It's good to be Home!  Thanks to Richard for carrying the tent to Eldorado and giving Oyvind and I the kick in the rear we needed to go bag Primus.
Here's a shot of the snowmobile triggered slide just after it happened.  We were standing on the ridge about 15-20 feet of the fracture line.  Pretty good spot for a slide - wind loaded, east facing, late afternoon... it was a good reminder of what can happen even in spring conditions.  I am glad the biler got out of the way, since he didn't notice it at first.    The slide was in the upper left of the photo with the megamids on crag view ridge.  Nice chat...
Oyvind, Joe and Tobae.    That was the best trip ever!  Thanks for such a great time.  Here are a couple of photos:
Some had already gone.  We didn't see anything slide directly, but we had our backs to that view for most of the time.  I might have noticed a few more slides there on the way down than I remember on the approach.  There we a couple point releases off the N-NE slopes of Mt. Ruth.  Could also hear some rocks falling on Mt Ruth, which makes sense with some of the fist size rocks embedded in the snow near there.
Nice to meet you guys up there--I was in the party of 4 skiers camped nearby.  Glad you had good conditions for the descent.  We skiied the RW a bit early--your pic makes it look way more fun than the scratchy carefulness we descended--but we were concerned the Squak was going to oversoften.  We too had an absolute blast ripping the Squak.  Glad to imagine another couple sets of sweet ski tracks to balance out all of that highmarking mess.  It actually seemed that the &#...
Nice tracks...that rock "blast" is pretty impressive!
Nice slog. looks like a lot of point releases on those E aspects in your picture of the ridge by St. Elmos...did those release while you guys were up there or had they already gone.
If I didn't know that was pollen on the bottom of your board I'd think it was the shilouette of conifers rising over rolling glades.
This trip was my first summit ascent of Baker, and from what I can tell the Squak is the best route for a direct climb and the ability to link 30 degree plus slopes on the descent (to 6,000 feet). As Scott details in his TR we timed our climb to achieve the best ski conditions on the upper mountain, and it was perfect! We ripped the Roman Wall and the Squak from the summit to 6,000 feet in about a half hour laughing the whole way as we harvested sweet corn turns.

What a visually stun...
We skied the bowl in your first picture a couple of years ago after the road was open to Waterhole.  Its a nice line  which steepens as it decends into a creek drainage.  When will the road be open to waterhole?
Wow - that's an impressive bit of rockfall there. I don't recall seeing that happen up there before - looks like an interesting event.

Any take on how much snow is let to melt between the pumphouse and Windy Pass on FR 9070? It took until nearly the end of June last year...
Nice work it looks like we missed you by a half hour

On another note when summiting Rainer yesterday someone fell into a steam cave and got badly injured requiring a heli evac from the summit crater.

Be carefull out there
Nice.  Looks like you guys hit it just right!  Great weather and good snow!
We did the  Squak over May 23-24, and will second the recommendation from RafMax.  Great moderate skiing from about 9800' to 5800'.  Very direct, very filled in right now.
Very, very nice, Don. Glad you two finally made it.  :)
thanks Oyvind, Joe and Richard for a fantastic trip.  The photos hardly do justice to the scenery though.
My partner was up on Thursday with her friend, they came upon a pair of skies lookers left of lower Nash in the tree's... Probably the result of a double eject. She said it looked like evidence of an alien abduction.

one ski track visible from the summit going off the ENE side of the peak.

;D
Nice work guys that approach must be way less brutal then from pole creek.

What route did you take.

Kyle, after skinning up to the col west of devil's hill, we skinned up the red line then skied the green. It makes for 2000vf of uninterrupted fall line skiing, then about 1000vf of semi-traversing turns, then another 1000vf of tree skiing after crossing the long plateau. There were many other groups picking their own combination o...

What route did you take.

