way to take matters into your own hands. I was hoping this would be the weekend for Spray Park. But it looks like there won't be much left up there once the road opens... in August at this rate.
Very nice report, Charles.
Lots of good info passed along. Thanks.
And, to boot, you even followed the site Photos Policies.
We might have to recruit you for a moderator. ;)

Wow--what a beautiful place!!! Great tr/pics AND TURNS!!!!!!! Got to get up there sometime for that one....
Nice report - surprising how well the snow has stuck around up there! Any sense if it would still be good for a few more days? Also, how was the monitor ridge route looking?
Major inaccuracy in Joe's Pulitzer-quality TR: I had vodka and Cheetos. We must be clear about the conditions.
I'd like to see him try that on 7th heaven ;)
That is some climb though. Especially the last section that hardly gets ridden.
Hot tip for anybody riding the slack country at Steven's... Carry a hot dog in your pocket. I dropped into tye bowl after a patroller and dog, and found a giant sack of cut up hot dogs they had lost. It took me a bit to catch up to them, but when I did, the dog knew I was holdin.

I have one dog who, in her prime (she's now 15 and slowing down a LOT, but in her day was the most athletic dog I've ever known)
Speaking of fit dogs. This year at Steven Pass, we were getting onto the Double Diamond lift and on the chair ahead of us a patroller got on and left his dog to follow up on foot. That dog headed straight up under...
By the way, Dan ended up with around 13,000 feet of vert for the day! Way to get after it. Here are a few photos where I managed to capture the elusive Dan Helmstadter in action.

6:3o PM Tuesday July 8.
Neither of us brought a camera but to borrow from Blair the views are “mind melting“.
No need for a camera when you can draw pictures with your pen. Well written TR. I can taste the beer and chips.
Nope. It could have gone but looked sloppy and intermittent.
BTW check out ovrthhills's TR from June 30-July 1, 2007 for photos and more snow.

Joe,
Sorry I missed out. Glad the chutes still went. That scree bench was there last year when we skied the west chute. Is there still good coverage all the way to the meadow?

Looks like despite the "joy o' meter" numbers being pretty low, you all still managed to make a good day of it. Way to go get it out there in the Olympics! Next year you all are going to have to show me the goods.
Nice Tr Joe.

Have a fun outing, Wiley!
Certainly no can of worms from my perspective, and I probably should have just left it at answering your question.

Heading up tomorrow sometime. Not exactly sure what I am doing. Depeneds on who shows up and how it looks. At the least it will be yo-yo-ing Table to the bagley lakes.

Good stuff up there beyond all the trail thrashes. Monika's TR may have explained why the snow has been good the past several days.
Yeh, seems like there are pretty good conditions north. Maybe the aspect to the sun also is helping at those locales. Photos from other reports at Rainier and Adams seem to show much deeper sun cups. Maybe the...
Dan - I was lost in the dark on the glacier with you - a great scene. Thanks for bringing it alive.

Hi everyone,
Sorry to have opened a can of worms, I was afraid that my mention of bringing my dog could conjure up lots of opinions or assumptions. Sorry if it's done that. Yes, of course I'm planning on blue bagging for him. Also, I'm fully aware of his capabilities in terms of fitness and grip on varied terrain, I've toured with him a lot. My inquiry was simply whether or not that top section below pikers was real steep (I just coudn...

Nice job remembering the stats Monika.
Here's a shot looking back towards our camp, which is out of sight to the left. On the ascent we dropped into the clouds and climbed back out, but on the descent we stayed high and tried to keep the ridge in sight:

I wasn't aware you could take poochs up Adams or I would have taken mine. Given the conditions yesterday, it would have been a cake walk for any dog with a little bit of endurance.
And yes, Please!! Anyone taking your dog out. Please be considerate with the pooh.
Let's try this thumb nail thing one more time...
two more times...

You're a purist in my book Dan. Too bad about Liberty, but glad you didn't end up in any holes.

Some interesting crossings ;)
Full nude?
Awesome trip! Thanks for the report.
Yeah I've only been on the Emmons route once but it was pretty disappointing how the glacierhikers managed to plunge step every square meter of the route, especially the wide corridor which otherwise seems like a great place to really open it up on skis. At least that's my excuse for the high speed digger...s I took there. I'm not sure why they are so drawn to unstepped snow instead of using the more direct cowpath, but maybe it is jealous punishment. That's the price paid...
From the armchair, that shot you have of Lib Ridge makes it seem Out for all modes of travel ... plainly that's a lot of nonsnow below the BP where you have to climb up+left, nearly the whole toe below TR is bare, etc. You keep hearing those stories from people that have to buy a new tent (and new underwear) after rocks make entrance and exit portals in their tents at TR, so more rocks up top can't be a good thing. Be interesting to see how many more reports for Lib Ridge are seen on C...
Sorry Liberty wasn't there for you, Dan. I recommend April-ish.
Somebody finally agrees with me that the Emmons sucks! (Ducks, covers, and runs....)

