A fair number of skiers had obviously skied the chute on Saturday, but it was soft enough that the tracks posed no issues. A small wet sluff also cleared most of the tracks the afternoon before.
I was wondering what it would be like after we finished with it on Saturday!
We had four in our group, and another two had come down before us.
The snow was quite heavy...
Fun meeting you guys in the Hyak parking lot afterwards!
Some details for those who may be drawn across the Sound:
Saturday Animal, Scott, Les, Cigdem and I headed up to ski on the Great Basin, the big snowfield on the E face of the Brothers, and hopefully summit the North Brother, which is less climbed than the higher S peak and infrequently skied. We figured 2 days would give us a better chance at being on the Basin before wet slides started.

We skied Stu yesterday too, leaving the summit just before you got there, apparently. There was another party that camped at Long's the night before, but I think they skied down the S shoulder w/ out reaching the false summit (saw them go by when we were coming out of the top of the Cascadian). There were no tracks in the Cascadian when we were climbing up it. Nice job getting that run in a day from the Beverly turnoff!
We climbed up the Cascadian and skied down Ulrich's yesterday. Was warm and slushy on the descent at 2:30. The road is currently drivable for 5 miles from 29 Pines. Agree there is less snow this year than last, but Ulrich's should stay in shape for a couple more weeks and the Cascadian and S shoulder should go even longer than that. All I had was my cell phone, so not many good pics, but here's what the mountain looked like from Long's Pass yesterday m...
Nice work!
Looks like it was worth riding on a snowmobile mandem style.

I'm just concerned Eric and Scott may have used a tandem bicycle for part of the approach.
Nice one guys! Spring goodness: powder and corn in the same descent!

^^ - whats the big deal about a gas station photo, don't you stop there before you drive anywhere too?
ale - PSA: I believe the correct term for a describing riding with a male pasenger on a 2 seated veichle is "mandem"

Its true, I did rip my rando tights, you have any idea how expensive those things are?
If your wives want sleds you should for sure go buy! easy financing available! You are Americans, you deserve it.
Seriously I got no problems how people approach the destination. I will be the first to admit I am a hypocrite(and an antagonist), Hell I just used a freaking Heli to get into the Selkirks. I do question wether we need to see pictures of peoples sleds at the gas station- in what is mostly...

Nice work boys!
Just ignore Scottb, he is just butt hurt because he tried to skin his little skis all the way in there and ended up ripping his 100% organic rando race tights.

...and that's a perfect example why I don't post here that much anymore. have a nice day y'all.
Ignore it Pete. Hating is so passe. It's like wearing stripes in a plaid world.
Awesome trip Scott and Erik. Especially given the uncertainty of the forecasts all last week.

Yeah, because what the Northwest needs is more gas powered devices delivering us into the backcountry. Go oil companies!

Great write up on the trip Scott. Late april pow in the sun is hard to beat! Here are a few more photos.
Rocking.
I put the protractor that was lying on my desk on the screen over the last photo. Bob-on 50 degrees, not farenheit!.

Skied the Beverly/Bean loop yesterday with Michael and Ariel(dog). Despite an impressive number of cars parked at the road, with a 10:45 start we saw only 1 hiker walking down the road and a couple of skiers on Mary's Peak. Skied off that a little after 4, back at the car at 6. Snow was pretty good up high, lower down it was tracked out enough to resemble a sidecountry route.
Regarding the dog, a mixed bag. She briefly chased a Douglas squirrel, mad...

Cool comparative photos Jeff!! Not quite as good as Amar's and mines ski styles, but still good.
Nice!! can;t wait forsome eye candy.

Nice poem! When I get home tonight I will post some pictures of the Brothers Great Basin Ski!
It was nice "threadin the needle" with everone!

Was out that way last weekend having a look at argo and shooting things at my friends. Less snow on the south side of stuart this year than last year on the same date.

Thanks for all the kind words! Jason your trip reports inspire me to write extensively about adventures in the mountains. As far as the whole first descent thing goes Pat is still just as pumped on having tagged the line, and has gotten Jacob back for always gloating about epic midweek days.
I Finally got around to making an edit from the trip http://vimeo.com/41258955

Great to do some skiing outside of our usual city gatherings with the fun Jessie, Elliot and Kyle. Good times! Nice to run into Manfred again as well.

How far could you drive up the road?
Road is drivable to a mile or so past Beverly Creek camp I heard, and that today there were about a dozen snowmobilers running from there.
How far could you drive up the road?
Thanks
Thanks
I do like your photo, great view onto Stuart. Looks like a plum right now
I enjoyed skiing somewhere non-Volcanic with you Amar. Thank you for documenting, as you often do, with exacting style and excruciating detail, another of your/our trips.
I really hope that some in the community's reaction to this report is not contributing to the fact that you've sort of ceased to post trip reports for the last month. Especially since some of the stuff you've skied is of note on some level, IMHO. And you publish excellent TR's.

Fun day (or half day, or third day, whatever).
Enjoyed skiing with Lisa for the first time, and meeting up with you (Silas) for the first time on purpose!
Elliott & I had a blast.
2 laps on hyak followed by much drinking= The "In Honor of Dave Coleman's Birthday" Tour

It's already been said, but that E.W. is one good looking dude ; )

I don't speak GPS, but I believe I know what/where you are talking about. Thanks for the documentation.
Thanks for the info, definitely helped in our decision-making on Saturday.
Thanks for the tip, Stefan: you solved my quandary). If it didn't freeze last night it surely won't tonight... N
Dang whippersnappers snagging new routes.
Check this trip report from nwhikers.net. There is a close up picture of Mt. Constance. I don't know if it shows your route.

this may be obvious, but thielsen is well worth returning to on a corn day. another one to add to your list is mt. washington. it's not very big compared to most of the other stuff on your list, but it has some really fun skiing in the west bowl or you drop in on the NE side if you want something a little steeper and narrower.
Very awesome. It is moments like these that make me wish we had one of those silly "band playing" emoticons here :D.
CW used to be that after a stroke, you were pretty much hosed on whatever you'd lost w/in a few days. It is great to see that science is discovering the reality of neuroplasticity, meaning that if you work really really hard you can build new neural pathways and re-learn many of those lost abilities. There is nothing like a sunny day in the mountains for inspiration and motivation. Way to go Zap & Jill.
Great TR. I have eyeballed that point myself each time I am back there. Chair Peak rocks!
Zap so great to see you got back after it ! WOW, WOHO you go guy !!!!!!!!!!!
I agree, Mr. Wehrly is the head-turner of the backcountry community. 8)
My friend took the photo just before we got above the tree line, once we hit tree line it clouded over.

Nice!. what elevation were you able to start skinning up instead of hiking up? how long did the trip take?
No one brought an altimeter, but we hit snow probably around 2,700 feet. WE started to skin may be 3,100 feet just before the first clearing if you have been up the Monogram / Lookout Peak trail. We reached the west trending ridgeline where we...

Nice Tiroler hut. That is some fashionable mountain headgear.
I like the hat too! I just purchased it, and was trying it out on this trip. the purpose of the hat is for a climb of Mt Olympus we are planning this summer, but we are going to go all "retro" with canvas tents, and bed roles, knickers etc. So, if anyone has some wool knickers...
