I was a passholder that year. What I am implying and sorry if this isn't the place for this and I am not trying to badmouth anyone here, but I don't feel I was treated poorly. Stevens season pass holders got more that year than Crystal pass holders, which was nothing. Was I bummed that Stevens didn't do more for the pass holders, of course I was, but buying a seasons pass is a gamb...
Thanks for the ride back to the blvd you saved us quite some time
Thanks for the locations. I've got to get back up there again. "Beacon/bacon" yada yada,...somebody caught a spelling error...my bad.
I think Nate has it right, that the lot is owned/maintained by Stevens Pass. Of course, he and I may just be perpetuating our own guesses, I suppose, but I'm pretty sure that building is an employee lodge.
Regardless, taking money for the last few spots? That's some opportunistic genius, right there. I'm glad you salvaged some goods from the day though... Were you able to pick out a line straight down to your car, or did you have to do the parkin...

I don't have anything to back this up, so I apologize if I'm way out in left field, but I thought the building there was a Stevens employee lodge? Seems like I occasionally see Stevens employees roaming in and out of it. I would assume then that the whole lot belongs to Stevens in some form or another. I always thought the upper lot was employee parking, as well, although I have noticed a lot of backcountry skiers parking up there, so maybe I made that up. Anyw...

Consider this:
Stevens Pass may likely expand soon. Public pressure should be put on them to develop more parking for resort skiers. And probably this will mean an expensive investment in a parking garage for Stevens. It will take a lot of public pressure, but I would say that any further expansion at Stevens needs to include a comprehensive land use and parking plan.
We found similar conditions where we were at the pass. It was suprisingly good skiing above 4000ft. Both on N and S facing slopes. The sunshine didn't hurt the enjoyment factor either.
Most areas above 4,000ft were wind buffed. Hand pits at both 4,400ft and 5,000ft on NNW facing slopes (~30-35degrees) found 3 distict layers in the top 2-3 feet of snow. The first layer was 4" deep. The second layer was ~12" deeper. The third laye...

Yes, at least we got some great turns in. That made me not so furious. I linked up 3 big powder turns that made the whole day worth it.....parking, traffic, gorilla lifty and my buddy hitch-hiking can take that away.

We were in the other car that was going to meet you guys for the trip. If you thought the parking was bad you should have witnessed breakfast. After seeing that fiasco at Stevens we wound up going into the Jove peak area and getting some great turns.
Glad you were able to do the same.

Joe,
Kudos to you and TAY. It was your report with Colleen's info that led me to contact her and I will definitely get back to her and Gary Ward; wanted to tag a pic to the message though. It will be a sad day when they close it, so for now were are happy to get the days we can there. OBTW, slog is an understatement. It was one of the most tireing days ever, but incredibly rewarding.

The Snow-Park was in great shape. It took some prodding, but I've gotten good responses from the DOT Supervisor there and Colleen Maguire, the Special Assist at the Snow-Parks office.
Colleen emailed me that they were a little slow getting it going down there. We had a meeting with them this summer and they were maybe planning on closing that snopark due to lack...

Wow, I gave up on Stevens after the treatment they gave their 05-06 "season" passholders. These sorts of rumors certainly wont win me back ... and the return traffic on 2 is the final nail in the coffin.
What kind of "treatment" did their pass holders receive?
Thanks Don! A little redemption from the 1st series of pics Dan posted of me! A truly amazing day in the hills!
Wow! Great shot Don! Send more, send more!!!
It was good to meet you guys too!

Yeah Joe, we came up the first gladed "chute" past the creek with the water-fall, which also looks like a fun run, but a little too crazy yesterday. The Snow-Park was in great shape. It took some prodding, but I've gotten good responses from the DOT Supervisor there and Colleen Maguire, the Special Assist at the Snow-Parks office. As usual the road is pretty hairy and there are downed trees that required some work; always an adventure :) !
Exactly my questions. Who plows the lot? Who has the "right" to it? Should back country skiers be given precedence if it is a Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie Forest lot? (That would be the day!) Step aside! Free-heeler commin thru 8)!
Combine the fact that the ski area controls all the lots up there, and that WSDOT wont let you park at the ventilator anymore, and the options for bc skiing parking is severely l,imited up there. they should have to maintain spaces for non-ski area users in the lot across the street from the area (heather ridge) and the upper lot at Yodelin.
Dan, Andy & Chris,
It was great to run into you guys....
Here is one photo to start and more will be on the way when I have time.

