Thanks for the report and nice pictures guys. Trying to do that this spring but really don't want to hit it icy. Still waiting...Looks like a storm is coming - so after that a few days...
That's Cheakamus Glacier, ringed by Mt. Davidson. Mt. Carr and Castle Towers Mountain.

The backcountry pass is confusing, but you can ask them to put all possible options on so you can take the lifts that open first.
And thanks for TR!

When I skied it a few weeks back, I thought the coverage was fine. Certainly no worse than in August when we rode it. The roman wall was even corn, you just had to skirt around the big crack (it went to right or left). I guess it's pretty bad coverage compared to most years, I'm just not such an old-timer as you, Drew ;-)
Keep getting that corn harvest!

A few more pics showing good snow around treeline
We summited baker on Sunday March 01 via Easton and the coverage was fine (of course this was my 1st time so I have no reference!). The conditions for riding were manky for the most part given the filtered sun and cooler temps didn't allow any softening of the lumpy crust. There was 1 section of decent low angle blown in snow between 8000-7000ft on the East side on Easton (a small valley below some ice sliffs) but that was it although the railroad grade was sheltered and thus al...
Nice photos! Route looks good.
I followed that link and saw they have a shoulder strap mount for smaller cameras that may work for my mirrorless camera. Does anyone have any experience with that strap?

:) That's funny because I was going to finish my previous post with "And of course there are the crazy ones who carry a tripod!" :)
Very impressive nonetheless, I like dedicated people! Good luck shooting and looking forward to more awesome photos.

thanks for the report - that is a cool area. if only the Middle Fork approach route were as straight as those hillmap path-lines! i'm sure the stats are not truly representative of the effort, and imagine the approach is particularly fun this year.
Here is a mountaineering report from Sunday March 2. Crossing the lake was not a problem for these guys. They have good pictures showing the current conditions.

Thank you for all the info!
With no new snow in the forecast, I think we will just wait for things to warm up a little bit - but hopefully not so much that the lake melts!

Runningclouds: Never had an issue with the camera moving around. It just hangs in the holster with the lens pointing to the ground. I don't think the camera has ever fallen out of the holster either. While quite simple, the system is pretty effective. I climbed N face of Buckner with my camera hanging on my hip, using two ice axes, carrying pickets etc.
I carry DSLR, lenses, filters, tripod...I get extra conditioning with my camera for sure ;)

Yep. Didn't hit skiable snow until 5360'.
Not sure which direction you're coming from, but Adams looked mighty good from afar. Don't know about the road access, though.

Charlie - Are you saying that you had to hike quite a distance from the car just to get to snow line? Is it worthwhile? Was thinking of shooting up there this weekend. If the weather is nice, midas well go ski up high...
Fun Day! I had done two runs before I met you guys the folks I was skiing with had two leave early. No way I had to keep skiing. Always a great time skiing with you, Randy and both times I had decent snow, actually some powder.

I am using a system by Cotton Carrier. I have this type: http://buy.cottoncarrier.com/cotton-carry-lite-p/514rtl-s.htm
Radka, thanks for the info, I did not know these holsters existed. One question that sprung to my mind right away is does not the camera move around as you are turning when skiing down?
I carry a small camera and it works fine most of th...
Radka, I totally agree with WillderDude regarding snow conditions. I skied Blackcomb backcountry on Sunday and it was bad, we skied two lines and went home, it just was not worth it. I'd wait for new snow or rising temperatures to make corn.
Some people will call a taxi from the Rubble Creek trailhead (or before they reach it). One thing to make sure is that you have a reception, if you can choose Telus network they have the best coverage in the area. Bell and Rogers should work...

Wow, beautiful spider/formidable photo. And ouch, poor Tacoma!
radka and Kenji, thanks for the feedback on cameras and carriers. I use a Lowepro Toploader Zoom 50 for my DSLR. It's bulky and awkward but I don't want to fish my camera out of my backpack every time I want to take a picture. I think a smaller camera is in my future.

