Yes, enough turns to not have to lower the threshold for a countable ski trip. We could see what must have been your turns - it looked like you found reasonable snow along some additional western edges.

Here's a photo of the Muir snowfield (or what's left of it) from just below Pebble Creek (edge of Gibraltar Rock at far left skyline, Anvil Rock left center skyline, Pebble Creek area right center edge of photo):

Hey Charles, turns they were, beautiful they were not! Let's hope for some strong low pressure systems this Sept-Oct to get us off to a good start for the fall/winter.

Paul
For the same distance on dry trail you could hit the Squak on Baker. It really isn't that bad. Either way september turns are september turns. And any turns have to be good, right?
Graeat report of a great ski trip, but nothing this ancient woman would want to do.  I'll wait for powder, sending up vibes for an early winter.
Yeah, earning them is RIGHT. Any other time of year, and 8 miles of hiking would yield alot more that 1000' of vert!

Hope to see you this winter...Greg
Greg, sounds like you had a nice day on Saturday.  Even though "we" Sunday skiers had the fog, it turned out to be a good ski.  If we stood still long enough, the fog lifted, and as soon as the camera's lifted, the fog would roll back in again, kind of like a game of tag.  All in all, we earned our turns for September.   ;D
Ah-h-h-h! Another excellent September ski, sorry I missed the turns and the damp looking tailgate party. Looks like you guys made the best of the conditions. Hey! and that's some kinda Marmot there JW!  8)

Paul
"They" say desperate people do desperate things, and in our desperation to continue our yearly streak, we did earn our turns, and find some very skiable snow for September.   ;D

Looking forward to doing more of those fun "tailgate" parties  8)
Sorry I couldn't join y'all for some turns. Glad that you were still able to get in a decent run despite the weather.
Once the first freshies cover up the bumps on the snowfield count me in for a trip to Rainier.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the new snow is only about 4-6 weeks away.
Yeah, pbelitz, you should have.  It would have been fun to put a face to another fellow skier/poster.
Jerry, nice report and way cool shot of the "trail guard".
Yeah, the trip went off pretty much as planned, except for the errant minty hunk of love (Sumo) and the clouds not lifting.
I had "ordered up" sunbreaks for the climb and ski down and the showers for the drive home.  The showers for the drive home were spot on but the sunbreaks were a little lacking.  What we...
Argh, I knew I should have tried to find a ride. Sounds like you guys had fun. I figured Rainy-er would be socked in, I couldn't see anything from Seattle. Oh well, I've still got three weeks to get those turns in.  :)
Thanks for the great report Silas.
We'll reciprocate.
So for anyone that's interested, the pics and map and invite and times are all up now on Planned Trips at:

For the September Ski and Tailgate Party.  Come one come all  8).

Cool, Greg.
So far it looks lik you'll have the better weather, although you never know what it will be like au above Pan until you get there.
If you get a chance how about a short tr for us after you get back??
What do you mean, not spectacular? Those boots are worth a standing ovation!  ;D Fun trip. Let's go try it again.  8)
Nothing spectacular, but some pictures here...

Ciao!
Sorry. Lara Pazemenas, Greg Lange and Dave Metallo are all headed to Paradise Gl. on Saturday. We'll miss the weenie roast, but hopefully not the turns...Greg
So, lessee, for the TAY 1st Annual September Paradise Glacier Ski and Tailgate BBQ Party we've got Paul S, Jerry W, MadDog, Strider, TAY Charles and... Is that it?
That's hardly enough to open a new package of hot dogs for the barbie.
Anyone else coming to this sure to be memorable and fun event?
Hey Paul, no sarcasm in this post, ;D we just know it's not the "stash" this weekend, we are still trying to figure out the biggest "bang for the buck" so to speak   ;)  either way you might wanna bring the sneakers for the hike in.  Maybe we can borrow those PF flyers from Markharf since they are so light and fast.
If this web page was so enabled, and had a knife, I could cut the sarcasm with it, and everyone could have a slice!  ;D Or? ;)
Yeah, right, I'll email ya, Paul.
I'm up for a ski this Sunday. Off tomorrow for a little trot outta Diablo Dam up Sourdough Trail to Elephant Butte for a good gander at some nice country. Should return by Saturday just as the weather goes South. ??? Will it be the stash for Sept turns?  Or?

Paul
I'm in for the ski and tailgate  ;D
Charles is back.
Contest terminated.
Didn't seem like we were having that much fun with this one anyhoo.  sag was the only guesser and he got the info.  My work here is done  ;)

Getting together a ski for Sunday (hoping the forecast improves).  Let us know if you'd like to join us and have some company for your Sept. turns.  Details via return email.  Apre' tailgate party weather permitting  8).
Good point, sag.
It's about time I came forth with the goods, huh?
I'll get the info off to you in the next day or so.  I think you'll like it for a fun "secret stash".

Greg - I've accessed the PG 3 different ways.  We're proly going up to there this weekend as well.  I'll include you on a group email... maybe we'll post it on "planned trips" as well; maybe we can turn it into kind of a "community event"  :D.
so what is the "official mandatory suggested stashworthiness protocol" and my addy is stefan.giles@ comcast.net
I'll take Sky's recommendation and do it as a winter tour during a high pressure window.

