Forest has a way of picking the perfect adventures given the time, season, conditions etc…
Kind of like those people who are really good at picking the right sort of ice cream to go with a specific meal, or cheese with wine.

Good work, guys. Clark is long ways in this time of year. Franklin would have loved it.

You need a permit for overnight camping. Parking allowed only at Narada & Paradise.

So, if you obtain an overnight camping permit, but for whatever reason you decide to come after 5PM but prior to 9AM, have you broken the rules? Hmm...
camping permits are free... you get them at Longmire...and the paperwork only takes about 5 minutes. (climbing permits cost money though)
Last I heard, car camping isn't officially allowed in the parking lot (though I think the boy scouts regularly do large group campouts that are only a stones throw from the parking lot).

Nicely done and a perfect way to honor Frank's legacy!
There is definitely good skiing out there eh?

Do they let you sleep in your vehicle? (I have a VW Camper.) That might be the solution to the gate problem - drive up in the evening before 5:00 pm, sleep in the van, get up early...
What exactly is the 'turtle'? is that the aspect just east of Van Trump where one might slide right back into Nisqually?
Index was amazing on Saturday. T-shirts and bone dry rock! :D
On a more somber note there was serious (but not fatal) accident on the north side of Baker Saturday near the Hogsback. A long uncontrolled slide on ice was what I heard.

The saying of the day was "I bet Index is really nice right now...". Still, it was a nice day out for some exercise at least.
Squamish was really nice on Saturday. :D
The rock was warm in the sun, climbing was comfortable in long sleeves as was belaying but it was a bit crowded. The only downside was the sun setting at 445.
Looks like fun. Minor editorial note, Goat isn't within the boundaries of NCNP.
Was up there this weekend and every parking spot was filled. Cars were still driving up at 3pm, folks were having fun sledding and snowshoeing and the NPS was using labor hours in the form of one NPS worker to inform each and every car that went up that they had to be back down before 5pm.
In my pent up frustrations I did ask when this policy was going to end and the nice NPS gal said, "maybe not till late April. We'd like to stay open according to sunlight but w...

Amar - I admit the skiing was quite decent, very nice corn the last two days I skied on the southerly type aspects. However, I am not going to rave about it since this is the time of the year when we should be ghost skiing, hat skiing or at least here in the Northwest getting the occasional face shot and building a decent snowpack for our water inventory.

It was a terrific day to ski up there on Friday. I am glad I ran into you and the others. Thanks again for the car shuttle from the bridge.
We made it up to about 9k feet on Saturday after bailing on Shuksan via WS the night before. Turned around due to time (we slept in...oops). Good styrafoam snow above the usual bench where everyone camps and skinning wasn't terrible with the ski pons on. Found a few pockets of wind deposit on the upper Coleman which made for about 5 nice turns; the rest of the descent was on some pretty amazing shine pow.

Looks and sounds great, thanks for the report, our fingers are crossed that we might get a flake or two of snow (in central WA), at this point, an inch would be a powder day!
:)! A few other parties have skied West Mac -- couldn't dig up the cascadeclimbers TR (Tony Bentley et al.?) in a minute or two.
Great choice for this weather.

Well done Loren and Juya! And very nice report!
Excellent Forest! Petite traversee atlantique pour taquiner le nord-ouest sauvage!
Nice one, Forest. It sure is spectacular on top of West Mac.
Way to go Forest ! Yeah, the relief exposure on W Mac is something to behold ;-)
you sure are getting after it Amar, love it !

An exceptionally nice day with exceptionally good snow conditions, a pleasant surprise to find the snow surface already well-consolidated on all aspects and mostly smooth corn on steeper southerly aspects just 2 days after the major storm cycle ended. What a way to get Juneuary really rolling!

Leavin’ Kitsap County on Hood Canal Bridge,
Onto the Olympic Peninsula.
Skiin’ the inversion with a friend of mine-
Could we ever feel much cooler ?
Comin’ into Port Angeles
Fog so thick I thought that I’d freeze;
Don’t check for chains if you please,
Mister Ranger Man.
Climbin’ up on Mount Angeles
One boot is on snow, one on screes
Why on earth did we bring skis,
Mister Runcle Man?

The north side looked pretty rough. We decided not to ski it as it looked crusty, icy, windblown and frankly more trouble than we thought it would be worth. I think you could find some turns on the west side of the bowl but they would be hard won.
Saw my buddy Alex booting across from Second Top and he said he thought it was not worth it for turns as well.

Well now that looks like the place to be!
Hey… I hope the hear a report on that one! N facing looks like it at least has snow ;D
Nicely done. Great pictures and write up.
I think anything south facing and getting a lot of solar radiation are the only viable options right now..nisqually chutes. In the case of Heliotrope ridge (not an expert at weather and such), but we thought that maybe the warm air currently in the area is slowly melting the snow during the day and then freezing during the evening. Especially on north facing slopes. Repeating this process everyday creating essentially a sheet of ice with nothing to grab an edge on. Just a...
That sounds rough. I wonder how the south side would be. Maybe ok as long as you ski down when its corn vs an ice sheet?
Wow, great effort. Sounds like rough conditions. Hope we get at least a smattering of new snow before the race.
Flickr hides their URLs pretty well, for sure. I should probably add a Flickr-specific section to the photo instructions.

Thanks Lowell, we relied heavily on your previous report(s) for preparation.
Nigel and I were both in awe of the old-timers once we hit the 5-hour mark and realized how much farther there was to go.
Sorry about the links to Flickr, it's a hassle to get the URL but I think I have all of them corrected now.

Now that's a BC skiing photo. Thanks - way to get it! Updated cover shot, Marcus?
Strong work guys. Especially with splitboards.
Narrow skis make a big difference when traversing hard snow. Brandon and I were on 65mm-underfoot skis. With ski crampons you can be pretty comfortable on skis that narrow. Still, having whippets, an ice axe, or even boot crampons is a good idea on the Silver Peak trail right now.

What is the current process for overnight parking? Are you supposed to obtain some sort of pass? Is anybody up there doing rounds after 5?

The person working the front desk at the Longmire Inn has the gate code, so I don't think its possible for anyone to get locked-in on the uphill side.
I think the Longmire Inn desk clerk goes off-duty at 11 pm. After that, one might need to call 911 or start knocking on doors in the Longmire residental area. :-[
I enjoyed the story too. "used to be a free-skier" :)
Cool write-up on your blog, man. Nice photos of your Hood tour, too.
