for what it's worth, the only reason i posted anything was because i liked skiing with Gus and wanted to get him some attention. I couldn't care less about secret stashes and local treasures. If something is worth skiing it's worth skiing, regardless of how many times it's been skied. That's just my opinion of course. But my memory and sense of direction are so bad that every time out is a first descent anyway.....

We don't show Silas, either.

;D Funny.
but it does illustrate to those that feel posting TR's is a TAY community service that others may feel different  when it affects them. We're all selfish aren't we.?
We don't show Silas, either.

Claim that women are not pretty appears suspicious. This may be decoy post. Heading north to investigate. Begin preparations for full on siege. Over.

I think you are right. ;D
My latest theory= Silas skis with Tim Place and knows all his secret stashes in B'hmaster zone but is banned from posting TR's under penalty of banishment ( Blueberry Chutes are a...
Nice, I haven't been there in years. Do you mind my asking how you went in?  Satus Pass or up from Goldendale?  I've only been in the Satus Pass way but I wonder about the other way in, the approach described in Vielbig's book.

Because there is nothing to write about. Slack-country gets tracked out by 10 Am (one would have to leave Seattle by 4 Am to make it)  back country is north-facing and always wind loaded, extremely dangerous, road sucks, there is no good beer anywhere, women are not pretty, man smell bad and some speak funny, and we can't write (I paid ghost-writer a lot of money for this short comment)

Crazy. It definintely looked like it could have been skier triggered. Scary stuff. Thanks for the heads up.
I was touring up in this area today and it was a little scary, we decided to bail after finding lots of nasty windslab around on SE facing aspects. As we left for the day it was sleeting/graupeling hard and the wind was strong out of the S at high elevation.
Toured the Tatoosh on Saturday the 4th. Made the decision to avoid the rollover on the lower slopes as mentioned. We did witness 2 skiers decending the rolloverslope from a distance below. One skier stopped mid slope in the an obvious avalanche chute. I had just mentioned to my partner that was now wise when a fracture occured approximately 10' above carring the skier to the bottom of the slope. We were about to skin up to give assistance when we heard the shouts that he was not injured. Sh...
yep...that's where I went.  you'd think this looker would treat us better but she doesn't.  I saw evidence of some monster avi activity a couple years ago when I went.  debris the size of a small house which had slid almost 2000 verts.  amazing.  it was an epic rain event that caused it.
sweet trees, sweet video.  valhalla is awesome!

Next time, you might try going up the shoulder on looker's right as you stare at the summit of Jim Hill. It's a bit less direct but lots less hassle.

second this. that drainage at the bottom can be hell. here's a photo of the lookers right shoulder (once gained)
The slopes around Lake Valhalla especially below are great.  Wide open old growth 25 degree slopes.    Pictures?

Tim , how come you B'hammers don't post more trip reports?

Actually that's Bellinghamsters.  Meaning there have been many hamster descents of Stone Man.

Oh, God, how we pray for more snow at Snoqualmie!!

Tim , how come you B'hammers don't post more trip reports? I for one would love to hear about some more of the choice lines up there.
Thanks for your concern.  Another 30 min, we'd have to use headlamps.  That may have been a good practice since I haven't skied with a headlamp for several years.

Good to know about the parking.  We'll go back soon to ski the West slope in powder.

OP:  Sweet trip!
Scotsman, are you implying Nascar is a sport?

No I think I was implying it was similar to hamster racing.

True , but the hamster is risking a lot even in somebodies pocket. The skier could hip check and squash said hamster. What's the difference between the risks a hamster takes riding in a skiers pocket and a Nascar driver? Same IMHO.

I would have to say if any dog's paws has seen the stone man, it would probably be that bad ass bitch goldie who poached the CJ couloir last winter. I know she was in the baker area for a few days.

CJ couloir????= Cascade Pass CJ couloir??? if so= Park land....no bow wows allowed.
I just think it's nice the OP could take his dog touring with him (...
I saw your car and was more concerned with how late it was than where it was parked.

It looked like it was plowed for parking and I've seen people park there in the past.
You are right. I was being elitist.

As long as the hamsters are enjoying themselves more power to them.

