After remaining closed Tuesday for "facility problems",
I dunno about stats ,I wouldn't want to get traded to another mountain!
Thanks Loren, I like your comment. I'd heard about your Gib Chute experience from H at some point.
But right now, it sparked my memory that I, too, had tried a kick turn in the same spot. Facing left on that ledge, I tried an outward kick turn, but gave up after kicking my right ski around and realizing that I was likely to slip if I went any further with it or tried to bring the left ski around. So I gingerly put the right ski back and did a little hop turn, the one that ended...

we were up a couple of weeks ago and skinned the track on the north side and then traversed the west side which was pretty thin. we went over to the east (about half way around) and then came back, but didn't ski down the east side much. I am surprised you were still able to ski it, it was really thin when we were there.
Love the flag representation. Ballard would be proud. ;)
Wow, those are some incredible shots!
Good job Amar and Kyle. The top of that thing is really effing steep (50+ is convervative) and scary. Falling above the constriction would be a bad thing for sure. It was soft when I skied it, but that meant I had no chance to arrest if I fell. I made a kick turn on that ledge and almost fell over head first when I did it. Sure felt good to finally side slip through the constriction and have open slope below. Scary shit. Good work!
we did alpental after work. Should've been there earlier since the refrozen snow made for a nasty crust on the way down. Left the upper gunmount at rollen at about 7:50 for some *twilight* turns.
It's always more fun trying to huck stuff when there's an unpredictable crust and it's too dark to see the landing well. ;)
Good times.

Thanks for the report. Tuesday was the day and the lifts were running at Crystal and it was good. Not great as it could have been smoother, but still dry and knee + deep. Was thinking about heading up Wed to ski the ABC but had to work (darn that making money stuff). Deciding to go ride some lifts at the Alp this am, gonna go based on the "top 700' was nice". I'm sick, someone help me ;D

Ha :D that's great Gary, you obviously love to tour.
I was just thinking more about it and average miles vrs average vertical skied is a fairly interesting statistic.
I tend to try to minimize the miles and maximize the vertical and others the opposite.
I think I'm going to start keeping track of it like you and see where the numbers come out.

Were the Swedish girls as cute as we all want them to be????
Sorry, no photos, just use your imagination, it is all true.
It could be rather fun to see some regional, as well as wayward, stats like that. And then, from that, how could you not assemble an All Star team? But what would the catagories be? Certainly, 'most days' is in. And, of course, 'most vertical'. I should think also, 'most vertical per mile traveled'. Baseball has a lot of catagories for stats, but I'm guessing we wouldn't want to count the 'number of bluebird days y...

Cool report from the other side of the pond!

Hmm, breakable crust hours of flying and driving from home, or creamed corn half an hour out the back door? It is not only about the skiing, instead the companionship of misery. What's better than skiing with friends in breakable crust? Skiing with friends who have their own stone grinder and ski factory, Patagonia Outlet, and dream weather! Thanks.
Ok, here I go sneaking in a few more shots. Vote me off the island, or at least vote three of the six photos off the website. Thanks. Is Scotsman the photo moderator now? I have been away for a while.

We can be like baseball players have have our own" batting" statistics for the season.

...as your self-appointed personal statistician, I would like to see the VF average increased in the coming months. ;)
Thanks for the precision, Scotty; I'm working on it... ::) I'm sure you know getting old ain't for sissies, but sometimes I wish I'd retired near a ski area where I could skin up to my heart's content & ride the li...
To really apppreciate what Gary does one needs to hang with him on one of those Steven's ridge days. The day Jeff and I went we were drooling over the steepies and Gary was trying to pull us farther down the ridge towards Box canyon. He's now trying to talk me into a circumavgation of Cowlitz rocks.
That's an average of 5.345 miles and 1,465.517 VF per day.
Good work Gary but as your self-appointed personal statistician, I would like to see the VF average increased in the coming months. ;)

The original post is a great example of the right way to evaluate instability.
The snow conditions off Eagle were pretty rough: steep and we could have slid a long way if we biffed. Then we actually had to bootpack and scramble out of the NE basin since it was way too steep to skin.
Nice work Justin, glad you got a good ski in. I know plenty of folks who've dug their pits down there, as (like Greg says) the upper section doesn't really represent the rest of the pitch. We're not talking a rutschblock pit here -- easy to cover up and/or ski through. Nice job mitigating the risk and thanks for the conditions report.
thanks for the fun haggis. threw together a quick video and added a couple of the good shots to the blog - http://coachingendurance.com/blog/2009/04/kendall-peak-west-flank-april-14-2009.shtml
I, too, want to thank you for the great uptrack. We talked briefly in the trees on your descent. I followed your track up to ~5500', then the sun made an appearance so I decided to grab some turns while it was still cold. Ymmmm! Climbed back up, at the top of the main body of timber the sun made a strong appearance so I decided to run back down through the trees before the bombs began to fall, was out shortly after noon.
The rock-lined cleft this descent brings you through is incredibly beautiful. I probably would have missed the lichens and icicles coating the rock walls here had I not stopped to photograph Tom...one of those cases of too much action, not enough awareness.

