Awesome trip Kyle and Dan.
That looked like a lot of work, no better way to make your goal come true.
I wonder if anyone has snowboarded all 5, like you did in one year?
The shot of Dan skiing next to the avy lilies is my favorite for best shot (of the year). The log crossing on tenny runners looked kind of spicy.
Way to have patience to make the long trip.
Joe
Incredible to see so much snow in Colorado so late in the season.
Very nice TR and thanks for sharing some info on summer riding in another part of the country.
What's the distinctive peak in the background?
Holy crap dude, nice work you two!  I was thinking about you guys doing that slog this weekend...glad you nailed the 5 man!  What a feat!  That's tight!  Wish I could have gone... :(  So I got a little snow finger for about 600' of vert with the gf chillin' at the lake, but it secured month 22.  You should get sponsored by Red Bull so we can have some energy drinks for free when we tour...hehehe!   :D

*modified*

Okay, now after seeing all your pics...
Congratulations Kyle. Very impressive to get them all in one season.

Ha!  Are we going to paint lines next?
We?  Feel free to do whatever you want.
I forgot the snowboard lane though.  It goes more like this:

The optimal route would look something like this:

(    ||   !    `.
)   ||    !   `.
(    ||   !    `.
)   ||    !   `.

From left to right, that is ski lane, glissade chute, posthole lane, bootpack.  Got it people?!

Ha!  Are we going to paint lines next?
Bugs??  Did you drive to the TH?  FS reports road not open last mile and 1/2.  Thanks.
yup, that was us creeping across the side of that bowl, as the two of you came bombing down that little steep chute that I think is a waterfall after things melt out.

For pretty much the same reasons that skiers rabidly prefer 'fresh tracks'. It's also bad form to posthole down the uphill track.

I'm not sure why they are so drawn to unstepped snow instead of using the more direct cowpath...

I thought that might have been you and Brenda we skied past on Sunday.  You were on the traverse out as we skied off the east ridge.  I didn't spot you guys until we were pretty far below you.  Sounds like you had a good weekend.
Sweet. Way to get out there.
Thanks T.  I was wondering what was left there.  700vf is not so compelling quite yet this season.
I love seeing what else there is to ski outside Southwestern BC. Nice Work! Keep posting trips from up there...
I was up there yesterday as well with snoslut, but we got kind of a late start at 6:40 and made a pretty leisurely ascent. It was my first trip up Adams and I wanted to go all the way, so I booked it up from the Lunch Counter to reach the summit and get back down to the chutes to meet Eric at around 5 pm. The snow was pretty soft by then and fun for the first 1/3 or so, but then we had the terrible idea of continuing down the same chute instead of crossing over the rocks into the next one. That...
Sunday, July 13  Diana & I had so much fun last weekend we had to repeat, unfortunately without the 'very impressive' Dorothea.  Perhaps one of the gals will de-lurk & post photos.  Quite a bit bumpier than last weeks creamy-dreamy, but still way more fun than the Muir snowfield.  Even the Ice Cave flats are better for geezers than packing skis down the 'Staircase of Giants".  One can still ski to within a hundred feet of the Valley Road at 4t...
That's a good amount of steep veggies you guys tore up, nice work!
East side via the PCT and I think Diamond will yield.  I'm going to be mountain biking up in Oakridge on Wednesday and I'll get some beta.  Evan and I may try and attempt snowdome a week from this Friday.  I'll email you with more info.
Here's a google earth image of the general locations of Sibola's and Nine Mile Mtn.

Nice to meet you, Keith! Beautiful day at Rainier, but then, when isn't it? Always good just to be up there. We've never skied this late in the year, which made it fun. Conditions were pretty good, too. But yes, it was crowded! We got a late start from home and didn't get to Paradise until around 10:00 am. That means we parked way down the road and got some extra hiking in (as expected). But that's OK -- it was a fun day. Maybe we'll bump in...
I almost always use approach shoes and carry boots, unless almost all of the walking will be on snow (I ski on big tele boots).  If my feet get wet a change of socks takes care of it.
The old saying is, "A pound on the feet is worth 5 on the back."
How was the road? Would I be able to drive to the trailhead in my low clearance Subaru Legacy? Thanks, Garth  :)
Sounds like a good time out!  I forget that nap conditions are an essential part of turns in summer!  :)
did not bring skis? is this really oyvind?
Thanks y'all.

Put some more pics on picasa:

Ryan's pole broke the first hour of the trip, i can't imagine doing that much without !

Just saw that area again from Fortress and Chiwawa.
still hope to do that Dakobed traverse sometime...

I think that it is also somewhat person specific.  My frame and weight (220+lbs) pretty much relegates me to heavier hiking boots anyway.  I do have light hikers, but unless I am carrying no pack on a stroll or a very light pack my feet get very fatigued.  Under my weight there is simply too much flexture of my arch, especially on trails with uneven surfaces.  So my ski boots vs. my steel shanked hikers are pretty much a wash weight wise.

