I think the signs are outstanding and really couldn't be much better.  Or, more to the point, any improvement in the signage would not result in an improvement in statistics.  Overwhelmingly I believe the go vs. no-go decision is made by people when they leave the house, not when they review the signs and conditions at the TH, and is unfortunately not often enough reevaluated on course.

You are correct about the signs. The intent, the donation of time, the donation of money to create these signs are all great measures of people who care for others well being and should be commended for their efforts!
Maybe my earlier point was not my best prose...
When I first heard about the incident of 13 people being buried the image of the picture on the sign is what I saw in my mind... People traveling to close together in a line in avalanche terrain.
So very Sorry that it had the results it did...
Also, applaud the searchers...that was some tough conditions to have to expose yourself to help others!

what if there was also a dry erase type board that backcountry skiers could write their own observations on at the trail head?

experienced skiers could use the suggestions to find the best aspects, and less experienced users could get more information on specific spots they may be planning on heading to.

. One system that I think is really slick is the tsunami warning system that the coast has where a text is sent to all cell phones pinged by certain towers. If certified people could volunteer for such a system that notified those in the proximity of an incident, I think that would be a really slick way of helping out.

This is an interesting concept for BC'ers

Thanks Andy, I can't imagine a more effective sign. That seems to cover it.

Just wanted to make folks aware that the following sign is posted at both trailheads (Granite/Pratt and PCT-N Commonwealth), which each group walked pasts Saturday.  Appreciate all the suggestions for more signage and wouldn't want to discourage further dicussions.  Just wanted to let you know what is currently in place.  We've found the Ranger district (North Bend) extremely helpful in allowing us to put signs and beacon station in place, with some reservation toward over billboarding a wilderness area.  I'll check back on this thread for additional suggestions to improve the signage.  We (Cascade Backcountry Ski Patrol) currently has a permit for placing signs at these trailheads and would love to see them improve awareness and safe travel decision making.

Thanks for the signage; we all need to do what we can do to try to keep people informed.
