Definitey, Brain!  I ended up bootin up while SP skinned with crampons.  The chute skied very similar to when we skied it a few weeks ago.  Exit was slightly better though :)
Looking good Jason! Surprised people boot packed that hard surface. This only validates I gotta get crampons for my Karakorams.
You can actually make out the bench that the Battle Abbey Hut sits on in the back of the last photo. So many mountains so little time.
Retrying a disappearing post:
Katoolah Microspikes were awesome.
Thanks for the timely post!  It validated my plan for today, which did not suck!
Thanks for enchanting enticement!  We missed you today on our tour. :(
The last picture is worth the minor frostbite ;)

I was crying a little driving through in the blue bird skies on monday knowing that it was so good up high!

I'm crying a little right now!
Way to take advantage of the easterlies.
*slow clap*

...well done, sir!

*heads to the basement to see if snowlerblades fit in a sea kayak*
Love your TR's Kristina!!! what a wonderful icy playground we have all over the Cascades right now...decent snow to be found with rewards of moderate to steep ice climbing.

This TR has me wondering one thing, what would Brian Boitano do?
slept in ftw
Yeah, Adam. Thanks for the Beta!

Anyone been up there more recently? How's the road these days? Closed yet... or?

I happened to have my rock skis with me

I love it!  "Seize the TAY"
I mean, doesn't everyone bring skis on a kayaking trip?
Here's hoping your future November turns don't rely on such a rare opporTAYnity.... ::)

Your lack of words or content, is enthralling. Leaves much to the imagination  ;D

For the record; This trip was on Monday the 10. The trail was ice covered, but no problem with careful foot placement. Skiing was wind packed carve-able conditions with the arrant ice patch, to keep things fun and interesting.
As already noted it was a good day on the hill - a couple pics to contribute: the gang up at Muir and the sunset after the hike out.
I believe this is AndyMartin and his group skiing under the sunbeams that day - full res photo is here: http://1drv.ms/1BjgbNV
I claim no authority to educate... so please take this post only as a polite suggestion.

Here's my personal opinion on this zone, illustrated with a photo from the glorious corn daze of last January (sorry, my only recent photo only had a partial view of the chute).

Most folks enter the line from the top (solid red), then disperse into the body of the chute and ski mostly within the dotted red perimeter.
If I were comfortable enough with the conditions to...

I wish that I would have seen you guys up at the top. Had I of, I would have surely communicated to drop it. Conditions were prime for boot packing, and we could have been to a safety in seconds.
How low in the chute were We?

Appreciate the reply Shred.
You were about 1/3-1/2 up. It sounds like there would have been room, and I had indeed been eyeing the...
WAIT!!  I gotta go get some popcorn.
Regardless of perceived conditions, the climber should choose the route safest for his ascent... which should minimize the chance of being subjected to unforeseen hazards from above... including those which may be human-caused, from skiers less aware or courteous than MattT.

Plenty of space in that thing for two parties if they're positioned correctly. Being in the gut for any prolonged amount of time is questionable, IMHO... and is reasonable cause for frustration of fell...
I'd be grateful if the owners of Muir snowfield would clearly state what are best practices and etiquette.
Hello MattT,
I apologize for being one of your determining factors (for not dropping in) and respect your decision making, as I was one of the bootpackers.
We went up for a second run, knowing full well, that there would be others coming, (We invited a few to join us, after they skied the AA chute), conditions were safe to do so.

Thanks for the sweet shot Bradley!

Notice that only Ben has his headlamp on.  Mine broke.  Luckily the moon was more than bright enough to snowboard down without it.  Other than the fact that it was complete ice, riding Muir under a full moon sans headlamp was super fun!

Felt a bit old and wimpy for bailing at 10 today in the Paradise lot.  Now feeling very smart.
Inversion up to Camp Muir where the winds possibly die down before the normal lapse rate starts occurring and it gets colder with elevation to the summit.  Obviously due to the huge frigid East flow flowing over the cascades which must be somewhere in the region of 8000 ft in height??  I'm sure the soundings would tell the same story.

While the skiing was not that great the cold produced a bright clear day, perfect for taking pictures. The full slideshow is here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/runningclouds/sets/72157648776237027/
Great seeing you guys up there. Snapped this terrible shot of you guys running laps around midnight.

You might have been a bit hasty in your retreat, we took a casual start and brought steel crampons for the water ice so it was all good fun.  We turned around at the top of Heliotrope around 1pm and found the snow to be a lot more fun than we were expecting based on the reflection of the sun and the sounds of the skiers ahead of us.  Score 1 for sleeping in!

The parking lot at Paradise looked like a Saturday at Summit Central but the 250+ like minded skiers did spread out as the day went on.
Great day to be skiing. Snow was great from top to bottom.

next time build a kicker on the uphill side of the bivy ;) j/k amazing photos, sweet trip!
We were watching you from the comfort of the parking lot trying to figure out what was going on up there. Mystery solved! Great photos.

That windlip is money. We had a dead-calm lunch on top of your future trench with 30 mph winds a 100 yards away on Oct. 29.
Incredible shots too!
CookieMonster, 2003 was definitely a difficult year. From what I saw the ice is directly over ground or the old summer snow (on snowfields). It seems all the new October/November snow either washed out, melted or was transformed into the current top layer. This observation is for N aspect between 1600-2000m (5200-6500 ft).
