Hi All,

I went up the hill today with the intent to remove the metal stakes.  Due to frozen ground and some extra pressure from snow creep, they are not easy to remove.  We also intend to use them (and the attached silt fences) to help maintain any sediment that may move during the spring melt.

So I flagged the tops of all of them with orange flagging.  In addition, there will be bamboo poles installed adjacent to each stake within the next couple days.

There a...

Frankly , yes.

Perhaps the folks at the ski area could come up with some nice big orange danger signs or the like.

When I was up there Thanksgiving weekend there was a staff person there that warned me about them, I'd seen Marcus' post too and was ready for them and they did not dissappoint.  But do they really need to flag them?  After all, according to them th...
These fences are very short and the only purpose was that they made some government evrimentalist feel good,  do they take away your balls if you live in the 206 area code to long?

I like the idea of flagging them with bamboo poles and if no one will help that is what I am going to do.

I am really thinking someone could get hurt

I would still cut the fence down with peoples help, I will bring a metal 14" gas powered cut off saw
Skied Hyak yesterday.  My two cents: I would think that the poles and associated silt fences are there for erosion control which will matter most when the snow melts.  I imagine the ski resort and the homeowners down the hill who were already affected by last years land slide won't be happy if someone rips them out.  I'd hate to see the Hyak get closed to downhillers (as opposed to cross-country types) over something like this.  Also, the erosion control measures ma...
Hey!  I thought I saw your car in the Yodelin lot, but it turned out to be a couple of other splitboarders.  I figured you'd be one of the ones who was dumb enough to be out there :)

We had only a little whoomphing, but the 15" layer moved easily and could be a real problem once it firms up, if that crust doesn't decompose a bit.

Spent yesterday patrolling for the Lakeside Ski Club race at Cabin Creek.  Man, those skate skiers cover a lot of gr...
"Skis beautifully, carves well for such a wide ski, front end felt quiet and comfortable."  Kontour = Manaslu on steroids!!

Wow, it's great to see you upholding the UNR mechanical engineering tradition of ski innovation, following in the footsteps of Hub Zemke: http://www.theskijournal.com/issue/2.3/feature/Hexcel

Did Drew sign a release for the photo?  If not, maybe he can sue and supplement his fat paycheck as a "professeur du ski" at the Summit.<...
Hey Marcus, we just MIST you! Was down the road a bit at a more likely named 'rainy' pass.

Nice pit profile. Our soggy day sounds simular except we experianced a lot of whoomphing while traveling. Found the same TG, with a good layer of facets under the crust. 4'000 ish, west facing.

That's a sweet looking ski and a ridiculously cute dog, Kam.
Curious if they are serving some purpose such as erosion control and they wouldn't want folks to take them out?
Sorry, a few corrections, we were on Klahhane Ridge and the last run out was Bowling Alley.
Stupid enough to go ski there in the rain today (Dec. 20th).  Slight rain crust all the way to the top.  Most of the steeper old growth sections had crusty tree bomb debris with some patches of more skiable wet snow in-between.  Light rain early in the day gave way to heavier rain by early afternoon as we departed, thoroughly drenched.  No pictures.  Ready for more snow...
Erm, you might check with the owners of the posts (the ski area, I presume) before you remove the posts from the property they lease. The ski area may even help you remove them, as it's a liability issue for them (I bet people sled up there too....).

Good luck! :)
Thanks for the great Pics....
Thanks for the inspiring report,
It does not look as much fun as skiing in the rain at Crystal today.  ;)

When I first read these metal posts were sticking out I thought lashing some bamboo to them would do the trick. I'll help dig 'em out if that works - my schedule is open this week..
I'm free on Wednesday.
about the fox problem at the park .. go here to the mt rainier climbing blog and scroll down to "Terminated" to read about it:
http://mountrainierclimbing.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html
The park has had problems with conditioned foxes for a number of years--people keep feeding them.  This year we implemented winter food storage regulations in the Paradise area to help.  There are lots of people who "just want to get a picture", which is the cause of many of the problems.

Andy, we just missed you this week--we were out the day you headed to Mazama--we got shooting cracks, lots of whumpfing, and easy shears.  Spooky times.
Thanks for the thorough snow report.  Where were you exactly?

I couldnt help but try to get a picture of the bird. As far as the fox goes.. I went to grab my camera from my pack and it came running over. So I think they're pretty conditioned. I've never heard of the park having a fox problem though

Nice pix.  Did you see the "don't feed the wildlife" sign at the parking lot?  And were you notified of the food conditioned foxes in the area?