We took the standard southside route from Devil's Lake.
Thanks for the report - I'm headed to Green Lakes tomorrow.  Looks like it should be good.  We're hoping to do the South Sister and Broken Top on Monday and Tuesday.
Good job Rusty!
First time down the Chute is always a memorable experience.
Stewie and I camped in the Tatoosh last nigh 5/22 and had  a great view of the chutes.
Skiing was not great today but we got some turns in.
What route did you take.
Rusty Knees - Thanks for the update!!
Tons of coverage on the north aspects, all the way into the valley. not so much for the south facing side. This is the best pic i can find of the north facing side, taken from the top of obstruction pt:
yeah, great day and thanks for all those who joined us. i think i've avoided south sister for so long due to her reputation as a beginner's mountain, but after today's ski i regret that i hadn't skied this mountain long ago...what a blast!

p.s. i found a climbing helmet on the standard climbers route. pm me if you know who's it is.
We started our ascent from the meadows parking lot, then up to the top of cascade. There were a few large shallow wet slides on the face set off from the day before, and we set off a few more slow moving slides, but no real avy danger.

We avoided the southside route because of memorial day traffic, although from the crater rim we only saw about 30 climbers. There were 2 good looking ski tracks that appeared to venture to west crater rim then down the zigzag though...props to whoever p...
A friend skied it today and said the lower 1/3 was real mushy and a fracture line & avy debris to skier's left.  We went to Reflection Lakes to skin to Castle but at 0830 there was a wet easily breakable crust over 6+ inches of sugar snow over another breakable crust on the first 100 yds up, we turned around and went home.
Don ,
Nice report . think I'll try buy my way out of mush with some elevation.

Rusty Knees -what was your start time?  What time was "corn o'clock?"  Thanks.

Hi Sltbrdr, We started skiing from Anvil around 2:30, I think.  We didn't hit real corn till the bottom of the chutes.  Up higher, it was jsut a soft film of soft new over the firm base.  Top of the chutes it was 2-3" of soft, mushy, snow.  I...

Thanks for the heads up.

Yes, but what about the meltout swag?  ;)

Nice pair Oakley goggles, lens intact and in fine shape. EMP-style metallic lens, that *bling* look that only a snowboarder would wear  ;)
Yes, but what about the meltout swag?  ;)
where did you start your ascent from?
Sweet - we were going to do the face last weekend but did the soutside instead due to Avy danger.  Love to see the pics............
Robert--biking on the road was pure suffering and added about 4 hours to our approach time.  We probably would have skied the Easton if we had realized how much work that would be...  On the other hand, you'd probably have Heliotrope Ridge and the Coleman all to yourself!
David--I only noticed a few spots with the telltale sag of a hidden crevasse.  I think that the big snows in March and the the cool temps in April and May have kept the bridges solid and only the big crevasses are an issue right now.  By my estimation the route was very safe, however this was my first time on the Coleman Glacier.
Thanks for the report.  How were the conditions in Badger Valley?
Nice trip, you guys!  We did that same route last August, didn't get quite as high, but also on several inches of new powder.  Ahhh Baker!
Cool tour and photos!  The only time of the year when the Crapcadian is tolerable...
Try the squak glacier...probably the best of the 3 common baker ski routes. You get to just bomb rollers for about 4k after you get off the roman wall.
Clarence - Can you tell me if there are any crevasse issues either above Heliotrope Ridge (the 1st steep slope of the lower glacier) or higher up on the route?  Looks very filled in with fresh, which would tell me there are some hidden bridges loooooming.
Nice work travis.  Mt adams next weekend?

Chris
Thanks for the TR.  I am thinking about this for next weekend.  It looks like it is a longer trip than when I have done it before.  It looks like you guys hit the timing perfectly.
Thanks for posting, I try to get up there at least once each year.  I do not have the right equipment for telemark or rondonee skiing, but ski the chutes with down hill skiies I rarely have seen marks for other skiers.  Last weekend I skied Sonora pass and hope to get up to Ebbetts this weekend.

Here is a post from last year- Go to the bottom
