GReat TR.
We were up a few days before you and camped 400' above you under the cliffs at the bottom of the SE.R.MS. That is the route the Avy was on....not on the Diller. THe diller is the steep chute to lookers right that ends in a basin.
Nice pics.

You'll come back; we've got lots of open, spectacular areas up here.
Andy - Thanks for the TR. It's a pleasure to read your material again and thanks for contributing your talent to TAY! You are one of my all-time favorite writers from Powder (sorry, I was not aware of your Wenatchee website).
Thanks for the welcome. Joe, you have a good memory. For many years I was a contributing editor of Powder but with small balls, frail knees, and marginal abilities, I was justifiably put out to pasture. And you're right about the Wenatchee-Something-Or-Other website I currently manage (WenatcheeOutdoors.org).
Niko, it doesn't require that much coverage for a little hell-to-heaven transformation of those slopes. You're right, we didn't continue on to the true summit...

Beautiful report--and very tempting. Here's why: Last October a friend and I climbed the burns to the ridge (exactly the route in your topo) and were driven crazy by the obstacles--especially on the way down, in the dark. I'm astonished there's enough snow to make that slope skiable. I take it that you didn't go all the way to the summit like the guy who went via Rat Cr. Thumbs up, N
A great TR and photos. It brings back memories of a trip a few of us did in that area in April 1999. We started at the Elfin Hut and did the Garibaldi Neve traverse and climbed/skied Mt. Garibaldi along the way. We then setup camp in Sphinx Bay for a few days. Your photo of the Burton Hut was interesting. The snowpack was enormous in 1999 and we only saw the pole with the ball attached to it that marked the location of the hut. I always wondered what the hut looked like. During our trip, w...
Nice effort. That picture of the Sphinx Hut brought back memories of my first extended backcountry winter skiing/climbing trip. Gotta love those huts, although I think I nearly froze in the Sphinx hut. The near-side huts used to be stocked with wood ,not sure about now. First skied/climbed the environs around Garibaldi Lake in 87' as part of a UW climbing club trip. Spent 8 days split between the various huts climbing/skiing Garibaldi, and various lesser summits.&nbs...
Great TR guys, Glad to hear that Sky is getting out in Vancouver!
As Oyvind said, Great contrast shot of the red pants. It highlights the steepness, and the picture was caught at the right time as he was coming around on the turn.
Surprised you guys could make any turns with that much walking/vert. Should have taken mileage donations for that walkathon.

Great TR Andy and a privilege to have your report on TAY.
I have read some of your adventures on the Wenatchee something or other dot something, get out and do it webpage.
And if this is the same person who wrote articles for Powder and other skiing mags, I recognize the name and the writing style.
Welcome and look forward to reading more of your stuff.

Zap,
Thanks for the comment. Regarding my gray-bearded friend, he must be a look-alike of who you're thinking about. Matt is a life-long Forest Service stiff and a guy who usually says 'yes' when you ask him the night before whether he's available to ski. Gotta treasure those partners. Another sterling attribute: He's also almost alway in good form when you photograph him.

Great trip and area, picture of Sky and Ryan are very nice. I like the contrast of strong colors of clothing against the white of the snow. kudos jason
Andy,
Welcome to TAY ! I enjoyed the TR and photos on the link. Is your gray bearded ski partner still working with North Cascade Heli Skiing ?

Lee, you'd better work on those powers if you're planning to do anything that requires two tools with Sky. ;).
I do not have those powers unfortunately. But I do now have two ice tools
Lee,
Roger that; please contact my supervisors and God to coordinate a prolonged period of good weather during which my absence will be excused.
Thanks,
Sky

jason next time convince sky to take more then 2 days. Place needs more then a couple of days. It's not like the markets are going anywhere if you miss one or two days.
well-crafted report, looks like fun. still on my list for days such as yours.
Thanks guys.
And Ryan, really appreciate your convincing me/driving. This was a great escape!

I took my dog out for some nordic splitting yesterday(wed). Went up to the terrain trap fork of the S creeks just past the crossing. Dog would not cross as usuall, so we went just bit further on the east side before turning around. Took a few photos of slide debris. Some was partially covering what I believe are your traversing out tracks.. also noted part of the up track was swept into the creek.