Hey Mason, I was notified by the fox in the parking lot following all the people around :-)  Lot of fox and even marten, and 1 set of weasel tracks in the snow in the bc.
Thanks for the report Lee. Thinking of heading up there soon... Good to have complete snow science in reports. Maybe you will start a good trend... And to answer the inevitable question...It's in BC and it's off the Duffey Lake Road.
Nice pix.  Did you see the "don't feed the wildlife" sign at the parking lot?  And were you notified of the food conditioned foxes in the area?
Awesome 2nd photo, sometimes the scenery is worth it even when the skiing isn't.  It's always nice when the two coincide though:)
Yep.  James of Tacoma, Jennifer of Seattle.
Marcus,
For the first time in eons I didn't take any pictures.  Sorry. Right now I am struggling with how to organize my 8,500 pictures, a bit overwhelming with my lack of computer savvy.
Jane
you must have been the guy with the gal I met on Mazama ...

Nice Larry!  Got any pictures?

Just a couple of pics of the tracks should the RD office want them. Jane might have a pic or two.
Nice Larry!  Got any pictures?  We were thinking of heading out Blewett way, but it sounded pretty thin this weekend.
A group of us snowshoed up the Nordic pass route last night for a solstice party at Hyak Lake. There was light mist at Hyak then some fog. Snow is very heavy but most logs are covered. Met a groomer on the CC trails. It woud be pretty thick for skiing.
Hi Holly,

Nice to hear that you and Peter stopped by.  I assume Silas will be taking you out near Crystal or Paradise or Baker on Friday/Saturday with the weather break.  Enjoy the PNW views before the next cycle begins Sunday.

Jill and I may stop by Tahoe late spring.  I'll email you if we are around Incline.

...this thread is tied for most TR posts in December.  Yeah Windy Pass!
The snow quality improved noticeably above 3500' level; there it had a thin freezing rain crust atop 8-12" of midweight powder, much better than we expected.  We were told the skiing was excellent at Alpental in the morning, and unfortunately chair 2 broke down midday.
Yep, check your owner's manual.  I believe this is specifically addressed.
nice report.

my guess is that silas stopped in at the admin office and tried to get his pass too ;)  any luck?  funny that he dug his gloves out today.  2 days ago it was a ski from his yard sale. :)

enjoy the rest of your stay!
last winter I toured with a friend who was using a Tracker and during a beacon check I could not pick up his signal until he was about 4 feet away. He could pick up my signal though. He replaced his batteries with his spares and it worked great after that. Thus our conversation was about beacons and batteries... he informed me to never use Lithium batteries in a beacon. The reason is something about when they run out of juice, the go all at once with no gradual fade out indicating to the user th...
Damn, still?  I posted about those a month ago -- can't believe we've gotten so little snow.  They're holding up the landslide fabric that they put in last summer.  A recipe for injury, for sure.
Hyak alert. Watch out for metal spikes holding up some fence material on the cat track/landslide area. There is only about 12-18 inches sticking out, but when they are barely covered with snow and someone falls on them it's going hurt REAL BAD.
Andy ,
thanks for the avy report !
so... got new batteries in and the tracker still didn't find anyone in search.  Previous batteries were standard alkalines, and were reading 89 in the warm indoors.  Looks like he's gotta get ahold of BCA.  The beacon is 4 years old, so we'll see what their response is.

...wish I was up at Hyak now...

Looks like a lot of fun!  I really like the cam perspective off the back, too, with the blue sky and buddy in the background.
Looks fun. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
Believe me, I'm not spurning Hyak... but the groomed trail only bears so much chat.

My wife's first tracker eventually stopped turning from Tx to Rx (or some similarly large issue) -- it was out of warranty, but BCA offered her a new beacon at cost when we sent it in to them.  Pretty good deal.
Hyak is a quick ride from Seattle, it's nice to warm up on the groomed runs and then go off to Silver peak or Catherine depending on conditions - this is a great no brainer solo destination..to continue drifting: I bought a tracker from a craigslist ad two seasons back - it was new in the box and worked fine. I never registered with BCA or sent a warranty card.  I recently pulled it out of its summer resting place and the on/off switch was broken off in a way that did not seem logical, I ha...
Ha!  No worries -- how interesting can a conversation about the logging road between Hyak and Windy Pass possibly be?  This is perfect.
Sorry for the thread drift Marcus.

Rusty, that sounds like exactly the same symptoms.  I'll ask him what batteries he's been using.  Thanks.
That's a great shot of it Boot, thanks!

Unfortunately, I could see more of the top of Baker than of Glacier!!!!  The top was in a cloud, but I could see the flanks and all around from Pugh to Lost Cr Ridge to Black Mt to White Mt to Indian Head...

Here's a panorama looking towards GP (on left) and around to the SE towards Indian Head (on right).

trees4me:  I added pic above.  It was actually last May that I was up there.  The couloir definitely caught my eye ;).  Did you get a good shot of Glacier from top of Painted?

GaryJan:

I was skiing at the Ridge both yesterday and again this afternoon.  Flurries today did not amount to much in the way of new snow. "Steep and Icy" is steep and icy and inspired at least two pinners to take off their skis and walk it.  Maybe an inch or so of snow on top of ice there.  Still signs of the trail winding up to the top the Hill with predictable ice, grass,...