Crossed the lake from Sentinel Bay to Battleship Islands on Sunday 3/2 and it was totally fine.
Completed the Garibaldi Neve 3/1- 3/2 and snow conditions were terrible the entire time: all aspects and elevations were wind and sun hammered. I wouldn't waste your time in that area until they get some serious snow, unless you like skiing on ice.

We, too, have an interest in this area. Apart from info on whether the lake can be crossed safely, we would also welcome any beta on Garibaldi climbing conditions. Any forums out there we should look at?
In addition, we would be curious about some logistical options for doing the Garibaldi-Neve traverse with one car. Rent a second car in Vancouver/Squamish? Taxi cab in Squamish (does it exist)?
Thanks!

I assume you carry a DSLR because of the image quality. Or maybe a new-fangled mirror-less?
I'm a weight-weenie and have switched to a mirroless several years ago. Just got a Fuji XT1 last Fall when they kitted w/ 18-135mm, and liking it a lot.
Jim, "breakable powder" is just right to describe most of what we had, with varying stiffness...

I clip the holster to my hip belt on my backpack. It's not ideal but so far I have not found a better solution - I am definitely open to suggestions as new things may have shown up on the market since I bought it. I do not like that my camera is exposed and unprotected. If I am worried that I may fall (snow, 3rd classs rock, talus etc.) or if it...

Ditto on the nice scene-setting pics!
Sounds like you guys may have had some breakable powder? I've skied a bit of that this season!

Ha Ha...did have mental lapse and originally posted to Lift Accessed skiing.
I must say I was impressed and surprised at the courtesy of the ranger driving through the Longmire parking lot at 8:30AM and stopping by each group of people waiting at their cars to tell them he would be opening the gate in a couple minutes. Really totally unexpected. That ranger has my personal thanks for getting us up the hill 25 minutes ahead of schedule.

Nailed sugar bowl today. Just barely...Trip report to come. Big storm came in light and fluffy with not much sticking power.
You are welcome. If you go please post info, there is quite a bit demand for the "can the lake be crossed" info this year.
Hi Radka, are you using some kind of holster for your DSLR? I am intrigued by the set up, it seems a bit risky but it does away with zipping and unzipping the camera. Is it a commercial or handmade product? Thanks!
I can see how the gate is a problem in morning - since I'm already mentally hamstring by then at a lift served ski area....but what I'm curious about was what was the lift ride up like? I could go for that....
Beautiful writing as always Ethan.

Whoa are you saying the ranger opened the gate just for you and then closed it again? The rest of us had to wait for 9am.
Sorry I'm confused about which day I was there....I had to wait until 9am on Saturday. I wasn't there on on Sunday...doh. Maybe I should just delete my nonsense.

That's not what my party experienced on Sunday. We drove through at 8:45am.

Hah! Radka has at least twice the number of ski days as me, that's where the discrepancy lies. Also, there were only about 30 turns that were the best. The rest were all pretty bad!

I saw your car parked by the gate as we left from the Eldorado TH Saturday night, I was wondering where that went. Thanks for sharing!
ouch on the approach for the trail. Glacier basin is a cool place.
Beautiful pics, as always. I assume you carry a DSLR because of the image quality. Or maybe a new-fangled mirror-less? I'm getting weary of packing the lbs of glass on my DSLR and am looking for alternatives. Just curious.

Peels, that is very hard to say. On February 21 so...
Nice job fighting the burn. That is a special place.
aha ;D For some reason I was thinking he had his own blog, Muchisimas Gracias!
Glad you enjoyed it! There's something special about finishing up a ski trip hiking through the woods. Here's Will's report: http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=33715.0
Really curious to read the report by Will Thomas... could you provide a link?
Strong work fellas!
Great write up and photos. Liked the last one in the forest especially. I've felt that way before, yet with the glow of an amazing trip lasting for weeks afterward. ;D

Non-skiers in our party had vastly more efficient travel, but skiing's still fun.
crazy
Cool trip! I was looking over that-a-way on our recent trip to Glacier Peak and thinking I need to go there soon!
I've been there many times. All those peaks are very cool! Thanks for the TR and pics.
