You are more than welcome.  It was nice to get out.  It was just depressing to see the snow field so bad.   And of course all the rocks that I hit.
Those are great photos! It looks like you had a beautiful day, and it is nice to see turns in new snow. You should consider sending one of those Halloween shots into telemarktips for their cover page - or better yet, let me use a few of the photos on my "cover page"!
...oh, and I realized that I missed page 4 on section D of the paper, Paul, so I shall rehash later.   Think snow!! ;D

Well, here's the evidence that turns indeed where had on Halloween day up on (?) ??? Muir field somewhere.  Thankfully I have two other pairs of skiis to fall back on this month.  cheers!
Greg several years ago I did the Pinnacle 'Glacier' ??? thing w/ Ron and Mad Dog and with all the laps we did it came to about 1,000 ft. As soon as I got home Charles I put this trip out of my mind and focused on the season in front of us, for the 12 hour turn around from door to door it was long for the couple dozen turns we got! The views of Hood, Adams, Goat Rocks, and St Helens to the south were great and were a good a reward as possible. 8) Lets do a little snow dance and hope this current...
Paul thrives on the pressure  ;D
Hey Paul, this last-day-of-the-month ski seems to be getting to be a habit for you (at least for October)! Don't you worry that your car might break down on the way, you might have a wreck, etc? I always imagine endless scenarios whereby my streak gets broken due to leaving it to the last day.
Right on,Paul! Better turns than not,is what I always say - See my report of October 25, Pinnacle "Glacier"!...Greg Lange
This time of year (i.e. before there is enough snow to ski on) the telemetry snow depth sensors are actually "bush height" sensors. As the disclaimer says, please use common sense when interpreting the data.
Thanks Andy,
We found only 3" up behind Hyak and Mt Catherine. We were hopping for  a little XC tour on roads up there. We left the skis in the car and walked about.
Robie
telemetry is whacked; this a.m. according to the ranger there was 3 inches on the ground; Sat there was unevern coverage of 0-5 inches with most new in the path/trail.  Ice was dirty brown old ice.  >:(
Andy, the telemetry is showing about 12" of snowpack near the parking lot - is this what you saw? Also, was it ice as in refrozen new snow or hard, dirty old snow?

It looks like Paradise has received a few inches of new overnight, so perhaps conditions will be getting better?
That's OK. You made more turns today than anyone I know, except for Ron Cram, the "Official World Record Holder For The Most Consecutive Months Of Skiing" (self-proclaimed). He sent me pix from Palmer on Hood today, and there's less snow there than at Muir.

Keep on turnin'...Greg Lange
TW, welcome!. You are right about the photo - I sent it to telemarktips last week in case they might deem it coverphoto-worthy, and I guess they did.

Portland, eh? Maybe we can start getting some good TR info from your area now (assuming that you are a bc skier)? It would be great to know how the snow is doing on Hood, 3 Sisters, etc, especially in the spring.
Greetings from Sunny Portland!  (Today anyway)  This is my first post, but have been a fan of this page for quite some time.
Isn't that a picture from this trip on the front page of Telemarktips.com?
Thanks, Bruce. Ask Lara about our tribute to you. She's got fotografik evidence to show. Good partners are not easy to find, so we carry you with us even when you can't be there.

I once heard, "The descent is funner than the ascent.", but you've got to find the descendable stuff to make it all worth it.

See you soon....Greg
Hi neighbor.  So, I'm sitting mid-point in a mountain of steel, conrete and glass today and reading your trip report....

You know..... even if  your skies are gouged by lava rocks (but not lost), both poles are bent, most of the trip vertical is completed by sliding on various body parts, mosquitoes draw 4 pints of blood on the way to and from the "stash", you're lost for two days bushwacking because your GPS batteries died - and then another day 'cause you saw a nice s...
Nice save, Greg.
And heavy acolades for getting to six years.
(although sometimes at this time of year I get flashes of feeling like some sort of helpless, pathetic, drug addict  ;) )
Those are fave Tatoosh destinations of mine too.  Skiing "Plummer Chute" down the north side through it's hourglass at the bottom has always been at the top of our spring tour list.  I'm getting juiced just thinking about it!
Come on Snow!!
Yeah, it's something, as opposed to nothing, but not much of a discernable difference. Can't wait to try it when the basin's full of pow and not "ow"...Greg ;)
Hey Greg, glad you guys had such a fun day.  With the left over snow being so pathetic, you guys seemed to make your own lemonade from a bushel of lemons.  Kudos to you for the effort.  Isn't that Pinnacle "Glacier" something  ;D  ;D
I was up there on saturday...expected conditions to be awful considering all the rain and A.Carey's observations from earlier in the week, but man what a pleasant suprise....as Corey said the snowfield was in fine form. The lower snowfield was a patchwork of new snow and old dirty ice but the upper snowfield was just what I was hoping for...fast smooth clean corn snow...couldn't believe that all the cracks on the snowfield were already filled in.
Looking forward to November when I can leave t...
Maybe we'll get more this week.
Cross your fingers and pray for snow!!  ;)
Sounds like some of the new has survived up there; good show, Corey.  Just so you know, I would have loaned you some sunglasses... they might have even been non-perscription!!  8)
Sounds like a great stash, Jonathan.
Thanks for reporting.  Pray for snow.
You're getting pretty close to the bottom of the barrel, Jimmy.
Greg, I'm looking forward to seeing what you gound in those two locations.
???

