nice work, I may have to go head up there after classes one day this week- let me know if you are interested.

Chris
Nice to meet you at panorama pt..I was the Teli skier that joked about Scotts accents. Continued to Muir and had great soft snow in the mid snowfields. My companions were not up for the Nisqually. Got totally whited out in fog on the descent above the lower bowl. Would have been hairy in the valley-zero vis! You lucked out on the timing.

Those wild and crazy guys!  They were supposed to be on Mt. St Helens!
Thanks for the info Scotty.  Glad you had a good day!

They where having a good time in the parking lot! ;) and that was before any skiing got done!
Oh to be young again with the constitution of an ox.
White pass report in lift served section but in a nutshell it was fantastic.
Still, do not qestion your choice . Like it's all good and we're looking at a couple months of better yet.

How was White Pass Robie?
Nearly ended up going there today until I saw Paradise was clear.
Chris ,a good day like that sure makes one forget  Saturday's conditions.
Thanks for the Nisqually update.

Great day

Yep.

If it's the same tree that's been there all winter, it would take an ambitious alpinist about 10 minutes to saw and move it for his/her community service points.
the road is now open but there is a downed tree which means you can't yet get all the way up to the lot.  i'd say the tree is about a mile from the lot so it's and easy hike.
That's one of the great things about the Chair Peak circ - even when the skiing isn't that good, the views and environment are way cool. Nice photos.

There looked to be some good routes on N Steeple.

It doesn't look like I will be making it up your way before the bridge shuts down for repairs.  I suppose I'll just have to drive around and stay a week.  Maybe I can chase Jan up to High Divide.  ;)

Thanks in advance for the conditions update.

Good trip guys and gal.
It looks like there are several good skiing options from Waterhole.  Glad to hear that you are getting at it.  Do you suppose that the South aspects along Obstruction and Elk will hold snow for long?

Thanks for the pics.  If you want to post some on your TR you'll need to upload them to somewhere other than picasa (I use flickr for no reason).
Right on Dan. Your pics are getting better! Thanks for the boot pack on CJ (and beta)! Way to tame the whitehorse. Yay baby. That mountain is a ride.
Well, as of Monday, 4/20 the road is still gated.  Be prepared to hike the road for about two miles, then begin the game of skis on/skis off for patches of snow all the way to the T.H.  Only the last 1/4 mile is consistent snow.  And from the road to the lake took about 4 hours.  It's very quick and easy going once you get to the trailhead.  The path is beaten down, and you could hike it sans sloshoes if you wanted.

And just another note:  The MSR Reactor stove kicks serious butt...

Glacier is in great shape, and in fact, coverage is better on the trail than it was in January and Feb.  Aasgard looked skied out.  Lake still solidly frozen over, making access to the glacier slick and quick.

I'm guessing you  started from eightmile creek rd? How far were you able to drive up the road and how much time did it take to reach colchuck lake...
Aasgard has plenty of snow right now, and is looking much more covered than when I was up there mid January.

Before 1/16/09

After, 4/19/09

Any idea of current conditions at Cannon

Thanks for the info. Any idea of current conditions at Cannon, the couloir and esp Rat Cr approach? Thanks, N
Nice pictures, Chris!  Beats working, eh?
Thanks for the pics and update on road/ski conditions.  Looks like some sweet corn up there!

Due to an injury it will be a 1-2 more weeks to b/c ski but that means the roads will be more snow free for easier access!  ;)
It has been almost 20 years since I last used the Waterhole Hut. At that time, you had to enter a lottery to get a chance to book it. Anyone know when it lost it's woodstove? It was a nice warm place to bring youngsters for a weekend of back country skiing. With the equipment of the day we couldn't take advantage of the terrain shown in the pictures like we can now. :'(
I thought you might use the data as ammunition in fighting against the park's efforts to keep the road closed on days when in shouldn't be closed. In which case older data might be useful, too.

As for the daily data, as usual there is a fly in the ointment: even though the time says 7:30 or 8am, it is often not actually available online until a few hours later. Which might make it too late to be useful for day-of-trip decisions.