I don't know if there...
Dan - the higher hills definitely lacked lubrication from the heavens above this year.
Wow!  Great pics.
Your TR brought back many memories of skiing up there.  It is a beautiful area with some fine snow conditions and often not very traveled.
Usually hiked/skied into the area - like the mtn. bike idea.
Way to celebrate!
Nice shots!  Way to get after it - I'm glad you found the solitude you were seeking.  Looks like a great time........
I don't mind a mile or two in ski boots, I've done far worse before.  But I think I would rather carry my boots on my back when faced with the number of log traverses the Heliotrope trail currently has.  Mud and rocks I can handle, but when balanced above a roaring river on a narrow log, I want something with a flexible sole.

On the other hand, my Soloman trail running shoes are pretty much built for that type of trail, and extremely lightweight, so it's reall...
I was wondering about Diamond myself.  Looking at the Bachelor webcam today though, it was pretty discouraging, as there's been a huge meltoff in the last week or so.  Not sure on Snowdome, but came across this link from Cascade Climbers indicating that as of last week there were fallen trees blocking the road about 1/2 way to Cloudcap........

For all my approaches up the Carbon, I was always farther west from lower on the glacier.  It gets steeper and has some rolling icefalls just below WW and LR.  If possible, my guess is that you may have had an easier time getting over there by traversing across the Carbon Glacier from Curtis Ridge at a lower elevation, which would also be less exposed to bombs from above.  Of course, I wasn't there and haven't seen the Carbon this year; that's just my guess.
Its interesting that there is so much snow there and so little at Sunrise

I agree. Were the winds this winter such that there was a much stronger rain shadow effect over the NE side? What I could see of the Sunrise area did indeed look very bare, as did lower Curtis Ridge.

Yea, that was the highpoint we achieved in the dark, we tried to go further to the west - to the climbers right of the ridge, but a massive crevasse spanned the entire upper glacier as far as we could tell, we worked our way up to it, constantly looking for a way across, I suppose the real crossing is lower and to the right on the glacier - before the roll, but sunlight revealed that way to be fairly broken too.

We did hear a full on Ice lanch sometime around midnight - sounds like it...
I skied the Flett Headwall and Spray Park last year on the 4th of July but the coverage looks much better this year.  It would sure be nice if they would finish plowing the road.  Its interesting that there is so much snow there and so little at Sunrise.  Good trip and great report.
Nice work guys.  Hopefully we can hook up soon -- been back east.  Evan and I, along with another friend, skied off the summit two weeks and a day ago.  Apparently far better coverage, with most of the rock still covered by then recent snow.  We climbed up a narrow chute climber's right of the wide old chute, avoiding the knife edge.  The descent was a bit sketch in the 50 + degree chute, so it was more a 50 ft somewhat disconcerting edge step down the first forty f...
Missed this way back when. Strong work/lucky you! :).

and the only ski tracks we saw were from last weekend.

Some of those tracks could have been ours from Tuesday.  In fact we saw tracks that were likely put down by Stewie and Scotsman the week before.  I am glad you had snow conditions as good as we did.  Still wonder why the Bagley Lakes area is so bad.

Nice photos, I wish you photos...
Here are some of my photos...  Between Jeff_s and I we took so many that I couldn't hope to share them all, but I've uploaded the best 70 to the web.  You can see them here (high-res versions may not finish uploading for a few hours)

Some of the highlights:

if the yellow dot was your intended entry point to the route, then I would say you're definitely a purist.  ;)

Joe,
Sorry I missed out.  Glad the chutes still went.

Me too, it would have been nice to have you along.

Me too, it would have been a disappointing walk back had they not.

Nice report - surprising how well the snow has stuck around up there!  Any sense if it would still be good for a few more days?  Also, how was the monitor ridge route looking?

I fully suspect that you'd be able to get 2500+' for a while yet. I'd be cautious about getting stuck in the sheer-walled section of the canyon if things melt back much mo...
Nice stuff, Charles! Sounds like ideal snow conditions.

Glad you had a good trip.  Nice photos.

And WOW the Mowich Face looks really dirty.

Lori (my wife) just sent me a photo of Mowich Face from about 8000 ft as she was on her way back in the chopper from picking up an injured climber off Rainier. It looked REALLY dirty...mostly brown. ...
THANKS!  Heading down to the liquior store right NOW!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHARLES !!!  Thanks again for everything.  Trust me, fifty is no big deal.  Nice TR & tracks for a 'geezer'.  ;D
Glad you had a good trip.  Nice photos.

Great tour - a mix of ambition and restfullness. The morning with the hummingbirds has me daydreaming a bit, as it sounds very nice.

It's good to see you posting a tour, Charles!
