Crunch time Andy, Bigger skis ,better technique or more din ? ;) We better be quiet about this after all our recent posts . Actually I'm quite jealous and wish my skis were coming off. I'm nursing a sore back. looking forward to doing a light weight spring tour with you.
Just happened across this post. The tour with Darin was spectacular and one which I hope to repeat with him. Also, I have dropped the West Face of Barometer Mtn. (can be seen from White Rock, BC.) amongst the old burn (3000' of open slopes/avy paths) to Wells Creek Rd. and a 4-5 mile glide back to Nooksack Falls and HWY 542. It was pretty cool crossing the Nooksack at 1800' elevation on skis. The picture is of MattC skiing Barometer with Wells Cr. below.
Nice tree skiing. where were you? PM me (?) or just give me a general area to search.
Unless it's top secret.... :P
I registered just to to find out. Beautiful pictures!

Nice work! It's good to get them started young. ;) Hopefully Emma will share your passion when she grows up.
LeeL, love your trip reports of the Stewart area. It is a place I've been looking at to explore both in the summer and winter. I hear there are a lot of mountain goats in the area that you can see in the winter. Did you guys happen to see any mountain goats while you were there?
Steve....... I was working. Remember, I'm an athlete!
David, Yes.
great shots and looks like nice terrain! I've always wanted to go to terrace and smithers. Way to get after it!
wow Ron, picture 2 looks great. Looks pretty smooth, booby traps covered? I wish I could have been there. Nice to have work though for the time being.
I think MH stands for a diabolical laugh because he got the goods while some of us had to work. Or Mt. Hood.

Hope you start feeling better soon and are able to get some turns in before you leave.
Geez.. those are some nice tree shots. MH = Mount Hood, yes?
Sorry you've gone ill! How much longer are you travelling?
Your friend has some odd personal records, but excellent taste in ski terrain :)

Ha! If breakable crust and knee deep shmoo do the trick for you, Stugie, MAN do I have some stashes to show you. :)
But yes, can't say enough about the lodge and it's in a really beautiful spot. The terrain isn't huge, like you'd get in Golden or Revelstoke, but the tree skiing is plentiful and there are lots of aspects to play on for powder hunting. It'd be an excellent spring destination too, as the ridgelines and steep shots would be very conducive to so...

Has anyone got an update on this route since we got all this new snow (march 25th)? What about the bottom levels as you descend to 542? Sufficient snow coverage to ski?

Thanks!
I've updated my TR and everyone in the first picture is accounted for.

Wow! One of you is getting a good cardio workout. ;D Go Emma!
In 1999, Valenties Day I finally convinced my old man to come to Mount Baker for the weekend. The conditions were stellar. My brother, Old man, and Ben Manfredi went out to the BC every single fun for 2 days straight. In fact, I broke the low trail out there through about a foot or so of new snow the previous day.
When the avi calved off, we had all just skied out to the bottom just escaping with mere seconds. I went back up and we all joined the probe line. Along with another guy on...

Re: Valentines Day slide 1999
This event was the catalyst that changed the OB rules at Mt. Baker and might have been the luckiest day of my life. The gate access via chair 8 was getting bombarded all morning...with nearly a foot of snow and blue bird skies, it was a dream day for riders. I was a bit more naive with snow safety back then, but anywho, my friend and I cycled the OB off of chair 8 all morning and then all of a sudden my friend was having some struggles riding....

How about an future commemoration of an anniversary of the 10th Mountain Division's (actually the precursor 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment) training stint at Paradise back in 1942?
"Oh give me skis and some poles and klister
And let me ski way up on Alta Vista.
You can take your showshoes and burn them, sister
And everywhere I go you'...
Kudos to all the celebrants, especially Lowell, for a memorable outing! I loved the costumes & old gear and thought it great that participants ages spanned the range from teenage Tom to Dorothea's 78. A good omen for the continuing Paradise ski tradition.
Hopefully, this doesn't violate the commercial postings rule, but check out http://www.vintageskiworld.com before you get rid of that really old gear. I was stunned by the prices, such as $150 for bamboo poles...

...long live Zoom!
It still lives - curiosity piqued by one of Lowell's presentations, I decided to see if one could still buy it. It tastes ok, if bland, and expands significantly more than oatmeal in one's stomach. Oh for the days when cereal manufacturers would sponsor amateur backcountry skiers...
Thanks again Lowell for the great pieces of history and putting everything together!
Thanks to everyone who was there...what a great time! That video was awesome...long live Zoom!
I'll throw up some pics when I get a chance and a link to another article covering the event.

Matt - thanks for the video. That was a good time. We will get it next time.