No, all we saw was this.
BTW, the first 100 feet of the Slot before the rollover are quite low angle, not at all representative of the remainder of the run.
...funny how the dogs start spastic and end up in the tracks (mine does too), nice perspective on Hank
Slot sounds fun! Just to offer another aspect (north) for snow conditions… I took a quick skin up to the top of Apental chair 2 after work today (5:30ish), good skin track in place along ridge left of chair 2. Some tracks about, looks like a few got up there today.
Alpental is reporting 9” at base in 2 days but much much more up top and maybe couple ft deep with wind deposited. Did not see much evidence of recent avy activity up there, some good wind deposit and cornices though.

I agree with jdclimber and their groups decision to dig a pit. Many of the areas that I and others ski have ascents that differ from the descents. And while we all make observations throughout the climb; some of the most necessary evaluations made are at the most inopportune moments of skiing or riding (due to the particular aspect/slope/steepness/terrain). Not to mention to each his(her) own.
BTW - I'd like to get out Thursday afternoon if anyone else is up for it (Snoqualmie ar...

With such talented poetry, who needs pictures? ;) We enjoyed meeting you and Kevin on the road. It was hard for us not to drop in off of Eagle Pt earlier that day, but time constraints did not give us that option. We will be back another day to sample the goods. Glad your trip out on Sunday went OK, the weather up their looked tough.

Thanks for the report and the conditions info.
If anyone can get out tomorrow (Wed), there are some other fun, steep n. facing chutes in the area that I'd like to ride, but my partner had to bail. ;D

The pit was dug to assess stability, which of course is an ongoing process. Ski cuts were also used, plus probing of the snowpack, as was evaluation of the NWAC forecast and evaluation of the telemetry include precip and wind direction. The location of the pit was in an area that is both the steepest part of the slope (so it would likely represent a worst case in terms of stability) and is in an “island of safety”, so is relatively safe for hanging out which was why it was chosen. Th...

Almost all filled in for skiers #5 and #6! Good to see you, and thanks for the sweet uptrack!
Beautiful pics and words.
The blue ice and then the multi-colored granite in your pictures show what a special place this is.
Very cool, kudos, nothing mediocre about your TR. ;D

That's some purdy granite in your third photo. Glad you found the goods on your descent to Lake Stuart; I've only descended interminable talus to the lake. I love the north side of Stuart.
I'm glad someone got some great skiing in today! Hopefully the next few days hold up?
OK so I a bit confused as to why you dug a pit in the slot 100 ft down. If you thought it might go why would you go down. A snow pit is only one tool for assessing stability. With the dogleg and islands of safety that can act as an eddie in the case of an avalanche there are a couple of outs. The Slot isn't really a place, in my opinion, where you want to be hanging out in. The Slot is narrow enough and digging a pit for another skier to fall into isn...
I did the afternoon patrol with my dog Hank and managed to leave the car at the ripe hour of 2pm. Unfortunately, I had to be in the office all morning. In the forest down low it was pretty much raining with all the snow melting off the trees. But it stayed colder as I got higher up so I didn't end up totally soaked. The sun even came out once I hit the open bowls which made for a nice decent. Nice snow in the open, a bit heavy but still carvable. There was lo...

there is nothing like picking up someones skis that way 1/10 the weight of your splitboard :-[
Took a tour of the Prior factory in Whistler last week. They have a light weight split board in the works. Just have to fine tune it so it doesn't keep snapping in half.
Your PWC mate, Jon,myself and our sons spent the Easter'91 weekend in that A frame. I have some warm memories of our stay there. No digital photos to share as I was shooting slides in those days.
Nice work, good to see you all are out there getting some.

Snowboarders are ok. It's when they get split boards and venture o.b. that causes problems!
Let's get you on skis.

Id be willing to try out some skis that is if your paying ;D.
