How long a drive was that? I'm also in Snoqualmie and usually take FR23 to get there, then 141/Gorge/I-5 etc. to get home because I don't like driving FR23 in the dark completely exhausted. I'm always looking for a better route.
Oh, thanks! I left from Snoqualmie and got Adam at Snoqualmie Pass. We drove down the East side through Yakima and then took the 141 route. We binged on some memorable Mexican food in Bingen. I think that's where the turnoff is.
thanks for the info Joe. looks like the weather will break by Saturday so I'll check it out. hoping to get up to Diamond Peak in the next weeks too.
I don't know what Randal (23) is . . .
He's asking if you drove via FR 23 from Randle, instead of SR 141 from the Columbia Gorge (that's assuming you're from Seattle and not Portland or elsewhere).
... barking crevasse spiders.
did the spiders scare you? while making photos from the bottom of the hole, i heard a familiar cry, "dude, it's sketch down here...!" ;)
hi androolus! i think it was you that i skied a couple runs with at Summit West sometime back in Dec. if not, then hello anyway. i'm glad you ventured onto the Fryingpan. what a great ski huh? camping on the glacier sounds like fun too.
I don't know what Randal (23) is, but we did ski the climbing route down along Suksdorf Ridge (and it didn't suk--couldn't resist!) We first headed for the SW chutes, but after a ski cut released a pretty impressive avalanche, we booted back up and onto the ridge. There was plenty of snow to ski the chutes though, and for traversing back over from the bottom.
Yes, skilarke; the trailhead for the The Twins is on the right side of the Waldo Lake road, maybe two (?) miles from the junction with Hwy 58. The trail head sign was vandalized and is lying on the side of the road about 100 yards south of the actual trailhead; that was where we parked because the road was blocked by snow further up.
I take it the you skied the climbing route, not the SW Chutes? Did you take the back way from Randal (23), if so, how did the snow cover at the bottom of the chutes look?
Thanks....
Thanks....
Hey MW88888888 Dogleg looked tempting but negotiating the waterfall looked sketch that day. All debris'd out plus it being Friday the 13th I didn't want to push my luck. Was there a huge runnel left over, starting from the falls, from a giant glisading down? That was sure a big pile up when Charles and I skinned past. The avi cycle proly occured within the week. Looked really recent. Good job on bagging that gnar line!
nice TR. I'm in Eugene and was wondering how to access The Twins? Is the trailhead up the Waldo Lake road? Thx.
Hey Sno slut - we skied Dogleg Couloir on Saturday - melted butta for sure.
So "Crazy Formations from avis past" - what was your take on the blowdown at the foot of the dogleg chute? When do you think that occurred?

Hey Allyson - glad you like the pics. Sorry to have kept Monika from the Gl travel field trip (well, not really). Did miss not having you along with that great fish eye camera friend, the Kam.
Ultragrrl, you are so right, those overcast days can be very tricky with the filtered sunlight. In past years GT fieldtrips, it has been clear, sunny, and so hot, hot, hot, on the glacier, that all of us have come off of there after a full day looking like boiled lobsters 8). Those would be the "Skip" days ;)
Thanks for the report. So seldom is the road open all the way to Harts Pass by now. We usually head to Mazama for Memorial Day, so may check it out then. Won't be surprised if the good skiing is gone by then.
Hi Mark, our group wasn't the same without you! I did my best impersonation by forgetting to unclip the rope end with my pack and skis from my harness before ascending, though, giving the 6:1 pulley system (not to mention the haulers) a good workout!
Softshell? Are you serious, Scott? I was in full Arc'teryx hardshell top and bottom with a Mt. Hardwear Primaloft coat underneath, and still barely made it through the day!
Yeah, softshell pants, but they are so much more industrial than you standard soft shell pants - but they got soaked nonetheless.
yes, skip. glad you got yourself away from the books and confining office space and out into the open. meanwhile, defeating the weather reports once again (as you seem to have a habit of doing...) ;)
Hey Greg, I saw the photo of you dangling happily in your industrial grade rubber gloves and thought to myself, "That GregL sure is ahead of the curve when it comes to proper attire for climbing in the PNW." I'm actually feeling inspired to go out and buy a pair for myself, just to leave them at the bottom of my ski pack for use when conditions warrant. As they do, surprisingly often.
One thing for sure, we didn't have to worry about sunburn 8)
Not true...I managed to receive quite the nasty sunburn on my hands Saturday. ouch!
And thanks to everyone for making this happen! Despite the wet....it rocked!

