Well I wouldn't say they were going that far. But they sure were delightfully enjoying each other in a grand spot. Perhaps we are missing something on our tours? ;)
Glad to see you still enjoying one of your original Cascadian tours! How was the trek thru the woods? Looks like the snow was super compared to our tour on Mt. Catherine just a day later...
Hey. Robie & Dave thanks for dragging me along for another great day that beat the weather forecast by a mile. Next time we'll have to bring a rope so you two can pull me up the last 500 feet.
It was only after I got home that I remembered something that could maybe give a little insight into the couple that seemed to be interested in extracurricular activities other than skiing. Duh...the 8th of May! http://www.yelp.com/events/chicago-national-outdoor-intercourse-day

We tried to walk the plowed road, the road crew was polite but said no, evidently they are working Tuesday thru Friday and don't want skiers on the road below. On Friday they just made it past the first hairpin turn

We followed your trails on Saturday. Found some sweet corn on the shoulder. Only saw one other party in the area. Thanks for a nice uptrack. Ranger said Chinook likely open next weekend.
We did the same tour up on Friday, most likely followed your skin track up. Almost totally consolidated on Friday after Thursday' sun. We had a pleasant lunch on top while we waited for the snow to soften for the ski down. No movement anywhere even on some of the steeper pitches.

Wonderful collection of data. About 13 years ago just after a Japanese company purchased my partners and my systems integration firm, I went to Japan on a "business trip". I also brought my backcountry gear to ski Mt. Fuji. I was unable to put it together, It's enjoyable to see the various amounts of data now. Thanks for posting the information.
A little different conditions higher up on Muir. See my post.
Thanks for reporting on the road opening. Sounds like you were on or near Foss peak .
Ive done that same trip as you on bike with trailer. Cept with my old junk bikes we just kinda of threw them behind a snow bank.
Good corn will come soon.

Nice TR! 7k, healthy day. Well done. Looks like great terrain and skiing.
That's interesting that you guys skied out the drainage rather than hoof it out. Was the creek drainage pretty filled in? Was one side of Dewey Creek better than the other to ski out?
There are some cool chutes I've skied on the Naches side down to the lower knolls at the base of Seymour. But you need a good snowpack to pull that off like they have now since they opened with a good snowpack.

How long did it take you to tour from Cayuse to Chinook? At the moment the mileage escapes me.
Cayuse to Chinook is very short, about a half mile to get onto a ski terrain. If you continue on PCT w/o going up on Naches, it is a easy day tour to Dewey leaving a lot of time to explore. I guess I may soon be going back there for more.

That Parcher's run is very worthwhile if you haven't done it (though it sounds like you probably have...). Following that drainage up past Brown and Green lakes leads to more stupendous terrain and you can follow the bowls all the way up to a ridge at close to 13k, with stupendous views of Cloud Ripper peak and the northern edge of the Palisades.
The show just goes on in the S...
Beautiful shot of Dewey. For years I've had a plan to camp at Dewey and spend a couple of days skiing the unlimited lines, maybe even heading over to Cougar Lake and Cougar Peak.

Thanks for the correction skimac. You're right, it is Sierra (no s). I guess I had my brain in Anglo gear while writing the TR.
June lakes is amazing. During our storm day we considered heading up to Fern Lake, but ended up going to Bardini in Mammoth, which was outstanding. Carson Peak was also on the tentative 'to ski' list, though it will have to wait for another year. As will Gibbs, Ritter, the Negatives and lots of other places. Too many options eh?

Thanks Zap. Hopefully they will clear the road all the way to the lake soon.
We actually talked to a guy in the parking lot who was a part time plow driver and he tried to convince the county road crew that drove by to let him "drop that blade and start pushing" all the way up to the lake. He chose to ski the Parcher's run instead of following the road. A wise choice!

fun stuff zap .. sorry about jill's misery .. i think i can totally relate .. i'm having the same pain .. but starting with acupuncture .. those cortisone shots sound pretty effective though

Amazing pics. Looking at some of the rocks along the way, it looks like about 5 feet of snow fell since I was there a couple of weeks ago.
Not a lot to add to Tyler's TR, the pictures do a better job of telling the story.

Picture 2: Jan confirming Tyler's assessment.
Picture 3: Sunset over the North Bowl and the Bailey Range

Jim great report I'm jealous I lived in June Lake for many years and I long for the spring skiing there. Just a note it's the Sierra not Sierras. Sierra is already the plural in Spanish and Cali. talk. Keep on enjoying that Cali. spring skiing.
Excellent TR and photos. Jill and I drove to the area at the base of the V Trees on May 4 after my tour of Black Mt. We spoke to a couple of guys who had just skied the same area. There are so many options in the area. It's amazing how good the food is at Mo Mart. Tioga Pass should be opening soon.
Zap your killing me with these reports could you just enjoy yourself in silence ;D I hope Jill starts to feel better.
We were there! Skied off the top at about 8:00 PM and found some great snow on the way down. The skiers making margaritas on their tailgate as we headed out though had the right idea.
Peter wanted to ski on his Praxis so he duct taped two sets of skinny ski skins to each ski and used some patched together day wreckers (Trekkers) to tour on that broke again on the way up. The skins started to let go as well on the upper mountain so we were a little delayed on our way to the top.

