Confession: I had to Google 'winch cat.' Must be quite a ride standing on the dashboard of a snow cat going downhill.
Hi!
Excited for your trip!! Thanks for the questions!
So.... To ski or not to ski? My standards are pretty low and I don't think I've ever regretted bringing skis on a trip. We didn't carry ski crampons either, so I wouldn't necessarily let that hold you back. However, given the current conditions, I have no doubt that travel would have been significantly faster on foot! :-)

Awesome trip and beautiful photos! makes me want to go explore this area myself.
looks like it corned up real smooth despite the temp drop in the forecast--or maybe you're just really good at sniffin' it out ;)
Nice, but I was expecting some Skynrd.
It was nice to meet you, Will! Nicely done on your mega day tour! Some nice photos there, too.
Jason Hummel or I will most likely post a TR on our Painted Traverse adventure, with photos and a short video.

Way to get after it, Poppy!! Us old geezers are gonna have a hard time keeping up with you in a few years ;)
Excellent trip. Love the photos and descriptions.
Were you not able to roll-start the battery-dead subie? The finger-written note on the window makes for great foreshadowing... very ironic. Or is there a trailhead crook afoot, draining batteries and leaving consolation beers and mysterious notes??
Thanks for the TR.

Impressive! Props on nailing that in prime conditions. We were foiled a couple weeks ago by intermittent clouds that kept the snow real firm from the summit down to about 5500' right before the trail heads into the woods.
Wow, that's quite a day! Thanks for sharing your gps and amazing photos!
You are hereby awarded 1st place in this year's Dirtfest. ;)

Nope, on reflection, it's not me. I'm sure
Jake, that was me, skipping a climbing day at Vertical World!
I am hoping to visit the Enchantments some time soon for sight-seeing and to experience the place -- probably camping for two nights. Given the current conditions, would you suggest traveling by skis or on foot? We don't have ski crampons and were thinking winter boots with yak tracks. I'd like to pull a sled... Thanks for the advice! Great report.
The Outback comments were of interest. We also bought an Outback 2 months ago at Chapins and it is the same color. Ymmm. I was reading about jumper boxes 2 days ago for our campervan, just in case. Not for the Subaru.

Spectacular photos! What a trip!
Another great Goat adventure by Chapins! (Last one here)
Sure to inspire more Goat Rock trips with jumper-boxes. Chris is the best jumper-box, however.

Adventure? Check. Awesome photos? Check. Birthday? Check.
Awesome.
It's a toss-up whether this TR might inspire more Goat Rocks trips or jumper-box purchases....

Motivated by your racing spirit... skinned to the top of chair 2 on Tuesday, February 17th (ski crampons required the whole way). Rock hard boiler plate, rocks, bushes and small trees. Only soft snow was the top 2/3 of Edelweiss Bowl in the sun and facing ESE. I was racing against the tower maintenance guy who was greasing the wheels of chair 2. He said it was good karma to bring winter to the northwest... This year! Hope he's right!!!
That chute is a piece of cake for Poppy after last summer's ski ;)

Too funny, nothing like some serious boiler plate to dampen even the most determined skies fun, thanks for the post.
Today offered no improvement, just a soft ride down Edelwiess to the base.
Even if the snow was not perfect, your tracks are, nice work.
I reckon from the distinguishing features, that the dot in the 3rd picture is me!
Thanks for the report Dan, amazing what a little high sirrus can do to what would otherwise be a great corn harvest!
Thanks everyone! :-) Gotta love 3 day weekends!
Big classic traverse in February carrying climbing gear! Pulled off a winter ascent of Prusik Peak and did it all without epic-ing or getting jacked. Very nicely done.
We were able to drive up the road all the way to continuous snow, which starts near a big debris pile ~ .2 mi past the Tomyhoi trailhead. Some of that lower snow is melting out fast, and the road will probably be patchy next week. Skinning to the lookout was a cake and only took a few hours. Larrabee still has a solid snowpack, although we didn't ski any lower than the uptrack. Looked like you could keep going down to the valley but we weren't sure which ways might cliff out.
You can drive all the way up the road until the locked gate at the Eldorado trailhead (mile 20). The road is completely snow free until about .5 mile from the Cascade Pass TH.
For some reason, I was having trouble adding more photos yesterday, but here's a link to the album. Let me know if it doesn't work. :-) And here's a pic of Dragontail.
BTW, I heard Poppy skied the Chutes over the weekend! That girl is a champ! :-)

Colfax was fun but the ski out was even better! Any more info to offer on Larrabee conditions? How far can you drive the road? How is coverage holding up? Thanks
Nice work! How far were you able to drive on Cascade River Road?
Phil, that's the direction Canada has gone with their training, as I understand it: divide recreational and career professional training.
Speaking of Canada, Rusty, yes that is indeed Peter holding the column upside down in the photo & video.

Yea... Judging by the spray patterns from your tracks, you had much warmer snow. The chunks from your turns were frozen pretty hard all day. I think we would have had much improved (softened) snow if it weren't for the high clouds obscuring the sun for most of the afternoon.
Thanks again for sharing your trip info in so timely a manner ;D

Nice to read the report after Eric told us of your trip.

thanks for taking photos Eric! and good to meet you John.
The chutes felt a bit like International (Alpental) last Sunday... a record day for traffic? And how many ten year olds have skied the chutes? Great conditions... gotta take advantage when you can.
Didn't see the cat but wish we had!

International is down, Nisquall(it)y Chutes are up! Here's Poppy going down:
It was great to meet you guys up there! Sorry we forgot to tell you where we cached the whiskey for your board out..!
Easton skiied wonderfully... we dropped the Roman Wall at 2PM - looked firm but skiied great. Little challenging in parts of the middle mountain with small pockets of packed pow mixed in with decent corn, but the 1-1.5k skiied like a dream. HERO corn!
We carried to the meadows, but were able to trail ski down enough so we only had to walk 1000' out. The snow coverage down low was better last Ju...

Interesting to hear about your conditions.
The climbers we talked to said Saturday was cloudy with snowfall. During our ascent and descent, the snow didn't really feel like corn--more like edgeable styrofoam with a little new snow on top. You can see Ross kicking some of it around in my pictures.
I think there was more sun effect on Sunday than I realized at the time. So when the temperatures dropped and the wind picked up Sunday night, everything set up hard and fast....

Nice work. I almost went there on 2/16 but went for Eldo instead. Next time..., probably soon. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Charlie! I remember that you and Susan did a cool trip out there a couple of years ago!