Thanks Allyson, and I did feel your and Cinnamon's "cravasse angel" energy with me ;). Sorry I couldn't make it for Sunday; nice work out on the Nisqually in those tough conditions. My shoulder is doing well, but now I have this darn splint from the laceration on my other hand. Learned today from the docs that I should have had stitches (it's too late now) but I hate going to the ER.
But on the positive side, I'm always immensely grateful when they're just superficial injur...

...and i think we'd all agree to hold skip accountable for our lack of luck on weather with this year's class ;D.
With the weather being quite tolerable on Saturday, our practice refresher day, I thought for sure that Skip was lurking somewhere around Paradise proper, but Sunday we knew for sure that Skip had once again avoided the wrath of nature ;D. All joking aside, it was another great class with a fine bunch of people. &nbs...
paul--nice shots! it looks like you guys had an awesome day out there, and really lucked out with the sun. :)
monika--we definitely missed your presence this weekend at rainier! glad you had a good time on saturday though. from the pics, it looks like you're using both poles which hopefully means your shoulder is feeling better?

thanks to all the students who participated in the less than ideal conditions on sunday! kam, you did forget to mention some of the other weather we experienced, i.e. wind, and some occasional fog/white-out conditions ;)...all and all though, i'm glad to have been able to accomplish that trip safely, and not to have had anyone really eaten by a crevasse...and i think we'd all agree to hold skip accountable for our lack of luck on weather with this year's class ;D.
It does offer a lot of opportunity to the taker and if the snowpack is ample you can exit/enter either Crystal Peak (that's where I origionally spied that chute) Trail or Crystal lakes.
Great report and pics! I have wondered about that trip since the days of my first Burgdorfer book in the early 80's. Skin to the top-that's my kind of run! Looked like you made the best out of a thin snowpack!

This was a great class, and despite the near-hypothermic conditions, a memorable trip. Thanks again to the instructors who've seen it all before and were still willing to stand out on the glacier all day in the rain and snow!

I think I found Jimmy Hoffa about 50 or so feet down there along with some barking crevasse spiders. Even saw a short cut to the parking lot from down here! ;D
yeah, thanks, Joe.
I've been lusting for that line for some time.

Thanks for the report on a overlooked area.
there is lots more of ski terrain in and above that drainage than people guess.

Kam - thanks for the great pictures from the crevasse.
I really appreciate the dedication of our excellent instructors (Ronj, Maddog, Tom, Allyson, Amar, Carter, Cinnamon, Kam, Jerry and Ed) to provide great instruction during some interesting weather. Thanks instructor!!!
I'm looking forward to the movie!!

Another weekend in what appeared to be the sweet spot given the forecast :D. Thank you Paul and Mugs for a fun trip exploring together-- Never knew you could skin up Dragontail! Paul, my many thanks again for all your shots. Can I say I like the "styling" one of me with my new bibs? Now the duct tape will match, as I did manage to put a hole in them as well as the one in my hand while we were scrambling those rocks trying to come up Colchuck Col from the back.

Good way to make the most of the one mountain around! ;)
Jeff,
Great trip. 5000 vertical in less than 4 hours makes me tired and envious. :) Zap

Way to get after it Paul. The photos were enjoyable to look at.
Sorry we missed you Kenji. You would have enjoyed it.
Great photos, Paul. It turned out I could have joined you guys, and I should have. Just ended up pulling weeds and watching the Star Trek... We did manage to test drive a Prius.
Nice, makes me wish I lived in the North Cascades.

Great climb and TR. Thanks for sharing the pics Amar and crew. That is a climb you just don't get out of the car in your sneekers and hit.

Nice trip and pictures, Jeff. That was a good work out. By the looks of the weather today and the forecast for tomorrow getting out Thursday and Friday was a good call.
Sorry Paul, wrong answer. Mine are the ones displaying only two turns on the viewer's right.
I'm plenty satisfied now; I just finished two hours of full court hoops and some weights.

Nice job with the tr amar! Pics looked great too. Seems we definitely picked the right day to be up there to reap the nice corn up top. Next time we'll have to do it twice over to satisfy Sky.
Wow, there's a ton of ski porn in this thread! Thanks everyone for the great photos and TR.
I see Sky used a pair of TLT4Pro boots. Interesting.
