog avalanche in the background. Cool photo.
You can really get some weird atmospherics at the pass eh?
Lets see some triage photo's Andy!  Glad you guys were out and about.
Yes, that be me and my axe; a very comforting way to ride on steep slopes esp. when cliffs and crevasses lurk below.  Van Trump was fabulous butter snow pretty much top to bottom Saturday with no wind and shorts and t-shirt climbing attire 8).
Great report and beautiful pictures, Matt!
Hey Matt-  we saw you guys drop in... nice!!  A friend had told me about a chute skiers left of the main Nisqually Chute, and I guess that's the one.  You guys skied it in style for sure.

We thought about taking the same skiers-right line down the glacier, but things worked out on the left.  Amazing scenery down the valley and glad everyone had a good time.  Tony

... adding... nice touch with JC audio!
Is the rider in the photo riding with and ice ax in his/her hand?
You must log in to see this page.

Nice little vid -- thanks for the conditions update.
Hi Tony, my name is Matt. Two friends and I skied down a different chute the same time you were skiing the Nisqually. Nice to see you are a TAY-er!

Here's a mediocre video of our day

As an aside, can someone let me know if they can't see this video because they aren't on "facebook"?
Someone needs to grab the jetstream by the tail and give it a good shake.
At least you had something!  Mt. Townsend had nada!
Granite was cloud free and benefited from the inversion.
News we have all been waiting for.  You've likely started a lemming attack for tomorrow.  Moguls by the end of the day?  Thanks for sharing the goods.
Happy Birthday!  The "snow" looks nasty - I would have thought with the inversion there would be some corn up high, but Hood is notorious for that stuff.......
Thanks for the pics Allen.  Now we need to get Stella some skis!
That area should never, ever, reopen.
I was up there 2 years ago with buds from Utah and when we reached the summit a local flying solo told us that the bowl "never" slides. He proceeded to drop in, as we watched, and the whole thing went. Good call live to fight another day.
That sounds like some amazing views, nice tr!  Welcome to TAY. :)
Thanks for the update.  I've been looking at the Baker telemetry and assumed a cornfest was in progress.
I was up there on the 14th with Jim & James for a quick tour enjoying the same beautiful sunshine and corn snow.  Skinning in a t-shirt in mid January was a first for me.
Thanks Marcus!

Yes, we need a consult from Amar. I wonder if he will suggest that there is no such thing as 'un-melted' water? I wonder if that's my problem?  :)

Larry
There's the report I've been waiting for -- good stuff Larry.  Nice picture of the crest.  I haven't seen that for a while.

For what it's worth, I do the same thing you do re: water -- pouring off a third and keeping the pot as full of "snowy" water as possible.  We need to get Amar in here for the physics...