Nice punishment for missing all those powder days last winter, Mac. But a day in the mountains is always better than a day underwater.
What did I do wrong? ::)
Snowbell and I skied the Elk Mountain chutes yesterday from Deer park---look for his TR. Not much snow left there---more penance for me? ;)
Good stuff up there beyond all the trail thrashes. Monika's TR may have explained why the snow has been good the past several days.
It was good times up there yesterday. Here is a photo from the drive out and at the top of the chutes.
Cool! Sounds like a fun area to explore - good job you guys.
Awesome. I so want to ski that mountain again, especially after looking at it for several days on the ptarmigan traverse. I wish I had more gear and just could've continued going and going. Ha.
Way to get up in there guys. The schwack and rivers sound fun. Such loves this mountains spill on us, eh?

buell and I got up to the summit yesterday, after a 4 am start, in the best weather you could ask for. Snow from the summit wasn't worth riding. We had to make a short carry to get back to pikers. Stability in the sw chute was bomber, and perfect, corn. It got a little choppy just before the bottom 1/4, but you can still cut over, if you choose( i chose not). Snow just beneath the chutes was smooth as silk. .Best ride of the spring for me., then got dirty, then got sticky. Skied it out to...

Excellent stuff. We need to get together some time and take the boys out together. Skiing with your son or daughter is a very rewarding experience although as they get older and stronger and start beating you up the hill and saying, " come on old man", it takes a while to adjust! ;)
I'm game!

Blue-bagging is a good question, seems like if it's a place where we people would do it, then maybe we should follow suit for our pups too...
Seems like a reasonable line to draw, along with not leaving it in the middle of trails (as with the cat track from the upper lot at Alpental - ewww!
And to be clear, I certianly did not mean to say that no dog cou...

We're going up on Friday, and I'm going to print your pictures and pin them to the back of Jimmy's pack as a "carrot" to keep me going.
You're somehow assuming you'll be behind me.... You know I need lots of breaks to
For what it's worth, my dog climbed to the summit of Adams with me last year and "skied" the SW chutes w/ me the year before. He's in great shape, though (puts me to shame) and has better traction than me, even when I have ski crampons on. But, if I was going on something where I thought I would need boot crampons and/or an ice ax for myself, then I personally would leave him home. I imagine these might be necessary on the ridge or chutes on Adams if c...
I had missed this report, but am glad that I looked back in June to see it posted. I have done it later in season and loved it then, but it looked to be in great form when you hit it.
I was considering it for the next week or so as an overnight. Presumably the trail will be free of snow by then, but the hope would be that the bulk of the upper mountain would be in good shape for a couple days of yo-yo skiing.
I will have to look back into my old photos and see w...

Nope - you don't need a special permit for camping at Jefferson Park. I think that's for Pamelia only because it is so close to the road that it gets hammered by overuse if they don't restrict it.

The psychological aspects of soloing even a simple dog route like this one can be overwhelming sometimes.
Very nice report Amar and as always some incredible pictures. In June '06 I went up south climb on Adams solo, unfortunately without skis. I completely understood your mention of the psychological battles that enter the mind during an endeavor like that. Nice work, really great pictures! Your writing i...

you're likely an awesome dog owner who only takes you loyal pal on tours that are appropriate for him to fully enjoy
And hopefully take along the pooper scooper and bluebag for the dog, too, to spare us all the sort of unpleasant excrement we find mainly at the start of ski tours in late spring snow. Let the flames begin, maybe continue discussion at Random Tracks...

I made the difficult decision to head down: feeling strong, plenty of energy, with a stove to make as much water as I needed, but just no desire to fight the winds for little reward, especially while alone. The psychological aspects of soloing even a simple dog route like this one can be overwhelming sometimes.

To follow up on Jims comment about only one chute being open. We were up there last weekend and only the left hand chute (viewed from above) is continuous now.
I skied the chute on Sunday (6th) it was actually very nice. It may have looked a little dirty, but it was the smoothest snow between Muir and Paradise.
Nice photos and report, looks like you enjoyed the sunny weather. Must be tough having the summer off ;D
Way to take advantage of the stellar low elevation snowpack. Skiing Pilchuck in July is unique I'm sure. 8)

Thanks for the helpful TR and comments from Joedabaker and others. I'm heading to Adams Friday to ski the S ridge or possibly the SW chutes. We've never been there before and we'd like to tag the true summit while we're there. I'm curious to know whether it gets too steep to skin all the way to the true summit? Are ice axe and boot crampons (assuming firmer snow up...
