Looks like a great tour in new environs- way to go all of you!!
Sorry I couldn't be in two places simultaneously (garibaldi park and hwy 20)...
So, thats where the sun is. Nice work trip. Is there a company helicopter on the schedule?
Wow, it sounds like you really motored. I would have thought it better to wait a little later in the season, but I guess the clouds kept the snow from getting too soft. Congrats on a great trip!
Another great adventure. I'm glad that you have Joe with you to share the wonderful trip. I'm pleased that you also included your decision about reaching your "comfort level" for that day on that part of the mountain. Life is precious and you want to be around to share many more great adventures.
Chris and Joe- nice work getting some out there, we are all jealous and looking forward to more pics and tr's.
Sweet, Scott! I think you need me as secretary on your next "work" trip though, right? Cause typing up TRs and (other official documents) is a lotta of work best left to professional typists like myself. ;)
Missed you at CrystalFest, but I certainly wouldn't miss your outing for the world. Can't wait to see/read more.

Nice pix of the turns with the ocean in the background.
What about that four-letter word you said you'd engage in while you are in AK---I think it's called
"WORK"? ???

Hi Snow Crystal,
Bram and myself were the party ahead of you on Silver Star. We heard the rumors of meltout at the base but were not deterred. We booted up for the first 500' or so (45 minutes) on the east side of the river before putting the skins on. The booting was a mix of bush-whacking on hard ground and post-holing in the snow. Within the next couple hundred feet we crossed over the creek and had some difficulty skinning as the snow was rath...

It's a great tour. Welcome to the site!
It was another good day in the Olympics with friends. We were kind of hoping you would have had breakfast waiting for us when we got to the summit though ;). Fortunately, we did remember the camera, so here is a link to a few pictures.

Nice work. Lucky b_st_rd.

ScottK and I made an ill-fated attempt on SilverStar last year and made the mistake of coming up the west side of the creek at a time of low snow coverage. Your report brought back vivid memories of our not very pleasant travels in there... what a mess of blow down.
Anyone ever ski the ridge line in the 3rd photo?
Amazing lines up there.

Nice man. Hope to get out there next weekend or the weekend after for a little May corn harvest.
Cool... that spot looks familiar! skiing the cascade crest is a dream -- one of the best area vantage points I have found yet...

We're off again this morning but I feel really beat up.
Weather clear and warm. Need to watch for wet slides.
I'll cry you a river so big that the Greeners' will be designating it a salmon spawning tributary. :D
Good to know your limit-Have a great time-Fresh Alaskan BBQ salmon, AK skiing steeps.... did I mention that I'm jealo...
We had a very long day yesterday and skied some great stuff. Leo is a mountain goat!
Joe and Leo skied what I consider a" Big Line" that was truly spectacular. I bailed half way up. We got back and Leo insisted we BBQ slamon at his house.
Too tired last night to post pictures but Joe's started a TR and wll post pics later.

Right on! Way to go and put in the effort. I'm super excited you got out to do this.
I had the same idea Friday, my first tour up Red Mt. Nice warm sunny day. Unfortunately got a late trailhead start 1pm. Reached the base (5000’) of the steeper climb to summit by ~4pm, remain climbing on skins, setting a track up the SW face reaching about 5400’ before it got too soft and steep to kick turns safely (at least for me). Started booting up lookers right in direction of rock/ridge but this was not any easier, postholing knee deep in some places. Snow was softening up way too muc...
During my years herring fishing in PWS before the oil spill I often looked at some of those mountains and wondered about sking them. I did ski the "ski Hill" which is a lift at the top of a residential neighborhood in town. That was in the eighties with rear entry boots and really skinny, long skis. I hope all goes well.

you haven't even posted a TR about skiing yet and I want to be there now and always...shred it up for all of us!!!
I know! this is like a trailer for "The Movie", previews of coming attractions. Have a great time you guys!

great picture!
Agreed! :).
Thanks for the great TR and photos!! I love the panos for sure. ...And about a good lease system on the dynafits, very critical to have! In the photo of you with your skis on your back, it looks like you are using a modified dyna-bondage setup. I tried something like that at one point too, and it didn't work out for me either. :( I will PM the location of a photo of my current leash system to give you some ideas/inspiration.
Have fun, enjoy the loooooong days, and say "Hi" to Kevin for me. Ask him if he'll take you to see Buddy Love at the pro shop.

