just play me techno and tell me i'm pretty.

looks freaking awesome!
Mike, you shine at everything you do in the mountains - but I bet it's hard to beat that one.  Congrats.  We had a brilliant day today as "The kids and the Dads" - my stepdaughter Annie (14) and her Dad, John, and my son, Jack (7).  When we found the road to Artist Point gated at Heather Meadows, and the cloud ceiling just above the parking lot with showers, we headed up Twin Lakes Road To Bear Mt., just east of the lakes, for Annie's third BC day and Jack'...
Wow, congrats on your persistence with Silver.  Sorry it was not the busy celebration of bigger snow years gone by.  Thanks for the report.
Thanks for the updates looks way better than i thought. Looked at the clouds and went back to my 5x8 cell. (guest bath remodel)

Way to get it!  Brings back timeless memories from both routes.  Were you able to drive all the way to Brewer Creek TH, and were you walking for a good while? I like it up there too.

Brewer Creek road is clear to TH.  We were able to pick our way through the trees on our ski descent a few 100 yards away from TH.

Pilgrimage to the mecca of spring touring. Rain and strong winds, a foot of fresh powder, and blue sky. Skied NE Face on Lassen and Hotlum Wintun on Shasta. Coverage is excellent. Nice soak at Stewart Hot Springs. "I like it up here".

Nice chatting with you Don!  Thanks for the track.  We went to about 7500' on the Paradise Glacier where the rest of my posse finally agreed that the 4-6" of unconsolidated fresh snow might sluff on the steeper slopes we hoped to ski.  We headed back to our Solstice picnic spot a few hundred vertical feet above Sluskin's Chair, and enjoyed much better conditions, 1/2" corn with no new snow, in Mazama Bowl.  Fortunately no rain all day, and sunny from 10-12, and again from 4-7...

thanks, Vogtski, for explaining that!

My pleasure.  For any who might be interested, here's the route of the abandoned section of the original road to Paradise, with waypoints at the 'Crossings'.  I was just guestimating on the topo, but it's quite clear on the enlarged satellite photo :

Though I've skied at Rainer for a couple decades - I have to admit I don't know the reference of Third Crossing or Fourth Crossing -- little help?

4th Crossing (as explained by Vogtski) is also a major summer trailhead as well as a winter one; there is a full parking lot at 4th Xing and stone steps up the hill  to a trail, and in the summer, a map...

The "crossings" were the bridges where the original road to Paradise crossed the Paradise River.  The first crossing was (is) the spur to the comfort station and equipment sheds at Narada Falls.  The 2nd crossing was in the woods just above Narada and the 3rd was just below the modern Reflection lake / Stevens Canyon Road bridge.  The marked winter trail above Narada uses bits of th...

How far from Paradise did you have to get before there was continuous snow to put the skis/skins on?  Webcam from the parking lot shows lots of brown.

From my experience and from what I saw others doing, people were not skinning until reaching Pebble Creek.  Before that, there would be several sections of having to ski carry, unless there were routes I...
Great day out, especially for those of us that got up early  ;D 8)

They're talking about spots on the Paradise Loop Road. I actually don't know if the 'crossings' refer to the creeks or trails that cross the road.

A few buddies and I started heading up Muir but decided to ski down Paradise too,  I think I saw your tracks,  We hit the snow a little later in the day and the refreeze created awesome skiing.   The surface was indeed smooth and looks like skinning from 4th crossing was easier then from Paradise.  We skied a few more aspects of things around there and found the real goods.   Gotta love new snow :)
One of my favorite places on the planet.
I enjoy our TR and photos plus seeing "Zap's Peak" with snow.. Your new born is getting the skiing "gene pool". Your double rainbow photo reminds Jill and me of having the same experience at Naches Peak years ago.  ;)

That is so great. Way to rock at fatherhood. And way to bring another rad lady into the backcountry community.
Excellent news.

Also... did you take a time machine to get to your tour?
:) :) :)

I wish I had a Dad like Mike...well done, you'll both get great dividends latter.

Cool animation of the gps track. Looks like you had fresh snow, and great coverage. Nice trip!

Thanks Mike.

I use a Sunnto GPS watch and their "movescount app" which makes the GPS movie automatically. A friend had it on one of our trips so I had to get one.  I have the Sunnto Traverse which is a bit less complicated then the Sunnto Pea...

Thanks for the report - cool video.  How bad is the washout 1.5 mile before the TH? Passable with 2WD?

I also think the two-nighter is more enjoyable.

Thanks!

The washout is significant. At the end of my video it is actually included (after the music attribution - last 30 seconds). It is much worse than it looks in the video. You can get over...

Ah, good to see someone else getting after it in Iceland. So much potential, and such a nice place to be at that time of year. I'm so glad you guys had a good trip. The photos of skiing with fjords in the background are making me a bit nostalgic.

The rangerette at the Nisqually booth told us the Paradise Valley Road was open, but 'twas not.
Checking out the Tatoosh from Paradise was helpful.  The summit of Foss has stunning views.
BTW both Lisa and I are RETIRING   8)  You two are role models.

High camp on the Hyas/Daniel Glacier divide:

I love it this time of year when you can ski in all directions.  Nice camp. Nice trip. Thanks for the great report!

Very well said. The objective is a great experience with a daughter, lessons learned and a memory that lasts a lifetime. Million dollar smiles!

inspiring, thanks :)
Great report!  Good for her for recovering from what must have been a big scare.  Super impressive that she got out there and had a great time.  Love the pic of the bear in the sleeping bag.  My daughter is 3 and I hope to model your ability to keep the objective from taking over the sense of fun.  At the end of the day as long as they have a great time they will want to keep coming back.
Nice tracks! Looks like the glacier lived up to its name in the sun.
Yep, great Dad & Daughter trip, sounds like. Great job to the both of you.
That's awesome. Good job dad. It can be hard to remember with kids sometimes the objective is not the objective.
Sad and scary to think about the slide before the drop. RIP to the unfortunate soul at the waterfall.
Wow.  Here's to adventure.  If John Muir and Henry David Thoreau were 21st century skiers, well...Thanks for such inspiration.
Met you up there just below the Whitman Crest; it surely was a nice day.  I am adding two more pictures...
