It was my first time skiing in September and first time in Washington. Glad to hear that these are not normal conditions. I still had fun!
Interesting side bar to that statistic - he started that astounding record at the ripe old age of 34.  There's hope for me yet!
Seems like it would be easier/more fun to ski the Bruneau Dunes  skiing the dunes
Wow.  That's so hard to watch...and yet so hard to turn away.
I love the spots where he seems to check his watch.  What's he thinking?  "How much longer can I rattle my brain inside my skull without stopping?  Will I get off this heinous dirt ice gnar track in time to make it home to catch 'Golden Girls'?"
Good on ya for making it happen.  Going biking now.
Ah, that thin line between passion and obsession!
Tom is a legend. I met him on Rainier and wrote an article about him that Powder published last year. He certainly is a humble guy who just wants to ski.

Stay young, ski powder (or I guess blue ice this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere).
I'm with Jake, great picture, hot turn.  Thanks, looks like a great day.
EXCELLENT PHOTOS AS USUAL...THANKS
WOOWhooo...FANTASTIC...thanks for all the beta (and looking forward to any additional).  Gotta get down there...
Thanks for taking the time to put together this great report, it sounds like a great trip, it is now on my day dream list, thanks.
My money's on number 2. Great to see those crevasses looking n a s t y.
Its crazy how the snow pack can change in a week. I went to Camp Muir yesterday and the day's hiking and skinning were beautiful but the ride down fairly nasty. Also there are some crevasses opening with holes that would be unpleasant to fall into on the Muir snowfield. I've never seen that before. The hazards are easy to navigate with visibility but will be hidden in a whiteout or with a foot plus of fresh. It worth noting cause I think most people consider the Muir snowfield free of...
That's fine with me David.
^already threw that one up on the Lhasa TGR topic :)
Nice!  If you haven't already... Make sure you share your ski pic with Splat!!!
Great video brother. I love the sound track. I make vids too and love to have sound tracks that are unexpected, and not heavy bass rap. That Lady G song version was perfect.

Best part though is you blowing by the upward climbers as they stare. I remember my first experience with that in 1984 when we passed all the climbers and GP as they looked on and wondered.

Much has changed since then but the looks have not........and are priceless.

BTW - posted in on my our...
Nice going you guys, glad to hear the summer bananas ski great,  I was looking for that reagal pic of Mox!
This week's weather should give a nice refresh to the snow!
Wow, what a difference a few too sunny days make.  The Muir snowfield skiing on Wednesday was smooth and no meltwater.  Just goes to show that in September it is imperative to grab the fresh snow as soon as you can after it falls!  Maybe more the next three days?
Fun running into you Silas. Enthusiasts is a good term for us.

Here's a few photos from the day.

Thanks for the great video, you are on a worthy adventure with your young son, and what great luck to have a little fresh  in September for the worst snow year in years, hope this is a harbinger of the year ahead!
Freebird,

I also love the time-lapse of the clouds! I teach weather at EvCC, mind if I show my students that sequence?

Cheers, David
Yew!

Ah, sunny pow is so much more special after descending onto gloomy fingers of trodden schmoo.
Merk it was shot with my Sony nex-5t...About 20min of vid sped up 10000%
Awesome!! Thanks for the stoke
Absolutely green with envy, nice going!
You are killing me! What fun! And nice vid as well.
Nice vid!  Curious of what you shot the time lapse with?  GoPro?  How long was that clip in real time?
Thanks a bunch Kamtron, it was apparently out earlier!
mattd, the webcam is working and showing snow right now: http://www.skimountaineer.com/MtnWebCams/Rainier-MtnWebCams.html?size=med&telemetry=true
Hey Charles, its good to see something from you. This year has been incredibly bad.

If you're ever interested in doing some three pin touring let me know, I have gotten back into skiing again and lack partners for those sorts of trips. I especially miss our ski-biking.

Anyone know if higher elevations on Rainier have gotten much snow? Weather service seems to think so, but I think the Muir Camp webcam is out.

Matt
Cragieburn ooks like a lot of fun when when their is ample fresh...I'm guessing Mt. Hutt is getting blasted too?!

It's epic right now!!!

This looks better than my last ski, coming from the PNW.  Thanks for the report!
Thanks Drew, excited to see and hear about your upcoming adventures.
Thanks for tr....looks pretty good...looking for to updates and pics!
It's funny. I've skied that little patch on the flett when it looked like that...200 foot long patch of snow...with ice all around...but that was in September. The middle Russell looks like one could ski almost 200 vert. It doesn't look horribly suncupped...hmmm.

Hmmm, what do they do to machine the snow?  Run a compactor down it?  Those ridges look like toboggan runs...or is that what corduroy looks like close up and personal?

During the dry winter they groomed that pattern in an attempt to retain more snow.

such a brutal snow situation.  That machined snow looks unskiable.  Nice white snow above though.  Thanks for the report.
Thanks for the pictures. It brings back memories of June and August in years gone bye.  ;)