Have a great time, keep us updated. I love the spirit of skiing story that is unfolding, fisherman, locals on first name basis...Oh and pictures would really put this in perspective.

All this in just seven months? It sounds like the work of a lifetime....or at least a strong decade or two. Suddenly I feel like a terrible slacker.
Welcome back!
:) It's surprising what one can accomplish when all the energies put into recreation are channeled into more "productive" pursuits... Haha, but it's time to red...

I have been dying to write this TR for seven months now since my skis and I were abruptly parted in a disastrous bouldering comp accident.
And we've been dying to hear it. Congratulations on the comeback, AND turning lemons into lemonade for the last few months. I vote Holly Inspiration Award for the 08-09 season.
Welcome back! Way to keep at the rehab and get back up on that horse.

Thanks for the report and photos, Keith! It was great talking with you. I enjoyed my outing and it was a beautiful day, even if the snow was less than perfect. The wind was blowing a gale on the ridges--enough to knock you off balance at times.
For those planning to ski Crystal this weekend, here's my take on the conditions. The underlying snowpack seems to be consolidating well. Two or three inches of snow fell this week, which made conditions challenging on north aspects becaus...

Those switchbacks are there for a reason eh -- lots of impact off trail, especially at Granite.
Yeah, we did feel a little guilty, but we tiptoed up in our approach shoes. Coming down in the dark in our ski boots was another story, though, that's when we were stomping straight down the side of the mountain about a mile west of the trail junction. At...
Congratulations on your recovery and what sounds like a great perspective on the whole adventure.

Hi there!
We had mostly sun with some cloud cover, some good skiing and some survival skiing.(variable conditions) moderate winds.
Cruxes climb traverse of the Sharkfin col rap into boston glacier.
Finding the notch which leads to the 3400ft descent into moraine lake.
In the heat of the day we were on inspiration glacier(our timing was off because of potential avy conditions)
Finding the climbers trail to finish the route was interesting!

Nice job getting some corn y'all -- nice that the season seems to be upon us.
We bushwhacked the lower section of Granite, and decided this saved us up to an hour of climb time by not following the wheelchair accessible switchbacks to the snowline.
What was the snow cover like down low? Those switchbacks are there for a reason eh -- lots of impact off trail, especially at Granite.
How was the season at Alpy, Brad?

Nice report. Good to see some pictures of the Olympics. Looks like skiable snow to about 4,000 ft. which should make for some great May turns while the bridge closure keeps the crowds at bay.

It was a beautiful day spent with you, Ryan! The range of emotions I felt that day (awe, fear, sleep deprivation, exhiliration, and complete exhaustion) and companionship made the trip that much more significant.

Good running into your guys yesterday. Inspired by a TR from Monika and Dave_Perkins from last season, Kyle and I decided to tour From Alpental to Kaleetan and Granite. Will post more later and Kyle will as well. Agreed the top 1500-1800 of Granite was just amazing, some of the best corn I've ridden. Which was a great surprise actually. The lower sections were definitely quite gloppy. We got a little over zealous in riding down and went a little too far and had to bushwhack our way threw th...
Like Chris yesterday, Don and I finally gave into the desires of skiing sunny corn snow and left town at 3:45 today. We bushwhacked the lower section of Granite, and decided this saved us up to an hour of climb time by not following the wheelchair accessible switchbacks to the snowline. We booted up the main chute and were very grateful to hit booted steps within 500 feet to the summit. As we edged up the western ridgeline we saw Kyle Miller and his buddy John rip down the central slope from the...
