When we skied WH a few years ago, there didn't look to be any reasonable way to go up snow gulch, left, right or center. Instead, we ascended a gully climbers' right of the gulch. It was also filled with avy debris at the bottom. We were able to climb out of the gully (2,700' is what I remember) and do a level traverse on the rib/shoulder into the basin, above the cliffs.
Last Spring when we attempted, we were able to attain the basin by going up the main gulch trending clim...
Sweet!
After skiing Friday, I was suprised at how much new snow there was. With the forecasted sun on Saturday I chickened out on committing myself to possibility of having to traverse several unknown south facing slopes on the Stevens to Suprise traverse. Jeff and I made rough plans to come in via moonlight on Sat. Night but 12 ounce curls wrecked that plan. Double fail:( Nice Picts, stuff looks crazy filled in up there.

That's inspiring. What a great finale to the time you've spent up there this winter. Very cool.

As to the ski traverse I did through the area, we just followed the Crest Trail route. With more time it would be great to wander around like you've done, but we were on a Point A to Point B mission, with just two days to get from Stevens Pass to the Cle Elum River. Our loss. It's great to see more of the area. I've done some summer hiking up there a...
Great post Scott!  Good photos too.
i know i'm a little late to this one,  but this is great.  i think some if not most of you are missing lowells point.  his letter many years ago to the editor:

"As someone who writes and speaks about backcountry skiing, I too have wrestled with the question of publicizing secret spots. My solution is to recognize three kinds of backcountry places: 1) those that are already well known and accessible, where additional publicity has little effect; 2) those that are very remote,...
Thanks for the TR.  I've been really curious about the snow gulch route as it appears to be a better ski route than high pass, but it's tough to find much intel on it that makes it sound very appealing.

cool trip.
Sweet way to get out on the Loop!  Bedal is a cool mountain, but those trees really do make you earn it.

So 6k, you must've made the wide open north face?  Good views from there and a pretty nice ski run, if only had the energy to do a couple laps after getting there  :)
Train station and a on mountain cafe, must be in the alps somewhere.
nice work getting up there .. a full moon ski sounds awesome
HEY! look at that ... the man can take some mighty fine photos .. great work scott!
Nice! Wasn't feeling ambitious? Yet 8k?
Awesome work!  I assume pooch wasn't with you for all of that?  Didn't see any puppy tracks in your pictures.

Did you go up and down east of Snow Gulch?  How did you cross it down low?

Sounds like Forest was west of the creek...

Appreciate the trip reports.  I've been wanting to do Whitehorse for a while but had only ever thought about the climbers route through Lone Tree Pass.

Edit: Just read Beckey and believe that you were east of Snow Gulch.
Nice trip report Lowell.  Great pics too!  I still can't believe that crown...that would have been an incredible sight to witness from afar.  We hit Mazama a few weekends ago and brought back some good times of touring! ;)  Whitehorse is still on the tick list, however, I'm guessing it'll be yet another year wait!  Way to nail it.
Awesome - I love that area.  Hard to believe all the goods that Snoqualmie holds, sometimes.
Edit to add my photo album if anyone is interested.

Skied a few laps yesterday morning and the snow is still good. Snow was a little heavy and grabby on the upper part of the slope but the lower half was powder, especially where it was a little protected by trees. Everything was super stable.

Were there others up there?  I was kinda wondering who put in the skin track.  Far far climbers right there is a nice...

I've been the puppy "dad" on the other side of that scenario... thanks for taking care of the pooches!  Bonus exercise for you!
Thanks for the report, Forest, and for the tracks you guys made on Thursday.

I initially posted a few pictures from Friday here, but decided I should start a different thread:

Wow.  Way to get it.  I was eyeing it on the drive back from down south.  That crown is a mind****.
That trip sounds just as nuts reading it as it did hearing it.  Nice to meet you today, Forest.
Just to stir the pot a little, I too think MHM management assumes too much ownership of the public land on which it's licensed to operate the ski area.  It's public land, plain and simple.  Read these two documents regarding the rules under which they operate:

They are bound to these rules.  Unfortunately the Hood River County sheriff and an officer of the Forest Service seems to side closer to MHM than ot...
Great TR Amar, thanks for sharing. You are one of the few old school TAY posters who used to make this site great.

A good comparison is old climbing guidebooks vs modern topos, Roper's Yosemite guide had a few paragraphs to describe the 30 pitch Salethe Wall when I did it - now detailed topos describe every inch of El Cap and even give advice on gear for each pitch. We used to debate whether to even read the guide or to have a 1st ascent adventure (which I often chose on e...
Fabulous Doug...your kiting career is yet to launch...hopefully Pete's enthusiasm rubbed off...
Ditto!!!:-)...sorry, don't now how to make the fancy smiley thingy's...
That 2nd image looks so suspicious Doug...sure that wasn't a grainy archive photo from the leather boot era?...so glad you chose that private stash over the other 25+ trade routes in the corridor.  Wish we had the time and energy to join you after the Phantom anniversary...missed you and the rest of the crew big time...so nice finally putting the demons to rest and ripping the Slot with a great posse.  Boot deep, stable, and 40 seconds of joy in lieu of the 3k, bullet proof approa...

John-
This line is located somewhere in the North American backcountry, hope that helps.

Whoa!  Hold on there Doug.  Beta overload!  You don't want take all the adventure out of this gem.
Damn that Amar.
Now everyone's gonna be making fun of my stashes. ::)
well there goes another perfectly good isolated locals-only stash... cue the masses, the MC is over.

Looks like fun for after work, did you have consistent snow down around the RR grade or lower?
I enjoy the outdoors of the Pacific Northwest.  Ruby Mountain is a beautiful destination.  Thanks for sharing Amar !
Just saw this.  Nice tracks on Crystal.
That makes it look pretty tasty.  Nice.
Nice work, much better conditions that I found it in 2 weeks ago. I found some combination of mush, breakable crust with knee-deep penetration, and avalanche debris.
"Dust Patrol" seems mighty appropriate given the 1/4" snow squall I got at Hyak last night, probably was like that in the lower couloir?

As long as you misspell McClellan no one will know!

I did think the spelling was weird too but blame it on Martin Volken (another non-local) cuz that is how he spelled it in the instruction manual.

Just one more; not our tracks  ;D
I'm asking that you remove this TR.

Uh, where is McClellan anyway?
As long as you misspell McClellan no one will know!
Now that is a trip report!  Fun reading and gaping!  Thanks, Doug.
