I wish I could get those pictures of the Ross Lake panorama in life size.
Nice Tyler! Makes me want to head back out there...
As previously announced by WSDOT, plowing the winter-closed portion of the North Cascades Highway began on Monday, March 26. Here are some photos from the WSDOT Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wsdot/sets/72157629681048559/with/6875190756/
Ski access from the west side to the Happy Creek route on Ruby Mountain has already gotten more difficult now that the only skiable snow is along the sides of the road.

nice job on a beautiful line, lee!
you must have been the one that my party talked to in the white salmon lot on saturday morning while we were waiting for baker to let us onto the mountain.
a couple skiers got by somehow, they got to the couloir way ahead of us. one from our party made it through the crux, barely. the traverse was all pretty much ice at that point so the rest of us climbed back out... it was a little disappointing, but still an exciting a...

great photos! it sure was a beautiful weekend to be out.
i was a little upset and dismayed when i learned that the heli-bombing had been intentionally scheduled for saturday morning specifically to impede access by participants from the splitboard festival..... but then again in this country ruled by tort lawyers, i guess we are lucky to be allowed to tour near resorts at all.

Those pictures are the exact opposite of downtown Seattle today.

I don't know why I was in such a dry mood yesterday and forgot to mention that I really enjoy your pictures. There is one of Shuksan from another TR shot at night that inspired me to take a late cruise up to Artist Point on Sunday just to look around and take some pictures of my own. Thanks for sharing. :)

Fixed the video link in the first post for you -- nice pictures! Hard to believe you escaped from the wombat ;)
Thanks!

I like the captions & can FEEL the first pic :)
I have salivated over those lines countless times in the car, but given the cross-valley viewing angle I had no idea if the slope was inside the bounds of sanity. Now that I've read this I'm even more stoked to go there!
Very nice. Got up there earlier this season and had an amazing day.

Last year we skied Silver Star on May 31. We approached from the south and hit snow about about a half mile out of the Grouse vista TH. All of the aspects were skiing very well and there was easily another week or more of skiing to be had. I've never approached from the north but have heard, as rootsman said, it is a little easier.
Yeah, I think that the...
Hemispheres is bombed on a daily basis but with mortar shells shot across the valley. It looked like the charges used on Saturday were much larger than normal.

One slight correction is that the party of 4 that left the tracks skier's right of the big cornice actually descended as I was skinning up, right before you guys came up over the rise from your lunch spot. They made some pretty turns.
Thanks, made a minor edit to correct that above. Surprising that our group (or at least me) never saw them going up or down.<...
Ditto, Paresh. Can't wait to get out with you all again soon. The North Cascades are always a favorite, especially in winter. ;D
Nice trip report, Amar.
I'm the driver of the vw campervan.
I want to thank you guys, especially Paresh, for looking out for us and waiting to see that we made it down. Apologies for my partner's postholing the skin track on the way down. His legs were shot, and once the snow got nasty down low, he was worried about his ACLs.
Remarkable that you guys also had a toe lever breakage issue. We found that the voile strap underneath the leve...

I heard today at Baker that the crown on Hemispheres was an induced bomb drop..
Yep! There was a risk of a slide running in to the resort so they used helicopters Saturday morning for the avy control. You could see craters from where the bombs went off in the snow pack too. This is normally not done - Hemisphere's terrain is pure backcountry.
Definitely a day well lived! Thanks for the idea, the company, and the trip report Amar. Great to get out on a tour with Jessie and Elliott too. The North Cascades are always spectacular - especially in their winter-like coat.
Great TR!
I think Kurt, Jeff, Dave and I were just east on the Snoq summit ridge, right when you took the picture of the guys on the cornice. The cornice profile wasn't as steep from our vantage and they were back far enough (but how could they know). We skiied the top of the Crooked just after you, then traversed over to ski Circus Col - what a treat!

I had a similar idea about skiing off the south side of Pyramid. Actually SE side of Pyramid. On my topo map it shows a clearing all the way down to the little creek near where it crosses the road. Obviously you did not see the clearing or my map is mistaken?
thanks.
I think I know exactly what you are referring to. There is a little...
Great day in the mountains with you Tyler, definitely one of the better ones this year. :D
Somewhere between "Anticipation" and "Satisfaction" is "Sweet, Sweet Bliss".
Here's a shot of Tyler about to get some.

I loved reading this. Engrossing prose with a burly physical exertion. A Renaissance man! I'm glad there's someone out there doing some deep thinking while skinning to make up for those of us who focus on sex, food and other basal nonsence to pass the time to get from point A to point B.
Thanks for posting!
Thanks for posting!
Beauty! Way to gut it out! That's a long haul to get up there. Much foreshortening as you're looking up at it from Icicle Road. Well done!
Very good call, indeed. I was hoping to get back out there after great powder the previous weekend but ended up catching up on work. Glad someone got after it. Thanks for the stability report.
Sweet! Lovers Lane looked really filled in a couple weeks ago, and looked like a fun ski. Stoked you guys got it while it was fat!
The bad luck with bindings sucks, but I'm kinda happy to know that I'm not the only one... Glad it didn't result in a bad crash

We did a clockwise Chair Peak circumnav, booting up to Bryant Col and skiing down the breakable crust to Melakwa Lake. Heinous travel both directions in the morning... props to you for setting a skin track back up to the col at the end of a long day :)

Thank you for the ambiguous route title. We've been skiing in that area for over 20 years. Its a good one. Looks like stellar conditions.

Nice effort! Sorry that it didn't work out for you, but I guess you learned a lot.
I'm getting the impression that if there is enough snow for skiing Silver Star, then there is too much snow for driving. Well maybe, like you say, a few days in the spring will work.. I got up there recently before the recent snows and the trails off Grouse vista were actually streams of water.

I'll use the names if I know them. Your contributions, (and there are probably more) Clean Slate and Sweet Sweet Death, are perfectly named.
There is one NE facing chute near the west summit on Barometer that you can see from the hwy - is that named? It is the last line I want to ski on Barometer so personally called it "unfinished business."

Rumor has it it was Bryce Phillips
For a smartphone those are some pretty good shots!
A lot of good northerly aspects there, I was wondering when a good TR from Browder ridge would show up for this area. Looks like great opportunity there in the right conditions.

Bravo!
Nice work and pics! I wish I had chosen your route as it felt like an invasion where I was...too many TRs.
Skiing was great though despite the crowds!

Sounds like Shuksan got a ton of traffic over the weekend, even after the ski area heli-bombing mission kept folks out of the White Salmon valley until 9am or so Saturday (they were dropping shots on the Arm).
Sounds like many different lines skied including another descent of the Hanging Glacier Headwall and a a first descent somewhere else.
Pics and vid on blog, if you're into that kind of thing . . .

envious, next time Eric, Chuck and all.
Nice tour Ryan. I feel I have been running a parallel emotional track. My track however had a weird curve on Thursday when I suddenly realized that the mourning for me needs to be replaced with cherished memories. It is time for me now. I need to replace my ambivalence with action, there are people that talk about doing and then there are people that actually do. I have felt myself drifting too much into the first category this last year. But you more than any...
Thanks again for the comments on the pics.
