Shit happens, people need to realize that accidents like this are normal in any system. It's sad, but unavoidable. The last thing we need are more licenses for things like bc skiing, Andrew's analogy of hunter safety classes is horrible. I bet more skiers with avalanche education die each year than these "gapers" you guys are running down.
SAR personnel are mostly volunteers and nobody is making them go into these dangerous situations, they WANT to do this type of work.
Our culture treats death like it is something avoidable, some of us go earlier than others, the best we can do is enjoy our time here for as long as we can.

This!

There is nothing needed, nothing to do, no one to train or reach with some kind of campaign. The SAR geeks love to voluntarily do this stuff, so risk to them is a non-issue from any kind of moral standpoint.

How has the entire country addressed hunting safety?
......

Will a rational approach like a license happen?

Can anyone name a licensing system that is intended solely to protect an individual from his own mistakes, as opposed to protecting other people from the individual's mistakes, or protecting a resource (like fisheries) from the actions of individuals? I can't think of any off hand, but heck this is my lunch break and I need to get back to work.

On the other hand, I kind of like the idea of being able to say, "Of course I bagged my peak. I've got a license for it!"   ;)

I like being able to bag my peak and have no one even know.

If you're getting rad, but no one sees you getting rad, are you really getting rad?
