Way to get the last dregs with your son, Greg.
Well done.
Well done.
Good work; classic photo #2. How many miles to snow/skinning, and how many total to camp?
Nice job both days, Dan. It was a nice weekend on a fine mountain.
Nice job, TAY-boys---my best trip of the season for sure. Thanks for the photos, effort, company and spirit. But how did we all end up at the worst DQ on the planet on the drive home? ???
Great trip guys! Thanks for the good company and looking forward to the next adventure.

Saw those tracks this afternoon from Alta Vista
Must have been yours as I took this around noon or so.

Even though we had much better snow coverage two weeks earlier, my party appeared to be the only one that skinned up the mountain. It was debatable which method was faster, but there is a certain degree of style to skinning over booting. We probably traveled an extra mile, though. ;D

Thanks for the update and great tr! Looks like you got it on a pretty good day! Did M.M.'s north side look accessable, mainly through the saddle just NE of knapsack?
I'm assuming you mean the saddle marked here with the question mark? (from an old photo). I didn't make it up that high to look over to that side which is very rugged!
author=danhelmstadter link=topic=10652.msg43297#msg43297 date=1216090984]There were some old and much faded tracks on the Wy'east Face.
The tracks between the two rock islands are ours from three days earlier:

The other tracks (further to the climber's right) looked to be a few days old.

author=andyski link=topic=10636.msg43236#msg43236 date=1215972873]I'm sure that, theoretically, you could skin, but I didn't see anyone doing so and didn't even consider bringing mine.
After a brief boot up the Crescent Glacier (my only booting/cramponing in four trips to the Adams summit), I skinned the rest of the way -- was pretty easy since the snow was fairly soft.
The SW Chutes varied between fair and very good, although...

Way to go. Looks great; I'd like to get up there but SOME OF US HAVE TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!!
What a great trip!! Great to meet everyone, and a pleasure to be on a trip with Travertine again. I agree with Dan, the full moon with light clouds below was great. Summit day weather conditions were excellent!!

Great day for a ski summit. Thanks to travertine for putting together the trip. Great to be sleeping under a full moon.
It was great meeting everyone and and getting to ski an amazing route!!!!

However, half way down I noticed a good line to the side of First Mother Mountain so I climbed back to the pass and headed to the notch just beyond First Mother and had a great run.
You win. We looked at that line, from about halfway down from Knapsack, last weekend. It called out to both of us, but we were too attracted to the fallline below us to head...
Thanks for an encouraging report. I've been trying to find time to get up there. Your TR might be the inspiration I needed. Looks like the snow on the summit was pretty nice. If it's still there in 10 days I might be able to get some.
Nice - sounds like fun! What was the round trip time?
Sorry about the photo / map in original post not showing, gremlins must be at work.

The wound is healing nicely. I'm already feeling a lot better in situations that previously really strained my heart, so I guess that's a good sign.
Here's to a speedy recovery, take care.
Sweet vid - I like the rockfall part and DJ Jazzy snowboarder. We'll be heading up there next week. Looks like the conditions are still good. Did you ski any of the Langille Bowls at all?

The official beer stash for this route is the creek about 1.5 miles up the trail. There is a real advantage to this -- it make the last mile and a half of the return more bearable.
Why didn't we think of that Lisa?

You've got a hat and tent pole and glove in my car. We'll try gettin' you that beer this weekend when you see the other side of "gettin' turns"...;)
We'll nab your 71st and Dan's 5th ??? ??? this next month!
Someone on TGR said those are Glacier Lilies...
If I remember correctly glacier lillies are yello...
great first TR - and impressive geographical knowledge ;D
just an added note on gear and approach/descent - ice axe is highly advised for that gully leading up to the pass. Below the pass and particularly in the gully it is ugly survival skiing (but faster and more fun than walking!). The gully probably has a week or 2 of skiability before the moats on the side get too big.
Great day and thanks guys for skipping work to get out there with your unemployed buddy!

Very cool!! Looks like a great ski!!!!!!!! CONGRATS!!!
Quite the march!!! Good one (all five!).
Thanks guys.
Yes, the Grouse Creek approach was fairly pleasant. There was a short section of bushwacking in the slide path, but if you're into this kind of masochism it's actually quite enjoyable.
Think we had a pretty good view of the headwall from one of the pull-outs just before the trailhead. Not even needed to get out of the car for that ;-)
Scottsman. You might have seen our orange Mt.Hardware tent, but I think we were back quite late (too much...

Nice work!
I also eyed that West side... hard not to ;)
I also humped to Hannegan Pass, but I was there a couple weeks ago and learned that instead of heading up to Hannegan Pass, dropping down into the small col, then heading up the hill toward the hump its just easier to go into the Hannegan camp turnoff before going up to Hannegan through the trees - from there you have

Nice!
... and congratulations for realizing that the approach does not have to include the log of death, downed trees, or the mandatory creek wading of the standard climber's route. However, in your case, the Grouse Chutes approach denied you a good distant, front-on view of the Headwall climbing route, n'est pas?

As Scotteryx said, we passed Sherman Peak and linked up with the Easton route. We only encountered one questionable snow bridge that warranted a belay.
Left the skis at the base or the Roman Wall. Seeing as how this was such a moderate ski down, I plan on skiing the Roman Wall next time.

I can definitely see why this one needs to be skied on a regular basis. I still remember the feeling of when we approached the top, when I still couldn't see in yet, and I hear Ryan say "are you serious man, that thing is damn near vertical!" The concern was quickly abated by the supreme conditions found in the line. Excellent day guys. Do want.
It's nice how well Ruth holds onto snow in the summer, eh?
Ah yes, the classic and deceptive "fools' shortcut." It got me too, on my first time out there.

Emailed NPS regarding road opening. This is the ranger's response:
I contacted the Carbon River Ranger Station and was informed that it is slated to open sometime this coming Saturday, July 19th. If you would like to double check before you come you can call the Ranger Station at (360) 829-9639 to verify. Again, thank you for your interest!

Hey Lisa,
It was great running into you on Sunday! Next time, we'll have to meet up before the climb. Although those margaritas were awfully tasty....

Two days is casual and nice if you are not in a rush.
"Better put TWO beers in the creek!" There is no creek near the parking lot, best bring a cooler and have fun. :)

Yeah, spending the night on a creek bed last winter in my attempted excursion was quite the consummation without the err, consummation.
great report, Ryan.
and, you're welcome. I went after that 2x w/ Sky, and schedules being what they are, missed the, er, consummation. on the list for next year...
some sweet pics, fellas--looks like fun.

That's impressive Monika! I've had to ski without tongues before and I thought that was a wallowing challenge. Couldn't imagine no liners. 8)

... Is it a two day tour or can it be done in a day? ...
It can definitely be done as a day trip. Sky does it all the time!
Figure that it is about two hours longer up and an hour longer returning than the C-D slog. So, if the Coleman Deming trip gets you back to the car by 3:00, you should get back to car from the Boulder Ridge trip about 6:00 PM. Bet...
Yes the Falls Creek (non)bridge is just short of where you can actually see Comet falls. As to how bad it is you might get varying opinions. Probably many cascade hardman types would think nothing of it.
I personally would not cross what is left of bridge. If it did fail to hold your weight and moved/fell in that is at worst possible spot, above a plunge pool and small falls series.
Otherwise there is (was) a snow bank leading in that complicates just rock hopping somehow b...