Hey Matt,
Great touring with you on Sunday. Hope we can get out there again. I really enjoyed your pics and video.
We may try to go out again tomorrow or Friday if conditions look good. Let me know if you're interested.

Marcus, I don't know how you did it, but you painted me green via a tr. Nice trip! I'm jealous - and that's just from the lodge info! Glad you guys got some whooping snow! ;)
Hey Lisa,
Thanks for the TR. As Fredd said, Kristy and I joined him on a tour up there on Sunday. We also chose to boot up the last few hundred feet. I certainly didn't look very sharp on the way down, taking many a spill in the heavy glop. I hope you represented us freeheelers a little better than I.
Cheers,
Joe

Thanks for the report and leading the way. I toured up there with friends Joe & Kristy on Sunday. We encountered some heavy snowfall and whiteout conditions on the way up, but that at least gave us slightly more dust-on-crust to work with before hitting the avy debris and glop further down. The luge run down the Commonwealth drainage was quick and surprisingly fun.
For those interested, our pit at the lower part of the slope showed said dust on top of a crust that sat bonded atop...

It is a wonderful place! I can see it from my house!
The place is hallowed ground: my friend died in a slide off the southern face of Keokee several years ago....I was up there skiing last weekend with thoughts of him. You might find a little memorial that I left the day I went up and retrieved his gear from the rescue site. RIP, Tim: a mountaineer is always free!
Enjoy your visits, folks!

Lowell your memory is not that bad, it is Alison Kilroy at 1, far left (third from left in the re-enactment shot). It was great fun, thanks for giving me a reason to dig out the old stuff! Beautiful day.
I'm posting a couple of casual photos (of Lowell and I think its Jorie and Gary). If anyone wants a higher quality version (around 1mg), pm me.
I'd be happy to ski with any of you any time!

Love the video. That is great work -- gives a nice picture of overall conditions. Warm weather and rain following epic snow = really hard skiing conditions! I opted for a little cross country tour on nordic skis around Catherine on Sunday given the forecast for hard snowpack and lack of willing partners. I was amazed how hard the snow was from just a couple warm days.
What fun !
Lowell we don't care about your short term memory just keep giving us more of the long term !
Thanks

My first post for a very nice "ski de randonnee-alpinisme" tour. Missing the skyline and a summit shot. Here they are. Great company!
Okay, here's where I get to make a fool of myself. I'd like to get the names straight in the group photo at the start of the thread. Here's what I know:
Back row, from left:
1 - Allison ?
2 - Arg... I've forgotten ???
3 - Steph Subak
4 - Scott Stugelmeyer
5 - Jorie Wackerman
6 - Oh... my memory is terrible ???
7 - Gary Vogt
8 - Dorothea ?
9 - Holly ?
10 - D'oh ???
11 - Doug McDonnal
12 - Lowe...

Thanks so much for hosting this Lowell. I enjoyed the history lessons, meeting new friends and old... the video was great fun (Zoom!) and the mild nature of the ski itself made for a perfect "recovery tour", not to mention a whole lot of fun to ski in a skirt. Jorie, I'll join you for the spring fashion show... :D
That was a blast! The re-enactment photo is worth a million bucks.
Here are some more photos from the trip. Lisa also wanted me to add that the trip was a FULL body workout and I completely agree. I actually snapped a BD expedition pole in half on "one leg run" due to an accident involving me+pole+ski+very aggressive snow snake >:(

Lowell,
I had planned to make it out; even bought a new hat! A cold and cough kept me home. Tom filled me in a few things today. Glad y'all had fun.

There was another huge slide that came out of the Herman Saddle area. We were checking out the carnage for sight seeing purposes and ran into a guy who said he'd been skiing the area for 25 years and had never seen anything like it.
Those makeshift bungie bindings are awesome! I wonder if Mr. Rainey saw (or made) something similar to inspire the first generation of super loop bindings (basically a cable through the toeplate that connected to a big rubber tube that stretched around the heel). I loved the original super loop back when I was using lace-up leather boots.
As always, fun to read your history tidbits as well, Lowell.

Thanks for the TR. Over the weekend, I saw a portion of a TV program on Skiing in the Northwest and there was a segment on Caribou Mtn. Lodge. Looks like a beautiful backcountry lodge.
Lowell, thanks so much for organizing this grand outing. Fun to get into the spirit of rememberance, and to wear a skirt skiing for the entire day! Might be my new spring skiing attire. I enjoyed the company, and seeing so many other folks' ancient gear and historic attire. Very impressive skiing by those of you on the old gear. Hopefully will post a few other good photos soon....

Great stuff, thanks for the report Lowell. Wish I had made it.
Thanks. We skied down the CMC all the way to its end practically, then traversed south a bit to access the W. slopes, then down and across mountaineer's creek.