Thanks Wayne for throwing some variety out there. I'm always over joyed by seeing the potential for future trips with each trip I take!
beautiful photo's-every one belongs in the stoke thread! Well played, sir....
Way to get out there Oyvind. Looks like a good time.
Thanks guys! What a wonderful place. I couldn't imagine it on a bluebird day (but I will soon). I'm finding access in Canada, for the most part, much easier than in Washington.
Great TR Jason, I've gotta get up there. Sweet pix, esp. the 1st and last.
I love that area. I hope to return again this month before the lake melts.

Ha! I'm thinking Hopi and I (and Anastasia -- she'll be the main dog-lover) will have a slightly more cooperative relationship than that. We'll use Chugach as a model if it goes south though... :)
SICK! nice tr, im so jealous, i especially dig the last photo..

I recommend Scotsman for dog training since his dog Chugach is the epitome of obedience in the backcountry. :D
Seriously, if you are considering or need contacts for avy dog training I have some leads.
Chugach and I have finally reached an agreement. I drive him to the trail head, he goes touring with other people he considers cooler and we meet up at the...
Oyvind,
Most interesting report there. I tried to hike Cannon from eight mile area last summer and it was blow down hell, from the recent fires I'm told.
How long did it take you? Sounds like you left you car at 5am... when did you return?

Not sure where your last shot is, but it looks similar to slopes between Sperry and Big 4, it isn't a glacier, but was carved by one millions of years ago. I've always thought it looks like fun skiing up there.
This image does looks like the broad granite ridge between Vesper/Sperry and Big 4. There used to be a pocket glacier tucked up under the north face of...

Good timing Mack.
I had my eye on the N face of Steeple the day before you were up there. I had hoped to ski it into Cox Vally and climb the summer trail up to Obstruction Point Road. Fortunately, we were too occupied skiing powder to break away and make the trip South. I was reassured knowing that you would claim some turns there the next day and that between us we would cover the ba...
Great weather, great snow and great partners, what else do you need for a great day? As others have stated, the stability was better than expected. It was fun to ski with a group that made decisions based on safety rather than blue ski powder fever :D!
Jan and I went back up early on Sunday, more for the workout than expecting any good snow. We parked at Maggies, skinned up to the ridge and skied a northwest facing line. Much to our surprise, the upper few hundred feet were just as s...

HE is 16 months, got there on my back...I do have some action video, but not sure how to upload it to TAY.
Looks like a great trip!
I think about that area often, my sister lives down in Reno. Now it looks like I may be able to get a local tour guide. Would someday like to ski from Mt Rose ski area east to the basin floor. Need a guide, Kam, up for any good bush whacking?

Glad you got those turns out there. Riding the chairs at Crystal I kept looking to see if someone was going to hit that up. I kept saying nobody has hit Pick yet. Finally in the afternoon you guys hit it, good job! Short, but sweet! Pretty rare to have Pickhandle on a weekend day without at least a few more folks out there. Especially powder on a sunny day in April!

I'm jealous,...
- you can check the snow totals at CDEC, go to April's #'s.
Northerly aspects have winter snow above 9,500 ft. The winter snow typically sticks around through May. Other slopes are the place to be !
Tioga Rd. opens about the wk. after fishing opener (last wk. of April)
This is only open from 395, to 11 miles west (everybody does the Dana Couloir, but the East aspects are on the opposite side of the road ) !

Beautiful -- that's what I'm talking about. Nice shots :)
I'm jealous, as I'm more or less hanging up the skis for much of the spring -- adopting a puppy who we'll be introducing to touring slowly. Mmm... spring powder.

While exploring the area near the trail head, I did come across a creek that would have been a pain to cross, but nothing that you should have to have logs to cross. It still had a lot of loose snow on it, which is part of the reason I skipped following the trail precisely. Perhaps you are referring to the "standard" route on the east side? Kam and Cass, had trouble on that route a few years ago, and bailed out.
Isn't there's a river crossing not long after the trail head? Were there downed trees to provide a crossing here?
Oi! Resize them thar pics... I'm getting motion sick scrolling through them. Cherry pick the best ones and thumbnail the rest. Looks like great snow -- the pics have such good detail I can read the lettering on your jacket at 100 yards... :)
Sorry Paul! I meant you were on Onyx - compatible bindings. I hear even naheed is product -testing so at least you're not alone in bondage.
We skied up Vantage and passed you guys as you were going in on the road. Coverage actually looks good

I've been trying to tell you guys that I was cool!
Thanks to the locals, Blain, Jan and Gary and co for sharing the goods. It was a beautiful day to be on the ridge. The views of the Straits, the Bailey Range, Olympus and the interior Olympics are amazing and worth the drive alone. Adding in perfect weather, gre...