Hamsters and gerbils are different! Hamsters are carried in your pocket... gerbils are carried elsewhere.
Being TAY's Chief Etiquette Officer is proving to be a full time job with all you nincompoops.
Thanks for the skintrack to Rainy Pass, bramski!  I like the route.  Impatient to get off the road, we have always peeled off Smithbrook road just before the switchbacks at the entrance to the clearcut.  Your route seemed less steep and with less obstructions in the old forest.
So that's what the ridge looks like!  I went up with two others on Saturday and attempted to summit.  Not sure if it was you, but we met two others waiting just below the ridge for the weather to turn.  We pushed on, gained the ridge and then got blasted by winds I have never felt before.  If I had my eyes open they would get blasted by hail/snow and if I closed them they would start to freeze shut.  We made it about half way across the ridge and essentially said, &...

Thanks for the data RonJ. Was this profile excavated in a forested area?

Yes.
A few pics HERE.

Nice. I was back there on Saturday. Far as I am concerned they can keep the chairs closed another week or so ... also had an excellent end of day sunset run down Double Diamond, alpenglow lighting Glacier and Chiwaukums etc.
The stuff East of Dudley's, Highland Bowl, Wenatchee Bowl etc is not particularly a secret stash - when the backside chairs are running, you'll see tracks from 100s of people/weekend heading back there. Nearly all of them bootpacking.
As far as finding yo...

I wouldn't give that hamster much respect because pockets are aid. Might as well ride a gondola. Now if the hamster goes up and down on his own, that's epic.

Yeah...when I tried it the epic fail was .5inch raincrust all the way to the top.  My brother and I stayed West of Henry creek and stayed 100-500 verts above Henry the whole way.  still some alder but not too much.

Have you tried the other side?  which side is better?
whiners gonna whine.
haters gonna hate.
Dogs gonna shit in the skin track.

Now back to your regularly scheduled TR's from hiking inside ski area boundaries.

So we were doing an INVENTORY? I knew there had to be some other reason you dragged me down there because it wasn't the good snow. ;)
BTW, your caber tossing technique needs work. ;)

You are the Caber toss master for the midweight division.
A bit of a triathlon it was.
I thought you would enjoy an early season vegetation belay, mixed with sides...
1) Post TR about cool place
2) People show up and rally it
3) People complain about how many BC'rs are hitting their spot...

hmmmm....

Zack and slide alder seem to be a common theme this am.

Nice tour. Happy b-day Zack.
You are very welcome. It was my pleasure, and I'm flattered everybody liked the track.

Sorry the weather wasn't much better for you. At least you could see. Looks like you got a little further then we did. We turned back right at the top of the ridge when we experianced the same body moving winds, and other combination of undesirable elements.

I'm no stranger to skin skiing, tele boarding, split booting... etc. whatever gets you down safe.

My Crystal observations Sunday to late Sunday is that the strong winds have effected the snow on nearly every aspect. Especially on ridgetops with loading on lee slopes. There were very few areas that were protected from any effect. The protected areas were certain convex bowls or drainages that faced NE. Saturday we observed a couple SE nooks that were wind protected by ridgetops, but for the most part even W or SW slopes had some wind effect.
The wind effect was hit and miss on the N-NE s...
Somedays you get "pommeled," go the hard way, and fail.  Regardless we were still smiling on the way out.

Zack
If you follow the swale at the first left hairpin you made, on the west side of the creek, you can gain a bench and make a climbing traverse through old growth in to the lower basin of Henry Creek. This route can be dangerous with a lot of new snow and/or later in the season with morning sun as it crosses the toe of several large slide paths.
How's the coverage/stability on Southern Cross?  Sounds like a fun day!
Thanks for the heads up...we saw a lot of similar evidence, although smaller in size, up north on N-E facing slopes too.
So you're saying there's a chance...

Pierce - We went 9:30 -> 4pm, about a 6 hour tour.

Trees4Me - Yeah, we kind of thought the same thing.  Had we gotten up that ridge a little more expediently I think that Jove would have been a great addition with more vertical.
"The Pommel Horse" -
  1) Stem with right hand on pole/tree
  2) Lift left ski onto log with left hand (frog step kind of motion)
  3) Slide right ski under log and left ski forward (now your left foot is centered over the log so you can stand on it
  4) Step weight onto left foot and stand up while sliding right foot backwards out from under log and stemming/holding onto log with left hand
    5) Use right hand to tip right s...

Pretty skied out...

:D Sorry. The emoticon is straight up for Muscawulf.
Bram, thanks for your confirmation.  The upper slope was inviting viewing from Rock, but the below tree line looked needing a little more snow.
Looks pretty out there!

So what's the story with the slide alder hole and the man in it? Is this maybe where the mythical C.H.U.D. comes from? (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller) - google it.
