3 of us toured Chair Peak Basin 1-17-08, pretty beautiful tour. We skied east facing terrain, dug a pit on 38 degree slope east facing. Hard rain layer at about 8-10 inches. R block test showed non-consolidated break on 1st jump above the rain layer, 5 + subsequent jumps failed to break any deeper layers. Skiing had some small crust higher with soft pow conditions down b...
I just got news from friends in Innsbruck that they still experience the Föhn. So it does not look too good in Tirol right now, unfortunately.
Glad you've been having fun...hope things are well slut. Catch you later.
You guys rock!! Good memories from this winter break will not soon be forgotten...
Drop me a line if you find yourselves in Tahoe for any reason this winter. Now that there's actually snow here, my backyard is full of possibilities for adventurous shredding!

I don't know what the scale is - I would guess better then 1:50,000 and definitely not 1:100. The garmin mapset works well
looks like a fun trip - how do you like the garmin canadian mapset on the GPS? Is the 1:100,000k series good enough for anything? I have the 24k series for the us parks (which is fantastic), but those candians need better topos!
That looks amazing!!!!!
Nice job kids!

I'm a photoshop guy too, ;D
I thought you may have added some snow to my face and gogs in those 1st pics....I'm on to you Engel....
I'm a photoshop guy too, so I figured you might have used it to "enhance" Chris' riding abilities. It's all about smoke and mirrors, right?!!
;D
;D
Dan,
With PhotoShop I can make anybody look good...accually we all know Chris is good on that splitboard!
I know I am exceding the photo limit but had to be fair and post a shot of Dan. I hope I do not get put in the Turns-all-Year jail for posting to many photos. May be you guys can bail me out if I get locked up!!!

Nice report.
I'm glad we don't typically have to worry too much about depth hoar in WA. During my one trip to CO in the winter in '93 (when I incidentally took a level 1 avy class with a few well known experts including Tremper teaching - good stuff!!), they had something like 3+ feet of depth hoar with just a little over a foot of newer snow on top. It was a ve...
Nice work guys, looks like everyone had a good day out except for me (stuck doing homework). Chris- we gotta get back up to Sahale and get some turns one of these days. Maybe this spring? Will be in touch.
Nice faceplant, l think your beard needed some water- he must've been hungry for some pow too!

All I can say is wow! Joe- I dropped those classes and am skiing all winter, no more homework on beautiful weekends for me! Decided I needed to get my priorities in order- Let's ski!
See you all out there soon.

Hopefully we will get some more good terrain in soon.

Thanks for the pictures you guys, it's nice to have reminders of the wonderful conditions. The snow, sun and company sure came together. ;) I am glad to have learned some new terrain and to have met Holly, Jen, JW, and Ed. I appreciate the opportunity to plod along with the geezers and pick up a thing or two along the way. I hope to do it again soon. Thanks again to JW for the lift up to Paradise for the last run. We made it down to Narada just before dark and enjoyed some of the ni...
That's a great shot of Rainier. You can see a line up The Fuhrer Finger that looks sweet.
Don is tha MAN, Dan! Don't be hatting because I got hella tight steeze!
Don, you sure are making Chris look pretty good. What kind of deal have you guys worked out? ;D

Hi all - great to have Cass here for a few days for some skiing in my new backyard...you are all more than welcome to do the same ;-)! Kam - we'll come check out the Virginia backyard at some point ;-)
Paul posted more pictures here.

some friend you are. switz --- sssshmitz. sheesh.
Greg - Thanks for the Schnapps warning :) . Michael passed on the story of your Schnapps experience from last year...

Lift skied at St. Anton today (western Austria); fairly icy beneath chopped up freeze-thaw snow on most slopes, but still found some powder on shaded aspects and good snow coverage up high. Heading for France later this week...apparently the last storm hit southern Switzerland/France pretty good (~70 cm new snow).
Not necessarily the report I would like to hear! Hopping on a plane tomorrow for Munich, after which I'm supposed to meet up with the fiance and the rest of the US telemark ski team in the Czech. They are supposed to race tomorrow in Slovenia but apparently there is literally no snow...to the point where the organizers are trucking some in. They did report good conditions in France though...
So my question is, once the racing is over, where shou...

Thanks for the links TS. I'm now going to call it surface hoar buried in the snowpack. Very interesting how they definitively say surface hoar is the culprit in avalanche accidents in maritime climates.
Way a beautiful day...I was working so I couldn't venture around and had to stay with-in stevens pass proper...great photos!
got my computer and telemarktips account working again.
I took this photo last Sunday 1/13. There's a significant pillow formed near that slide.

Thanks Randy,
Glad it turned out to be a bluebird day above the fog for your trip. It is good to get some idea for later in the week. Sorry to steal M+P away from you.
Probably run into you soon, John.

From Kiwiland to Schweiss-world in one season!
Just say you miss us and we might feel bad enough to ski with you again at the "real Alp" when you get tired of those Alps. ::)
hey, Wipe! i thought you were going to stop by Richmond, VA, for some ski mountaineering? what am i, chopped liver? we had plans to bag the highest point in my neighborhood, remember, the 288 overpass? some friend you are. switz --- sssshmitz. sheesh.
I can understand your frustration, but it is a Stevens Pass controlled property, therefore they owe you nothing. As for said employee, I am not surprised he was skimming a little off the top. Opportunistic Genious or Filthy Bastard? I guess that depends on your perspective. Most area emplyees and people who live up in the mountains generally hate seeing all the people from "the west side" coming up to "their" mountains, and usually will happily screw anyone from the city that...
Depth Hoar has radically different structure and mechanical failure modes from Surface Hoar. Check it out! (in fact, check out the whole page if you've never seen it, it contains large chunks, but not all of, Bruce Tremper's informative avalanche text.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, as long people understand what you're telling them. I thought you were pretty clear. I have no problem calling surface hoar depth hoar once it's buried. That way you don't have to say "surface hoar that got buried".
sorry if I'm getting remedial, but my laypersons understanding is that: Hoar frost can form anywhere in the snowpack where there is a high temperature gradient, and where there is space for...