Welcome to TAY, BC. Good pictures - still looks like winter up there.
Nice TR and photos. We drove up toward South Lake last week and it was plowed to Parchers. Being seniors, we wait until the plows reach the TH parking area. As you realized, there are many routes in the area. Ski Mountaineer is an excellent tour once the road iis plowed.
OMG ... that's gorgeous .. i've been in the sierras a bit .. and really glad to be home .. thx for the beautiful pix
Boy, you picked a really ugly place for your first tour! Nothing interesting to look at all. ;-)
Nice work!
We'll have to set-up the car-shuttle option with other TAYers the next time there's spring exodus to the Sierra.
Hope you and your ski buddy are responding well to your medications, and that you're both able to get out and ski a bit more in the next few days.

We saw at least 5 groups gettin' it on for Cinco turns. We hit the window -- surprisingly good conditions top to bottom at c. 7PM. Fun evening.
Yeah David, and fortunately they don't stick to your skins.
Zap, Jill - Hope those med's are kicking in Jill, and you're on Mammoth today enjoying thos big sweeping turns through the corn! You know, you guys are really doing us youngsters a big favor, beta'ing all these structural procedures so when we eventually get there too we'll know what to do and who to turn to!! Glad you found a first class surgeon.

You gotta love it when the Doc really understands who you are. I ski with mine and kayak with my dentist. The lawyer...? well.., i just pay him.
author=Zap link=topic=16588.msg69398#msg69398 date=1273120742] The fishermen gave me big smiles as I poled back across the lake, and a few relayed to Jill that “he’s crazy”. That certainly was a nice compliment. ;) Hopefully, my ski buddy’s cortisone shot will “kick in” soon, and we can cruise the corn at Mammoth on Wednesday.
As for you Zap... well there is no cure for "Crazy"! The only temporary solution I know is more...
I really enjoyed your report Andy, creatively written.
Also, the Chiwuakum B-Day tour report you did a couple years ago was a great read.
I spent a lot of my teen years there, smack dab in the valley near Dorthy's Chandelier Inn, staying at a friends cabin. We skied, hiked and fished the upper lakes and Nason Creek area, so your local reports really interest me.
Thanks for re-awaking such great memories from less concerned times.

I dropped off the top at 8:30 pm - Upper Nash was pretty good, but I found the refreezing goo at mid-elevation to be less fun. Bottom of the mountain skied like refreezing butter. I'd originally intended to head back up Thursday morning for turns, but I'm not sure conditions were good enough to make the drive again.
I bet there's some goodness to be found in Edelweiss Bowl. Spindrift had filled in the skintrack along the upper reaches of 2, and wind effects were starti...

I think I was skinning up with you guys. I was the one in the red hat. Great beginning to the cinco de mayo.
The snow was a little bit crusted on more southern facing aspects. But very nice for the most part.

Upper Nash was definitely well preserved even this evening. Snake Dance was pretty fun going down to the base too.
Excellent Cinco de Mayo skiing!

I like approaches from the White Pine -- the trail let's you line up with various objectives and then you get a steep, direct climb. Some of those climbs align with nice old-growth forests that are easy to move through. And a few don't.
I understand now the reason Baker is some serious competition for Shames's title of most snowfall of any resort in NA (in fact I think it actually has beat us). That photo of the mostly buried sign is money, and it's May! Well done sir, I shall report on my hill after the weekend ;D

Wow, nice looking snow! Saturday on Goat it was pudding and slushy tree bombs, what a difference a couple of days and a dump later.
Yeah, the cold temps and dry snow were a very pleasant surprise, especially for this late in the season.

Did they have the road plowed pretty well since the ski area is closed?

Just as long as Chris did not take 2 to the 63rd minutes to get his Dynafits to click in, I guess all is good. No hammer and chisel required this time?
Skinned up to source lake with JimH, then up Draft Dodger to the top of Stokes. 3 " of fluff on a suncrust with concrete below. Sun came out and the top 3" quickly became reactive to ski cuts, and on steeper, less supported rolls got it to step down through the suncrust. Just loose debris, but running pretty fast. We quickly tiptoed out the car to folks BBQing in lot 4. It skied better than expected with fat boards. Soft and steamy: like Dim Sum.
