... We're lucky to live in such a wonderful part of the world.

And we are equally fortunate in having Lowell to pioneer and document.
Nice TR, Lowell. Love the old-time perspective -- though people of our age are much too young to be 'old timers.' And, as always, the Skoog photos rock.
Fine pix.  Where are the people?!
Was the road open to Climbers Bivy?  I thought there was a TR from someone using that route a few weeks ago.
Great report.

...Last time I was up there I also ran into Oyvind's group.

Love those classic, old pics.
We were the brew crew.

A few pics (none from the descent, when a squall came in and the light went flat):
So awesome!  Looks incredible!  And what a fun to read TR!!
I skied the BD tour yesterday (5/9) and up the SR 20 side of Cutthroat today (5/10). Left the road at 8:30. Blue bird sky and blasting sunshine on the entire south exposure. Applied sunscreen and reapplied and I am still crispy.  Bulletproof descent from the road acroos the creek which is still covered and  solidly frozen in spots. The first 600 feet were soft and sometimes gloppy working through steep rock bands. Above, the surface remained firm and climbed well with ski crampons. I ascended abo...

Nice trip!  Sorry I missed it.  How was the trip up/down to Colchuck lake?

Hi Scott-  the skin up Aasgard was on frozen snow for the most part, so scary comes to mind!  From there up Snow Creek glacier was steep but easier to the col at 8400 feet.  The ski down Colchuck Glacier was really nice till about half way, then the sun and warm temps had done their handy wor...
Also works nicely counterclockwise but be ready for an icy climb up to the col.
Nice trip!  Sorry I missed it.  How was the trip up/down to Colchuck lake?
Yours truly was part of the second Earl crew, after a visit to Judy, followed by the big crew (did not see the Maxwells among them).  Certainly high water content stuff.  We figured any west Cascades slopes would have too much mush.
Nice being able to drive well up Beverly Road although it required some Legacy extraction at 3000'.
I guess if the creek is so easy to cross then you have to walk in more afterwards.
Were you part of the brew crew Jim? I stumbled past the party in...

Wow. I look at that west facing col every day as it's one of my monitor screen backgrounds. Way to go.

Gettin' jiggy with it

And another.
It felt this good:
Sounds like a fun mix of skiing and rock.
Looked like there was quite a crew over there on Mary & Judy (another crew we met on the way out did what they call Judy - the lower prominence to Earl-based-looker's left of Mary with the nice larch rib and two bowls below it, and then they did Earl up/down via the summer trail).

Earl's west face to half-pipe chute was fun, but definitely a bit funky on the upper 2/3 with maybe 4-12" of relatively recent snow. It was spank-it-or-be-spanked sort of snow. Though ther...
Yet another Trip with good Friends, Terrain, and Weather!
My pictures are no match for the skilz that Jim Dockery has acquired.
But here ya go...
Nice job and looked like a beautiful day!  Any idea when the road might be oopen to the TH, and what ranger station would I find info. from?

Cheers, Mack
Sweet - wish I was there. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Silaswild,

nice to see a report from the Alps! Enjoy your time over there and ski some steep chutes for me.

Alex
Good to see you got out, George. And braved the first TR post. :) Look forward to more....

(PS-I can't see the photos on my mac.)
Glad you guys finally got some snow.  I've heard that place can be pretty schweet if it ever gets coverage.  ntwatt!

Welcome rai_ferrule.
Yeah something of that source  ;).
Great Pictures, Holly.  Always nice to see tee shirts on skis.  Glad you're getting out and doing so well!
Thanks Holly ! Glad to see your back !  Downhill kick turns should be in every good skier s bag o tricks. Why waste a injury on crappy snow ?
Corn 8's.
Very nice Zap and Jill.
Who is the goon in the red jacket??? Silas sounds like things in Europe are continuing to go well. Did you make it to La Grave? It was fantastic there?
Nice Zap... that looks great.  We've been lacking in sunshine this week.

I can only say Giant Thumb up! (I assume that's the Giant's Dentalwork.) N
Just curious, did you try some direct bushwhack route out from Colchuck Lake?  Wondering what caused the epic bushwhack fest.
I'm on the tail end of a 3 week stay in Chamonix right now, amazing place.
The Olys can be burly.  Something kept slamming the weather windows in your face, eh.
Last year Snowbell and I looked down the (NNW) side of Surprise Gap.  What do estimate the angle and vert. of that face is?

Telemack - I'd say around 45 with short pitches +/- 5.  Looking up at it, we figured we were going to have to boot, but there was so much freshly deposited snow we laid a nice track down to the pass.  I&#...
Niko, I find this link to the week-long graphical depiction of the different telemetry sites around the state particularly useful:
http://slum.dyndns.org:8090/plots/plots.html

Check out the 24-hour snowfalls and total snow depth of Stevens Pass (only the Highway site is working now) and Mission Ridge. Colchuck Dragontail usually falls about half way inbetween.

Incidentally in my browser when I click on one of the telemetry sites the graphs often load in below the visi...
Yowser!  I've hiked and camped in many of those places, but never in the winter.  Rugged trip!  Thanks for the great TR!

Cool! Awesome video & thanks for the conditions report!
WOW

thanks for the great tr, it makes me shiver.

Thanks for the awesome pics Kyle! way to find the pow. Man Stuart sure is a cool looking mtn.
right on mang, thanks for the report, great to hear about trips out there.
Thanks guys.  We can check that one off the list.

ovrthhills - yes we looked at the weather report.  We expected some snow and potential low clouds, but did not expect the wind to be so bad.  That was a surprise  ;)

Next year there's talk of the Bailey range...
That my friend is awesome.
Nice work.
Thanks Salal -- that approach gully would be much more fun with snow, but it looks like the face is still going to be wet for a while...
Nice Survival.  Monday was an unusual weather event for this time of year.
What a great day it was and a perfect finish to our skiing Europe vacation.  Here's to our fearless leader and wonderful guide.  Thanks again Silas!!
Wow. What an ordeal and test of resolve. Props to you & your group and for the great TR..
Yes that would be Ale Capone.
We followed some tracks down off trail and did some rather brutal bushwhacking but managed to get back on trail around 4,000 feet.

Nope no Ice axe but luckily I have another one  ;).
By the way your Alaska trip is looking rather sick.
Nice pics Kyle and good job sniffing out the pow.  Was the Scott with you our own Ale Capone?
I'll bet you guys liked the trail down.  When I was out there everything was bulletproof and the trail treacherous.  Off trail was not an option for us with all of the deadfall and low snowcover.  I can just see you skiing down with your skins on.  Good ski practice for when you decide to get serious about the ski mountaineering thing.  ;)

Did y...
Love the photo video -- it was inspiring.  You guys seem like a very strong party -- there was some incredible terrain.
Thanks for this and the more detailed TR on your other website. Would you hazard a guess as to conditions at Colchuck & Dragon this Saturday? We've been having fast moving weather in Seattle--but yours is a different country. N