BTW, a photo, which will possibly show our tracks (depending on the resolution) will be posted by Sky later this week when I burn him a CD.
Heck, we've got to get on the Park again this year!  If we get up a bit earlier, with the knowledge of this past trip, maybe we can make it to the summit, or at least to the headwall schrund. There's so much corn to be harvested! ;D
David Thanks,

Actually the descent that I was suggesting would start at the point that is ~6900ft., which essentially forms the southwest wall of the Portals (the saddle marked on the USGS maps that is one notch over from the camping areas), and from that point to descend to possibly as far down as just below the toe of the Rainbow.  On my map, this would approach 3,000 vertical ft. on terrain that looks on the map to have nice rolls and contour lines that are maybe not radical, but...
Hey Mark - Yes, viewing the lower portions of the Park from a distance it looks feasible, but once up there it didn't appear that heading left was an option so we went up.  In fact, there was no guarantee of a connection at all, although around 8,500'+/- it may have went left.

The slope you likely saw multiple tracks on was too fun to turn down, while at the same time I think the majority of our group didn't want to press our luck on this trip.
An impressive collection of tracks on the Park Glacier, I must say.  So the line you didn't try involved traversing far to climber's left to access the upper glacier?  It looks like the most likely route, but I think you did pretty well for so late in the season.

I satisfied myself with another brief bit of skiing today before my companion needed to head back to town.  Ptarmigan Ridge still has excellent scenery, multiple short lines and snow that is in places very good—all...
Alan - sounds like you know the area.  Our camp was at the very end of the trail.  Yes, we headed straight for the gap between the Portals (the true Sholes was climber's right).  We at first debated climbing that and accessing the Park where the Sholes, Park and Mazama glaciers merge (our thinking was that the Rainbow may be too crevassed to navigate combined with the potential loss in elevation).  However, traversing the south facing slope between the gap (which I believe yo...
David,

One question that I posted to Random Tracks but haven't gotten an answer to:  Do you approach the Portals by gaining the Sholes glacier early on and then staying on the NW side of the ridge?  Did you stay high and descend the steep area just below the NE point of the Portals or did you pass that gaping crack on the Sholes by passing below it?  Did this question make any sense to you?

Actually, when I hiked to the point that is above the Portals, I noted what a...
No way I sold my soul.  I'm saving it to sell by the end of September, in exchange for seven months of epic powder, followed by a beautiful spring and summer.  I'm doing this for everyone... resort skiers, ski mountaineers, yo-yo skiers, telemarkers, and even snowboarders.  Cheers!
Hey Paul - Sky was scoping the topo, looks like my altimeter could have been off as we likely topped out slightly over 9,000'.
Now, now Paul...this isn't CC Climbers.com so there's no need to point fingers at bc skiers.  We're all in search of that dream ski to one degree or another  ;)

Thanks for deleting the repeat post.
Oh, yeah, Dave, you can remove your previous post by clicking the 'remove' button.
Arrgh, Dave, you beat me to it. The climb was really fun, with great scenery, seracs, and crevasses. It was really too bad that we were cut off, as we were SO close to the upper snowfield that would have made for more great skiing. But, so is life. Sky even sold his soul and turned into a backcountry skier, skiing laps on the snowfield below the seracs. He's turned into a yo-yo skier! Poor summits....:-(

Beware the tourons, next time I'm taking a sign saying "These are NOT ski...
Hey Charles, accidentally hit the back key and posted this trip twice.  Sorry for the inconvenience, if any, it's been a looong day.
Ron: Question unrelated to this "Name That Bowl". When you go into the Paradise Gl. area, how do you access? I'm still planning to go in next w'end, provided there's a reason to.

Thanks...Greg Lange

PS: It's great to be back from Arkansas. The mountains there are all of 600' tall!
I know the one you mean, sag.  Yeah there is some similarities.  I don't know the name of it either but it's the bowl that what we call Pinnacle Chute, Denman Chute and Plummer Chute dump into.
Here's the best shot I could find of what you are talking about:
[Removed extra pic to comply with site policy]

The bowl that you're thinking of is just out of sight on the other side of and below the tree line in this pic.
Here's a shot of a couple of the gang booting up the center chute...
To me this looks alot like the bowl just west of pinnacle peak in the tattoosh range.I'm not able to come up w/ a name for this bowl, there is nothing on the maps i have.
Sorry Laurie, I'll remember for next time. And another TAY session would be a good idea as has been suggested! A September tail gate party after some sun cupped, runneled, I can't wait for new snow, and how long was that hike, ski trip would be a good thing!

Paul
Thanks Ron, I owe it all to drooling over every possible ski route I see during the summer. I hope to put your hard earned, valued info to good use. Mark's suggestion was my 3rd choice (between St Elmos and Burroughs) if the others failed. Good job Mark! Although the gate to White River closes on first snow which does not make this easy.
In fact Governors Ridge is easy to get to when there is more snow on the ground (spring) . Just park and ski/hike West of the 410 and 123 junction. Just SE...
She told me her name was Laurie !
We had good time yall.
Ok, the next one is really cool, it's so remote that the goats love this spot, and the marmots are shouting warning signals to each other as soon as you round the bend. Think about skiing and swimming in the same day, within a few yards of each other.  Didn't see any fish jumping so I don't think you'll need the fly rod.   8)
OTOH, Mark, good guess and good info for us all on the Table Mt. beta.
Looks like you also snuck in under the wire for the beta on this one.  I'll include you on the email distribution.
Woo Hoo!! Give that man a cigar!
(Sorry, Mark, I mean Joedabaker)
Your first guess got it.  In fact I don't know of any routes up the north side of Govenor's ridge that aren't just a straight bushwhack.  Do you know of any trail up the north side?
So if you care to shoot me an email I'll send you and snoslut the maps and the other beta I've accumulated for the "new stash", the suggested best way to access it, and the "official mandatory suggested stashworthiness protocol&...
