DavidG - thanks for mentioning that. I'd heard about the idea of connecting the different resorts before, but hadn't heard that a BC access permit system was being considered. That's something that should get all of our attention, even if we're not SLC locals. It would be great to hear more if someone has the information.
Thanks for mentioning it, and for reminding me that I need to book some time in the Big or Little Cottonwood BC.

this is almost as good as east coast/west coast beef! [and easily as banal]

how you did train her.
Edit: Does your dog wear a beacon? Id be afraid of tree wells with my dog...
I didn't do any specific training related...
Pics would be good. An overnighter in heaven..
So, assuming you're a local there, clint, can you tell us what's going on with the move afoot to require permits for bc entry? What i picked up was that it was being driven by private landowners in cottonwood canyon (there's a thread over at teatips)
One should not underestimate the possibility of a public...

your dog is awesome! did you train her to rock the snow so well? honestly, I'd love to feel safe and confident to bring my dog skiing with me. Love to know how you did train her.

Good job picking up Samtheworkingman's slack. It's just what you gotta do to be famous internet skiers. ;)
The first picture really transports me to the top of that line.
I think I'm gonna air into it...

didn't know him. RIP
Very nice. As jimmyjan said Stone Man has been on my list for many years as well.

peace, love, unity, respect, and apologies for the f'ing essay. and for not using any emoticons. my bad. lastly, i'd like to thank Lagunita's Brown Shugga for making this possible.
[full disclosure: alpymarr is a personal friend and powcomplice]
we be stylin now 'mon.. 8)
Looks like a great run... nice video as well!
Nice job on skiing Stone Man and on your website. I've stared at Stone Man for many years on the drive into the upper parking lot but never managed to ski it. To ski Stone Man is more committing than it looks from the the road.

Awesome!
(Except that I'm trying to get some work done and now I'm distracted by a whole stack of new TRs that need to be read.) :'(
Thanks for sharing - Cool web site
The irony of complaining about overcrowding at a particular spot while writing a trip report about this spot is almost too much to bear. Stop going to paradise if you dont like seeing people. Dont complain about people if you are forced to go to paradise because you always ski alone. It only makes you look like an asshole if you are the guy up at paradise giving everyone else shit for not knowing the "rules".
As for following skin tracks, how can you complain about powder n...

It depends somewhat on which area and how busy they are.
Some of the land is privately owned and some is forest service.
My experience at Hyak / Summit East is not being hassled when the lifts aren't running. On Wednesday while we skinning up the front side directly from the parking lot, one of the guys working on the new chairlift stopped on his sled while heading up to work on the top station and in a very friendly manner asked us to avoid skiing directl...

do you just hike from the pkg lot?
There's an old thread somewhere with details about when it is and is not ok to skin up Summit areas. Definitely stay out of the way of lift-ops/grooming crews, any downhill traffic. etc. Avoiding injury and not skinning up when they're spinning lifts will go a long way toward maintaining a friendly relationship with the s...

Thanks for putting that info about the surface hoar forward. I was down the ridge and it seemed to be everywhere. Well developed crystals on all aspects...might be something to keep an eye out for as the pack builds.
Wish I would have caught up with you and Jan and Jeff but it was not meant to be this trip. Had some good turns though. :)

Just got back from there as well. We saw you skiing down as we were climbing up. The backside had better overall snow, when you average the nice-ish top 100' feet with the terrible bottom 500' of trap-crust on the frontside.
Took two laps down the back and one down the front. The snow was pretty bad, but we had fun.

This Thread is NOT dead because this is a discussion about getting NOT DEAD.
I found one of the most helpful things about this post to be cookiemonster and his cool 3D map. the weather forecast for that would also have sent me to the old growth of Commonwealth or Stevens....places where I know I can find 20 degree trees without avi paths or terrain traps. I think a major lack in this discussion was the terrain.... regardless of the avi forecast. Combine the weather...

Mmmm, I love the blackberry pie from Copper Creek Inn! The lemon pepper chicken is quite the meal, as well.

Saw evidence of slide activity likely from yesterday, crown face on Kendall Knob, and a few other ordinarily benign places.
I dug around a bit at the top of Hyak waiting for the sun to come up yesterday morning. There was a pretty easy sliding layer about 40 cm down that could've been an issue if Hyak was steeper. Maybe hoar frost from late last we...

Whoa! Sorry to hear that Robie. The deer (and there are lots!) around here are pretty tame from being fed (sometimes by hand) in my neighborhood and from people feeding them from cars. I'm sure...
thanks to everyone who has contributed to the furtherance of backcountry philosophy and etiquette, in this thread and elsewhere, especially to those who have made themselves vulnerable. this is for no one in particular and everyone in general.

Joe on the road to Reflection
That's the wrong Joe!
Should have been me!
Way to slay it R, G and E! Much better up track than the post hole parade we saw on Sunday. I was in the orange jacket talkin Drifter tech with you. Paul (weaver on TAY) and I did a few more laps and things seemed to soften as the temp warmed, but not the mash. Hopefully this will stick to the rocks and give us a nice solid base. Saw evidence of slide activity likely from yesterday, crown face on Kendall Knob, and a few other ordinarily benign places.
Didn't see another person once I left the lot

Waitaminute...crowded, overtracked and obnoxiously touristy up at Paradise!? Nahh, ya don't say! *rolleyes* What do you expect? The Paradise environs hardly even count as backcountry; after all, a road gets plowed up over 5,000 feet. If the book "Ski Touring for Dummies" was written, the first chapter would include a map to Paradise. It's the third stop for a great number of B...
Nice to meet you Robie! Good points. These gentlemen were kind enough to actually interact with me..we need more of this in crowded areas. Just simply communicating makes things so much easier, and you may even make friends. Its just the whole barrage of huge groups who wont give you the time of day that swoop in from above with their ten guys, make huge GS turns, spot your track and then use it to kill the place in 5 minutes. No hello, nothing. Thats what happened and thats why I brought it up....
No, that was just metaphorically speaking about his earlier work.
Yes, my 10th mtn would have worked fine except a few pitches, but I was testing my NTN gear, which seemed overkill at times, but toured/skied well.

Just kinda savoring the fact that I was one of Alpymarr's "Cool and Mellow guys"

The spill was actually a jack knifed tandem trailer. which also caused at least one other to vacate the road way. Scary cuz it was in teh eagle falls area of thin road way. I was only ten cars back from the accident. Sat in park for a...
