So cool that Wolf is still alive and interested to hear the results, and to think about he did the race himself at about the age many of us are now, on equipment he would have considered modern at the time, like the equipment we consider modern now.

Usually you can go out in most conditions ( even high danger ) and do whatever you want without any consequences at all. A friend of mind is fond of saying "Did you make the right decision or did you get away with it?". You ignored a bunch of red flags and didn't get away with it, but I've done far worse many times.
For decision-making in avalanche terrain...
Awesome event. Jamie told me how great the lodge is. Sounds like a good place to take my family. I hope this race is held again next year. I missed it this year, but I'd love to be part of it.
Glad you're okay, thanks for the TR. Two thoughts:
The NWAC forecast is a broad, general tool - it's not meant to be applied to slope-scale decisions (e.g. the Fly is near treeline = moderate).
Pits are great indicators of what's going on in that immediate vicinity (i.e., within 4-5 feet), but are kind of like the opposite of the NWAC forecast - they're not very good predictors of stability even 10 feet away when the terrain is complex. ...

The night before I had looked over NWAC and the forecast for 'near treeline' (which is what I would consider the couloir, pls comment if you disagree?) was moderate.
I think that is such a great question with the new format to the forecast. I have been trying to interpret it from the perspective of wind exposure and anchoring potential and not...
I, too, am very appreciative of you sharing this experience.
I am wondering what your guess of the slope angle at the crown would be. I do not see it in the write up, maybe I missed it.
Glad you came out without injury.

Glad you made it out sans gear without injury. Easy to buy gear, money won't buy your health.
Far left in the first pic is lovers lane, then zipper and fly. I don't know that offshoot climbers right is named. I've been in the zipper before when a west wind wrapped around the mountain and came billowing up the couloir. Don't think those walls a

Bummer to hear that Seth was hurt Fri night. I was working that night and we were quite busy w/ city league injuries but I didn't see Seth. Heal up quick Seth!
Lowell, Brandon and Seth would certainly be a tough team to beat!
Great shot of Brandon crossing Mirror Lake Lowell.

Bummer. I was wondering about the "twoguys" caption in Silas' picture. Great work on the part of all the participants, though.

I am not a backcountry expert or snow expert, but I have skied an extremely large amount of powder miles. After a lifetime of west coast skiing, I have been lucky enough to have had a seasons pass at Whistler for the last 15 years. A combination of in and out of bounds skiing on big terrain has taught me three things: (of course I've broken these rules from time to time)

Skiing across Mirror Lake in beautiful powder snow.
Many of the race participants (and most of the organizers) stayed overnight at Meany after the race. I'm hoping that Nigel will distribute the results when he gets back in town. I came home after the dinner and awards and I don't trust my memory of the finishing order an...
We went to check out this area today (Sunday) and found similarly great conditions. Thanks for all of your info on this area! I was excited to discover a new area to ski and your route descriptions were super helpful navigating the old growth up to the clearcuts.
One of my favorite tours. Let's hope the breakable crusts gets well covered this week.
Thanks for the report. Results?
real nice stuff silas! glad to see the pics.

Nigel gave us a snow-machine tow from Crystal Springs to Dandy Creek -- we then followed the PCT to the powerline swath above Meany Lodge and followed that to Meany. Getting towed by a snow-machine is sort of like water skiing -- but stinkier and colder -- also suprisingly tiring to the steering and balancing muscles -- at least for me.
I'm in for a ski finding expedition :)
Nice pics, same weather pattern as Saturday at Snoqualmie. Nice in the AM, then clouding over /high overcast and more wind in the PM. So trying to figure out your route. Did you start at Meaney with a tow and then skin back to Meaney?
Thanks for sharing your story,
If you do not find your ski until Spring make sure to remove all the screws and check the condition of the core, epoxy/helicoil as appropriate. Made the mistake of not doing that a ways back with a pair of 710 FOs and the binding pulled out the next season.

And more: (Stampede Pass to Snoqualmie Pass 18 miles, Stampede to Chinook Pass 51 miles!)
Thanks for sharing the story melger. A lot of us have been there (me included) and appreciate the willingness to share the thought process behind the accident. You are (as I was) pretty fortunate to have had the experience and come away able to question your knowledge without major recovery time. It's a tough chunk of pride to swallow, for sure - thanks again for writing it up here.
Thanks for sharing and I am glad you are OK. I have donated a ski in the name of avy research myself. It sucks but it is a small price to pay.

lucky to be alive: always!
It does take a fair amount of luck.
Wow, I'm very glad you guys made it out without injury or worse. I'm also glad I advised my buddy against climbing The Zipper yesterday. Sorry about your gear!
Glad everyone is OK! Bummer about your gear. Thanks for having the courage to post about a mistake of the type that many of us have probably made.
FWIW, those trees at the right margin of your 1st photo provide a much safer route to the top of Lane from behind...

thanks for posting Trevor! appreciate the poetic license
I wanted to take advantage of the last of the high pressure and Friday worked well. After retrieving an errant phone at alpy I stopped by the Chair/Snow Lake parking lot but wasn't feeling it. I really just wanted to take a look up the Commonwealth since I hadn't been there at all this season. Headed up shortly before 10am. Passed some skiers, Dan And Shannon, w...

Hi David,
Great to see a posting from you, was wondering what it was like up there. Thanks!
It was our first choice until we saw other reports of wind effect through the passes. Sounds like you still found some protected stuff.

We were up there today, too... phenomenal snow quality, but watch out for your sluffs! One of our group went for a ride after being taken out by his.
This is fun terrain! We ended up skiing 2 lines on a N aspect into the middle basin.

Delicious weather in Portland this weekend! I'm holed up in a N Portland hotel, helping my daughter ready for midterms. It was sunny all day in Bremerton when I drove down yesterday. Wish I brought my skis for those study breaks...

I know its not a t. r. I' ve seen few reports around the Tahoe area before, over the seasons. And I just give a general conditions report when noteworthy. Especially round springtime cuz its perfect. I've even seen a Mt Rose b/c report before. * which is why I reside in this area. I will give a real trip report when I'm at Mt Lassen, over the summer months - trying to do a t-a-y. - Thanks, bro
Beautiful vid & soundtrack, thanks Carl! 'Bundys' is one of my favorite powder runs, but it's no longer as fine as a couple days ago.
Took a short spin this afternoon up to the base of Pan & down Edith Basin. Telemetry remains broken, but there must have been tremendous E winds the past two days before the most recent 2-4" of freshies. Exposed areas like the base of Pan, Edith and Bundys are about half smooth powder and half sharp-crested 2-3' snow...

Thanks for pointing us in the right direction! We went back the next day and the wind had done some damage, but still lots of good snow around.
