Thanks for the report of conditions across town. I concur that with about another 5 feet of snow, we'll be set.
Filbo, got a TR on the Resort? Filled in or skinny? Thinking about going tomorrow. Just got back from Paradise ~ 2-3 ft of heavy snow - what a slog - took the pattern base boards - should have known better (or at least have checked), but hey, it's Christmas. A few hearty souls doing laps on Alta Vista. I think I'll ride a chairlift tomorrow...
Yeah, you're quicker than I am. Still trying to fix the problem. Sorry about that...I'm doing the same thing I normally do...don't know why it's doing that...
Your pictures put new meaning to the phrase

sorry i was so mean...very cool video! dogs look like they are in heaven. also not all bellevue people are the same....
It's ok, I used to think the same thing about Bellevue and I didn't take it personally at all. It was kinda funny actually! I lived in Ballard for 5 years, then way in the woods in Snoqualmie on 5 acres for years while m...

telemack: fear the day that you have to dig your friend out.
it will happen with his/her attitude.
My comment was actually not directed at a specific person; I've set my own heuristic traps too.
Peace on Earth.
Not sure what to add to this conversation but as I spent several hrs one day many years ago digging my then girlfriend/roommate out of a avy and held her in my arms while awaiting body rescue/retrieval my heart rate goes up whenever issues like this are discussed

i only read down to telemacks post and these are my thoughts, for what little they are worth;
it sounds like it was a a friggin' circus. not interested.
the crowds in that place have always felt scetchy to me.
"don't let the stupid people of this world influence your decisions"

This year isn't giving me a lot of confidence either, it's a snowpack that needs close attention and vigilance. Just my .02$
Second that.
danhelmstadter, thanks for sharing. Those are some sobering statistics. I think this is a good reminder for everyone to dig their pits and read the snowpack. The numbers of backcountry enthusi...
Thanks guys. Gunbarrel was awesome! Joeda, good info. I was surprised to see how much the snow had transported - with a nearly 6' deep pack in one area and 4' south of there...
Holly, glad to know we're providing you some entertainment! Hope your healing is going well! I found my dad's old touring 3-pin xc skis...I'm feeling a midwest touring tr coming on...;)
Have a great (and safe, especially this weekend!) holiday everyone!

Wow, I am jealous. I want a dog. I'm at home in MN trying to convince my mom to let me take the cat out, but I'm not getting too far with that one...;)
That's awesome! Way to go, that is a great hill! I had my setup with when I dropped my gf at the zoo yesterday...I almost headed over to play on the sledding hill. Thanks for sharing!
Howdy ron j,
It may not seem that way but they listen and take commands when they are running. At 2:08 in the second vid you can hear me call "gee" and they peeled off to the right toward the orchard. Then, going through the Arbor vitae hedge into the orchard, you could see they were stopped and waiting for me, when I called them up with a "let's go".
Other than that, it's all about having a bomber snowplow and a solid butt-check.&n...

Very cool, David,
So how do you keep the dogs from dragging you all over hell's half acre, short of cutting them loose? ???
Or do you just go where the dogs want to go and hope they make it home when they get hungry? ;)

Way to get the local goods, James. If this weather keeps up we'll need to start a new page here: TAYIMB.
Have a fun trip home and don't loose a tooth in those hockey matches at home ;)
Good to see you, Dan and Kyle at the Elk, thanks for the Nachos!
Yesterday we were just South your ski location and dug a pit. 5800 ft, approx, 35 degree slope, West facing. Four feet deep to ground. No failure on compression tests, only layers to note were near the ground older broken hoar layer about 8 inches above ground and VERY slight soft wind slab layer that is 4-6 inches below top surface...

How did you get back up the hill once you reached the bottom? I can't see any easy climb out.
I'll second the comment on your style.

Great pit info, thanks Scott. Good to see people digging pits and detailing them in TRs. Gunbarrel looked sweet!
I really enjoyed the video.
Although I kept thinking of that old saying: "If you're not the lead dog, the view never changes." ;)

Yes, looks like snow vs rain is going to hang in the balance locally in the next couple of days. Hopefully there will be just a little more lowland skiing for the holiday days when it's not possible to take the whole day out.
Thanks for sharing your pit results Scott. And all the pics. Sorry not to be out there myself, but vicarious ski outings via extensive TR writeups are the next best thing.
I skiied it that way today, and then up to Cleator Rd. There is much less snow on the Fragrance Lk trail than on the Pine and Cedar trail. I didn't do any damage to my skis, but I wouldn't recommend it. Weather permitting I'll try Lily and Lizard Lakes tomorrow (though the forecast is not promising).
Thanks for the report - I wondered how Tabor was looking! We stuck mostly to quick (like 4-second) runs down the sled hill near our place at Brooklyn Park, and some x-country ramblings around town (surprisingly good snow).
Nice work! Many people underestimate rip city peaks. Is Powel Butte next? Maybe after the x-mas storm.
Skied a few shots up on Table today. First was a westish facing shot from the approach ridge (there was not a whole lot of new snow on this aspect, then I did a couple laps on the "brow" or "prow" of Table (north facing). The NWAC assessment of the snowpack seemed to be right on - with about a foot to 1/2 foot of pow on top about a foot of varying density consolidated windpack (fist to pencil) which is all resting on the old unconsolidated pow and various older layers next t...

I love hearing those words ! Congrats on your new trailbreakers. ;)
As it turns out, they float well on the down too - kept me cruising on top of a crust that troubled Silas a little yesterday...

We had been up there just the day prior, took the same route up. It's funny you mentioned how windscoured it usually is because that's usually why we access E Peak further to the N than Bullion, but as you said, it was filled in pretty good. I imagine u guys got some more loading as winds seemed to be bringing the goods to C Basin the day before too. Glad you guys got some good shots!

East facing slopes off Phinney Ridge are quite nice too
Here's NW 71st (east facing) just after sundown on Sunday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJxJKLUU744
I wouldn't call it an epic backcountry ski tour per se, but skate skiing along Alki and then up to breakfast on Admiral was quite a hoot. Taking the steepest road back down to Beach Drive was rather exciting though...
Do you think Fragrance Lake is skiable up from the Larabee SP trailhead on Chuckanut drive?
Love it!!
Folks using the rare lowland snow to ski their neighborhoods.
Steve, you have me thinking of a trip up Haystack!

Nice tr! Glad to see that you guys made it back safely after having a brush with the dark. There's some really good info for safety in the high routes here. ;) Have a great holiday!
Hey, you too! We gotta meet up soon...pm us if you're heading up there after the 27th.
sorry i was so mean...very cool video! dogs look like they are in heaven. also not all bellevue people are the same....
I poached your uptrack today. Thanks for putting in the hard work for slackers like me to mooch off. :)
Parked at the TH. Went straight in from there. There was a track set, probably from this weekend. Ski penetration was 5-10cm. Skiing should get better with the small amount of snow this afternoon.
newton? first bowl? I'm new to the area. I don't know where these are.