Hi pbelitz:

Alas, we went back three days ago (the 23rd) and the torrential flooding of the weekend before has washed out the road about 3km from the bottom.  It could take a while to fix although the BC Hydro and Telus will probably want their road back in action so they can drive/snowcat to do maintenance.

Jonathan.
Well, Jimmyclimb, your luck in finding some length of carvable snow was reasonable, given our current weather conditions. A group of friends and I celebrated my 72d month (and Lara Pazemenas' 27th) by attempting the Pinnacle "Glacier", and then making 3 turns numerous times at the summit of Plummer Peak. We traded a long slog for a short turn fest. I'll tell more later, when the photographic evidence shows up!

Great job, doing it on Friday. It must have been some kind of solitud...
Wonder what has happened to that predicted snow accumulation and lower freezing levels  ???  ???

Good thing several of us earned our turns last weekend  8)
Indeed the short term looks very bleak! >:( Even more so when this month's genuflections are not complete. >:(
Great photo, Ron!

It sounds like at least the N. Cascades should get a little snow tomorrow, at decent FLs (6" total in forecast right now, FL 3K)
Woulda been better if I actually had rock boards! 8) Good exercise . Hey my thermometer just dropped below 60 , there may be hope !
It was a tough tour, but we did EARN the few turns that we got.  All in all we were able to keep our streak alive  ;D  8)  All in all it was a pretty good day.

Silas, now that all of the new snow is gone (according to Andy's report), we don't have to be worried about it getting skied out before we return and we can tell the whole truth: the snow was so good on Sunday that we did two runs!

There will be a few photos from this trip on TAY home page beginning Monday, 11/27.

Thanks for the update, Andy. That's quite a change from Sunday - all of the "permanent" snow on the Muir was still covered with new snow then. Now I am really glad I got my skiing done on Sunday!

;D
did some "turns" down some scree slopes above the green river in Canyonlands NP last week but it sounds even better up at Baker... a great trip report to read as always from our Bellingham breathen ..... sure feels warm out there today tho ???
You got to skin from the car! I'm jealous. Nice trip.
I'm jealous. You let us catch all the rain and low visibility! You should have come Sunday. Builds character.  ;) Nice photo.
I paid attention while skinning on Sunday...and I concluded that the tap only sounds if a. you don't know how to skin, or b. when you have to set your skin particularly well. I love the step-in when I have frozen hands and cramping calves.  ;D
No I haven't seen them....  But I bet I've heard them clack-clack-clacking away somewhere.   ;D
Have you seen the Fritschi light?  ;D
Well Dave, you still have time to put the dynafits back on.  ;)

I really want to go this weekend, I bet today's rain is snow, but the forcast really doesn't look wintery enough.

A RAINY AND BLUSTERY PATTERN WILL DEVELOP THURSDAY AND CONTINUE THROUGH SATURDAY...
...RAIN...HEAVY AT TIMES IN THE NORTH CASCADES... SNOW LEVEL 9000 FEET.
...RAIN LIKELY... SNOW LEVEL 10000 FEET...

no need to downsize - they weren't impressive enough!  8)

Paul - as for this weekend, I'm not sure yet...my skis are torn apart for the new bindings I'll be putting on.  i'd have to bum off Sky or Ben who both have 2 sets.
Mark, thanks for the great TR. As usual, it seems, Baker is again the snow champion - early, mid, or late season, this always seems to be the case.

Yo Dave, you're wrong.  The fact is just like the Muir Snowfield gets cracked and nasty in a year like this, the same happened to the snowfields below the cleaver.  I think the cracks were really shallow, glide crack type things, and I think we could have made it to the cleaver proper fine without roping up, but I was already cold, and ruling out a faster pace (I won't explain this.) meant that I could only get colder higher up.  I know I'm selfish, but I'd...
p-

I actually was able to view all of your photos, though (and perhaps this was the issue for Charles), the latter photos took a moment to load; whereas, the first was immediately in view.

Thanks for both of the reports. Paul, when I looked at yours, only the first photo loaded - the rest had broken link icons (I think there's a "\" instead of a "/" in the URLs for those).
that's funny...word is you only made it to the base of the cleaver, and there are no crevasses in that area.  You guys must have been in the main Boulder drainage in order to cross cracks as little elevation as you guys gained  ;D

I have no idea where we were, but on TOPO you can see that you have to cross some ice to get to the cleaver proper. I'm going back to bag that line from the summit this winter. I was feeling stronger than I expected, but continuing unroped would have been dumb, and roping up would have taken too much time, being that cold/wet.

PS, Jeff wants to get out and get miserable again on Sunday. You in?