These types of "problems" really grab my interest. I wonder if Stevens has a right to that lot. Does it fall into their permit area? Who plows it? If they pay for the plowing, then they should have some rights to it. A vdeo of that guy turning some away and taking cash from others (not to mention pounding on your truck) would have been the perfect weapon in this case.
Well actually one or two of those days were on skinny skis, not board. But, I'm probably even more sore from learning how to ride on those little buggers. It was fun, I might be a convert.
Wow a report from last year ;) It was a zoo everywhere yesterday

From the looks of your skin track it appears that you climbed up the drainage on the SE side of the Fryingpan trail?
Those chutes on the SW side of Tamanos look like they are starting to fill in for your return trip. Nice that they finally plowed the Snopark at the bottom of the access road, did you use it?
Good to see you got out safe.
Joe

Wow, 6 out of the last 7 days on the board! That's pretty good. We will go up there again very soon! Maybe an overnighter...
It was a beautiful morning up there. I thought the snow above 4k was pretty fun still, the tree skiing below that was challenging. In the transition between 4k and higher the snow was kind weird. It was squishing more than compacting. I wondered if there were going to be wet slides later in the day on sun exposed stuff. I ski cut and skied some small 30 degrees plus slopes and all was well in the Kendall area.
Argh! wish I could've been out with you guys - looks like it was amazing. If only I wasn't so sore from riding 6 out of 7 days that I felt like all I could do is catch up on work yesterday.
nice job!
i need to get me a snowmobile.... :)

That was a stablity test Dan. I had to check if snow would fracture off my beard when wind loaded. Turns out it just sluffed right off, no danger there! ;D
Hello,
How far can you drive? Have there been any changes?
Thanks,
John

Wow I haven't seen Stevens that busy in a long time. That's just too many people on the hill. I would definitely write a letter to Stevens Pass. I'd be curious as to their reply.
I'd be down for a Baker trip as well, been too long since I've been up.
It was good to see you too Dan.
You sure did pick a good day. Castle looked like money. Good choice. I'll see you over there next time.

Oooh, so you laid down the tracks we were drooling over! Very nice.
Today was really an amazing day at Paradise. Bright sun, no wind, cold dense wind affected powder with a bit of crust that was very easy to bust through. I love skiing that stuff and making the little chunks fly up. We drove through the gate at a bit before 9:00 so were able to enjoy a longish day up there. It was really tough to leave today. There is just so much snow up there and everything is filled in the way it should be. It's like the olden days that Brenda and I remember when we firs...
even this short report makes me miss the pnw. enjoy that stuff for me silas!! ;)
dang cass, nothing like touch n' go skiing!! do it up in austria!! ;D (and say hi to the frenchies for me too).
Plenty of cheese, and lots of "burgers" but watch out for the free shots of schnapps!
Nice work, Wipe! Say hi to Michael, Corinne, Luca and Florian for me.

Might want to look up "depth hoar". It is not buried surface hoar.
Well, I wasn't sure which it was... I'd have to know a bit more about the crystal structure and go back and look at the telemetry for the time period in question.
Depth hoar forms later right? Like a layer of frost, only at a certain depth? ...
sounds good Chris, i have been waiting for a moderate day at baker a long time now it seems like to tick a bunch of lines off my list.
yeah jcocci, i was thinking after we had such a "lack of style" going down that hill that trying to tele ski snow like that would of been nearly impossible....

bigjoesmith - yes, my buddy did break his binding that day, but he was not the one that leggdragger and lintermans are talking about. he has an old pair of silveretta ?55's - the ones with the 2 carbon fiber rails underfoot. the carbon rails pulled right out of the toe piece. this is only a problem when free-heeled as the rails are held in by the toepiece when locked down. we got him going again thanks to a ski holder strap and some wire ties that were kindly donated...
Snoqualomie ,Switzerland, Austria in one week makes perfect sense to me .
But do they have cheeseburgers there ?

drove in via 99 and then the garibaldi lake rd (on the right just south of daisy lake.)
and yes, the area just below the barrier would not be a good place to be.

Thanks for the TR. On my last trip to Whistler, I noticed the road was plowed a bit. I have normally skied down your ascent route when I've done the Garibaldi- Neve traverse. The area below the Barrier has some wonderful avy terrain.
I was using a beacon. In retrospect, I should have turned it to search right away. However, this particular friend has a tendency to take off in his own direction so when I didn't see him behind me, my first reaction was that he had gone right and when I went left. We were about 50 ft from the PTC, which is where we begin the skin back to the car. We both had been here numerous times and knew the route so I honestly thought he had just found his own way through the trees and was putting his...