Thanks for the shuttle offer (and t...
Amar, thanks for the additional links!  I'm not much interested in the older data.  However, the first link's temperature & snowfall readings appear to be posted early enough each morning to help decide if starting from Longmire might be enjoyable on days when the phone message says Paradise will not open.  I owe you bigtime, so send a PM if a shuttle would expedite your future adventures, such as leaving your vehicle at the planned finish...also, apologies to CE for the thread dri...

I think Longmire has a weather station; is this data/telemetry available online?  This info would be very handy for me, since my records show that the Longmire gate did not open on at least 25 days between mid December & mid-April.

Gary, I'm not sure if there is an automated weather station at Longmire, if there is I'd like to find that data too. But...

Amar - thanks for the weather info.  I'd also be very interested in a primer on how to use the UW atmospheric sciences forecast.  I've tried to use it a few times and had limited success.
Nice work, one of my favorite days on skis was last year on hood. I'm a bit confused about the mini-'shrund that you mention...is this the one that normally opens near the top of the normal climber's route, or is there another one that you saw on your way down, skiers right of crater rock? Similarly, where is the overhang? I'm hoping to get to Hood in the next couple of weeks.

Watch out for what the little birdie tells you.

silas, that's some cool stuff. love to see those flags wavin'      nice reports
Maybe you didn't notice, but I put etcetera after conditioning to be all inclusive (i.e. weather included).
Conditioning, I can guarantee, you would not have been a factor in Matt's summit attempt.  Sounded like the right call to go down, shame you didn't have Monday as the day to summit though.
I think Rainier does a fine job of weeding out those folks that "shouldn't" ski from the summit without the aid of trip reports, weather conditions, etc.  Also, haven't heard of any fatalies on skis/boards from anywhere above 10k since '99 from what I can remember.  Those skiers/boarders who get shut down due to conditioning, etc. typically figure out that it's best to descend.
I think he is pickin his nose.  Or he might be smelling his finger after pulling it out of his..  Uh..  Nevermind, we aren't supposed to talk like that on TAY right...  ;)

Jim - I don't actually know the price.  Something like $40?  They raised the price because a lot of people were abusing the honour system and skiing inbounds on it.

You can buy the tickets at customer service at Blackcomb or Whistler Base.  You have to show you have avalanche gear (nothing about how to use it though or training) and then sign a waiver.  I understand it takes some...
I was going to toss my 2 cents worth into the pot just before Amar put up the homestead, so I guess I'm glad i didn't as I would have ended up in the soup line.  I was, however, going to say that I believe the NWS does a very good job, particularily given the very complex terrain of the PNW.  Forecasting is a probabilistic endeavor.  It's not surprising that people may feel the forecast was 'wrong' when the 30% chance of rain (a relative low chance - yet n...

Picture isn't very clear...
Is that some kind of hand signal?
Or maybe some obscure Hyak gang sign?
Thanks Lee. Great info. We'll build some extra time into our schedule to deal with the ticket.

Thanks again for the TR, here and on TGR (full audio, extended re-mix version...crank it up).  Awesome as usual.

Their rules state no snowmobiles.
Their permit expires on April 15th, at which point they suspend operations.

Thanks Amar.  I'm planning a return trip to the Cambria icefields next year weather -depending of course
yea that was some nasty weather up there last weekend, good job getting to 12k!

we skiied a shot down to the carbon over the weekend, and i skiied gib chute from the summit yesterday - windy up high, but nothing like what you guys experienced

edit - i put more pictures and description at TGR to not violate forum rules
Still wondering where you saw the forecast of 10mph winds . . . although now I suspect that it might have been the point forecast linked from TAY.

I really have developed a personal dislike of those point forecasts, based on seeing outrageous and dead-wrong predictions numerous times. And because they give such a false sense of precision and accuracy, yet have no disclaimer letting users know that in fact they offer no such thing. Perhaps it's some internal NWS/NOAA politics whic...
thanks amar - great info!
Thanks Amar for all the useful explanations.

I've delved into the prediction models before and have come across consistent comments and reports describing the accuracy that you summed up:
0-3 days Good Predictor,
4-7 days Decent,
7+ days Worthless.

An aside, it's really fun to look at the long-term 3 to 6-month out watershed predictions and see that they have 0 correlation in terms of predicting an average, above average or below average ye...
