Such a rad area in the Cascades.

Awesome work getting that line in primo conditions.

There was POW out there.
Well........I wouldn't call it friendly but with some extra work it could be epic.

It was whiteout conditions on Friday so all I wanted to do was get out. Made it from Blackcomb to the summit of Whistler 8:15.

Crazy Nordic skiers were the talk of the town.
Sounds like you guys got primo conditions on such an amazing line.

Strong work and great write up Ben.

Wish I could have joined you guys.
Nice job getting that chute at the right moment of the day! In the right conditions it's such a fun line.

I still remember my best run there, while you and Wolfs were working your way over from a few other runs across Bean Basin, though on that particular day our second run was still pretty nice despite deeper meltage...
Fun mountain! We were curious to find out who left the tracks on the Miller side, mystery solved. We found the climber left and up the avi chute to be a straightforward route (in safe conditions). From the bench we hit above goat basin there were a few shenanigans to gain access to upper mountain. We then cruised up the Western peak  (The one you see from Hwy2, I think?) Next, we made a few turns and a traverse and a short climb to gain the ridge to the true summit.  About a 6hr trip from car to...

Nice work!!

Did you happen to see a solo splitboarder :)

We did! Dude was moving - said he'd accidentally woken up at 10 am. When he caught us on the Platform, he was on track to do it in a day. Never saw him board though; he did a lot of downhilling with the board split and skins on.

It doesn't seem like the splitboard-friend...
Nice work!!

Cool trip, that has been high on my list of to-do's for a while. Thanks for the info.
saign that was an awesome video

congrats you guys, that looked like the run of a lifetime!
nice work!  We hit the top a little bit later via the Success Glacier Couloir.  Hope you had a rad ride down.  let's go shred soon.
A snapshot of Nature's slurpy machine.
Most likely that was us.we were down to the bridge by 2 .We stopped for lunch by the flats at the moraine. There was a party of two ahead of us.
You must be the party of 4 (or so) we saw making the approach to the chute while we were still skinning up.  Nicely done.
yep,that would be early
Simple answer.  I left just before 3pm.  I didn't want to miss my date with pulled pork.
Hmm, wonder how I missed you?  TNT and I skinned up 330-415PM behind a gal with her two year old in a backpack and in front of a dad and daughter.  Nice creamy snow, only slightly sticky.
That would be Grant and David, they are heading to ski Denali next month.
Grant is hard to keep up with on the descent even when riding switch which he does a lot of.

Baker last summer:

You're correct.  Despite it's historic reputation as "extreme", Ulrichs is just a really great ski run with little objective hazard under most conditions.  There is one spot you have to leave the couloir.  About half way down there's a waterfall/cliff, which I think is where the rappel station is in the summer.  It's right below the main "elbow".  You can traverse to any of the slots to skier's right to avoid the cliff, without having to skin up or hi...
Great job guys
Glad to see everything worked out so well
Nice video!

Quick question: The route seems like pretty straightforward fall line skiing. Is there anywhere along the route that you have to zig instead of zag to avoid cliffing out?
Nice!  I can't wait until I get to do the same with my girl.

West is another great spot to take kids for canned ski/mountain photo shoots. This one is from last spring.  Never could get her to stop playing with her feet long enough to actually look at the camera...
Nice TR.  What a great day to be in the mountains.  I took my 7 month old on his first tour that day as well.  Same spot, same awesome experience.  Skiing with your kids is the best.
Yeah, we skied it a little late.  Earlier would have been a bit better, all around.
Best TR of the year -- gush on!
nice slide show Charlie!

glad to see Franklin found good trip and company
Nice TR.  Four of us just did this ski two weekends ago, but from the south and had excellent power conditions.  It is nice to see your trip report  The mostly melted tracks in your photos at the top are probably our are ski tracks.  I have attached a few photos from our trip a few weeks ago to share.

Thansk!

Hi Troy,

Glad you are back safe and had a great time up there.  I guess crossing the creek can be difficult, we've crossed earlier in a wider section where it was shallower, but then the other side was brushier.  It's a great option to camp up there and explore the upper neighborhood.  Thanks for "skipacking" inspiration!
I often ski by myself and have to  tell my on going story of "the best powder day ever!" to my often disbelieving wife and kids.  Thank you  for sharing what looked like an Epic run. I can feel it strongly in the pictures - and wish I was there. Glad you had the light and the camera and skills to document it so well.
So based on the light in the vid it looked like you did the descent at around 5PM or so? Did that work out as far as the snow and the sun angle that slope gets, or did you think it could've been better snow (less cooked) if you had been there a few hours earlier?
Gush on brother. This is great stuff and what it's all about!

See, the problem w/ planning trips w/ just guys is that *Easter did not even cross our minds*.  So, no Easter egg hunt in the snow, no chocolate bunnies, no Easter bonnets not even a snow-bunny to commemorate the occasion.  Sad, just sad :(

Agreed, skied on Easter too and didn't think twice about it until mentioning the tour to a couple of folks who were so...

One did, one didn't. Though both bunnies made the complete traverse, one never came home.

Lots of other chocolate, Easter eggs (no anaphylaxis! woohoo!), gummies, juju fish, Symphony bars, etc. powered the party.
Super fun trip; one I'd never really planned to do. So glad we did! It's really good.

Big thank-you to Susan and Franklin for a cup-filling trip to the alpine.

High points:

  • The company.

  • Seeing Fitzsimmons Creek basin open up below Pattison

  • Skinning across, then skiing the Platform Glacier (thanks for the indulgence, S & F!)

  • Skiing late-day corn on the Macbeth

  • Watching sunset, sunrise,...

Only by the standards of Tuckerman [ahem, no apostrophe or "s"] Ravine (or perhaps Muir on a nice day, or the SW Chutes immediately after the road opens all the way, etc).
More fun for the expats:  http://skinsanity.wordpress.com/2013/03/10/prost/  ski traverse of the Presidentials.
RANT:  Locks tied in to horns should just be outlawed.

Got that rant over with.  Glad to have missed the wake-up call.

On your recommendation, I'll try skiers left next time.  One can always skate...

You can read my lengthy report on the vimeo page if you like. I tried to write a short one but got carried away like Ben...
Did the Easter bunnies survive the trip?  As one who most always has chocolate on hand (8oz Nutella last wk-end) I'm not sure I've ever seen chocolate in any form, let alone any chocolate fauna, make it through.

Awesome pics!
Fast trip!
Thoughts:

Fishscales rule.  I only skinned up once (to climb out of the Toutle R. drainage.)
Despite the awful look of the N side (See the volcano cam on TAY in Weather Links) I had my skis on more often than not.

Key to this whole thing is finding the best route down into and out of the S fork Toutle R. and being able to skate/ double pole/ glide the entire E and SE sides when the snow is hard.

We must give credit to the sleds for packing the roads on the S...
Sick! congrats on the summit. I'm excited to see the gopro footage, it should be pretty epic!
Way to time is just right Jim!  Nice looking turns for sure.  Looking forward to catching up soon.  Ben
Great write up Ben! It was an awesome first attempt and summit! I don't think we could have hoped for better conditions.

I just got my phone back, and have a few pics up until sunrise in the finger where I lost it.

Silas, too bad we missed you. DC and I did an evening lap at the mighty Hyak after working our tans on the lifts for a few hours yesterday.
Awesome write-up and beautiful pics...  The jealous-o-meter (jheh-LOSS-o-meeter? J-lo-SAW-mitter?) is running high!
