Sorry to hear you guys got weathered out.  We got super lucky with a brief weather window with the cloud deck about 200 vf below the end of the business.  We had a good full glass of luck yesterday.

The line we skied was just lookers right of the obvious "hourglass" choke line far lookers left on that face.  As I was trying to hit the ramp, I skied over to the top of that hourglass line.  It was quite the roller and I couldn't see down far enough to tell you if it was a...
My friends and I were looking at that line last weekend but got socked in on the way up. glad to hear it goes, how was the choke?
I love that dusk patrol objective.  It has been a couple of years since I hit it.  Sounds like tough conditions.  Sounds like you hit the one thing you can usually count on, irritated significant others!  Classic line!

Reminds me that I did come back from that dusk patrol to something worse than an angry spoise;a busted out car window and missing gear - requiring a call to said irritated spouse to come fetch me a new set of car keys.  Fortunately this...
First time skiing in the area...
Wow :D

It was nice out there. Bummer to come back to the big city.

Very enjoyable day, good conditions and company.

BTW -- if anybody finds a Scarpa "F1" shim on the lower part of the road -- I offer a six pack of beer of choice or other beverage as a reward
Great tr, I laughed most of the way through!

what time of day did you descend?
Fun video - could you tip your head up a bit higher?
sounds sketchy and reckless. glad you guys are safe and had a good "adventure". might not get lucky like that again.....
Folks in the Alpy BC reported easy shears too. Central cliffs at Alpy were sluffing all day.  Snow beneath the new is wet; tops of moguls were blue and soggy by the end of the day.  Light precip through the day, staying frozen or nearly-so at the base until 4pm.
Looks great. If I wasn't solo I would have done the same trip you did.

Thats a nice mini-crown in your first picture...
There was talk of the Crooked but given conditions (flat light and top heavy snowpack), the built in contrast of the Slot's dual walls and reduced square footage (in terms of potential snow entrainment) made more sense.

As for skin track, I skipped the lower booting rigamarole (just trended further N. of the waterfall) and skinned all the way. Worked well (+faster).

must have been nice in the afternoon with all the fat flakes falling...

Nice report--been there done that (from Illumination Rock down thru the Canyon & trees to hwy).  Load of fun.
It's the ol' 95% rule, as Tremper would call it-  95% of the time it's fine, even in dangerous conditions; like playing slots at a casino and winning with each pull of the handle, but when you lose, the casino security cronies rush you, throw a sheet over your head, drag you outside, and proceed to (asphyxiate) the hell out of you...

Glad everyone is ok.
Will you take $500 for it?
Never occurred to you guys to turn around when you heard "whomphing" under each step? Kinda surprising nothing slid with all those red flags. Then again I wasn't out there touring with you so my opinion is of little use, and you made it out alright, and got some turns while I was busy working and dreaming of riding pow. Good job getting after it. Glad to hear everyone is okay.
...excellent TR, thx...good luck on the toe nail adventure to come...
so where did you go up? i toured up the phantom in the late afternoon following a skin track, but never saw it tracks down. And I would agree, very reactive snow.
Nice, vid!  Good tunes, makes me wonder why the hell I worked all week.  Not exactly Eddie Money, but it's cool...
A quick heads up, yesterday I managed generate a point release or two on the way up, on some of the steeper slopes, not much of a problem, but it would be more worrisome with more snow.  It was fairly firm this morning.

I was really impressed with the distance you guys skied down the road,

Pretty sure I heard some chuckling over my shoulder as I made my way to the next patch of snow.  ;)
I thought I recognized your dog from the pictures of when you and chainsaw willie (or was it flowing alpy?) went out to the Stemilt. We were happy with what we found too, what a great surprise!
Must have been you guys I saw when leaving the lot. I was with my dog Zeke. Bowl 4 and Outback were great.
the upper slopes of Mastiff
Awesome.  Will be getting me some Mt. Hood this weekend.
Nice write up and a nice day!  We met you guys on the road on the way out, our group had originally planned to ski the same thing, but ended up going out via Prusik Pass and down Aasgard.  I was really impressed with the distance you guys skied down the road, snow be damned!
I’ll have to get back over and hit that coulier, looks fun…
Today was a little different with 2-3" of new spring snow. The base hadn't frozen solid but it was firm

Now when I gaze at the Brothers as I wash the dishes at home, I’ll no longer say, “ I wonder what it’d be like to ski that thing?”     8) 8) 8)

I've wondered the same thing--I look at the brothers everyday during my morning run.  I'll ski it with you if you wanna try again.  What a cool trip.
Nice turns and good coverage  in a favorite spot !  Too bad they don't open the  road as soon as it's  plowed .
I have ridden in there with bike and trailer.
Cooking over open fires now! Let me guess... aged hickory for that savory yet zest full smokey flavor... or most likely slide alder for that traditional hardwood season.
You are taking this apre parking lot BBQ thing to a whole new level!
Love the cook sticks too :)

Did you do anything to get your pooch to tolerate the "doggles"?

Not really, it was our first try, so I was just crossing my fingers.  The goal was to have him wear them on the way up, and I'd take them off for him for the descents.  In reality, when we were doing any moving he didn't like having them on.  He would knock them up his head as so...
Yeah, it is a long haul along gentle forest roads, which although very easy waste time and energy before you get to where you want to be. And then on the return they are too gently to ski down requiring almost as much effort to get back down as going up, especially when the snow is soft. In wnter with the snow remaining firmer the return through the forest roads may be more amenable but you will still have the long approach.

Skinny XC skis could be used to improve the approach but i d...
Fantastic report. Thanks so much for sharing. Sorry about your ski but what amazing McGyver work.
Did you do anything to get your pooch to tolerate the "doggles"?
My mutt -- even in really bright sun -- works hard to dislodge them and knocks them off pretty quickly.
There was alot of debris from previous slides. They looked like large avy's too. So all in all, I'd say a pretty decent amount of activity. While skinning, often times the downhill ski would slide off the track and sometimes would propagate, but nothing ever ran more than a few inches.
That looks like a fun area.  Love the dog-gogs.
Way to get after it - that sounds like quite a haul, especially after Mt. McLoughlin and hotel hell!  Awesome pictures of the lake, and from the day previous on McLoughlin.  Mt Scott seems like a tough one - I tried it a couple years ago, waiting until June for the road to melt out (just barely), but by then the mosquito swarms were so intense that they drove us away.
Hmm, looks like you're right... we seem to have missed our right turn. Too many couloirs on that south face, hard to count over from the summit and figure out which one you're supposed to drop in to. The alliteration isn't really there for "southeast route corn harvest", but the turns remain fantastic. Guess I've still got Ulrich's and Cascadian left on the tic list.
Thanks for the report. Glad you had a safe, fun trip. Any other objective snow analysis after the observed "whumpfing"? It may be "spring" but there is still a deep and reacting snow pack out there!

OK, here goes

nice move on the splint.  Smart choice
HA! I just posted our trip a second ago!
Great work, that's a haul!  I tried it a couple years ago but bailed in the heat about halfway up stuart.  Based on you map it looks like you may have skied down the southeast route, not the Cascadian.  The Cascadian doesn't dump you that close to turnpike creek drainage.
Guess that was the place to be Sat. Great weather! Those of us with late afternoon birthday commitments had to stay local. But a few were wishing they were on Rainier.
Awesome -- I love trips like this.
