Nice, Don! Looks much mo betta snow than Hyak environs had yesterday.
But I'm not complaining. Sun and any kind of snow made for a great day.

That is a really nice line. Love to ski it in powder someday but it rides well in spring corn also.
Nice work getting some before the weather moved in. We looked at that slope Saturday on our way out to Hurricane Hill, it was tempting! It is one of our favorites and we have yet to ski it this season. Nice pictures Doug,

So .......... Chmnyboy suggests we go skiing on Saturday, lets us do the driving, ditches us at the last second for another partner, and finishes off the day drinking our beer .............. what kind of partner is this ???
Actually, a really great one. It was a good call on your part to join Les. This is some challenging terrain and not a good place to be going alone. Would have been fun to join you guys, but our day turned out to be fun too. We will definitely get out to Steeple be...

We were the group that was up there as well, we did ski the NW face of Foss and it was fine, we did a cut and nothing happened, down below the pow pow was fantastic!
Yep, that's the one! Thanks for the picture!
Nice summit shot. You must have skinned up early. I started from Alpental just after 10, hoping to ski the Slot, but by the time I got to it the snow had become very sticky and with the fast approaching storm from the SW I beat a retreat. Skiing down the upper Phantom and then through the woods was a torture. N
chmnyboy: Did you get at the top of that couloir from Obstruction Point Road, If not, how?
I was watching a couple boot up underneath the cornice you mention on the N side of Foss, and I noticed what was probably the slide you saw, similar aspect as the booter, but lower (and to west, near up track to Castle). I was entertained as well as concerned.
Hey...nice turns!
My tour Friday was in and out of the clouds most of the day. By the time we made the peak it was pea soup. You chose a much better day to to be cranking turns. Those cornices along the north rim sure are spectacular!

Ah, springtime in the great Pac NW! Might be the last time we see the sun for a while, which is gooooood.

Went up to Baker yesterday to try out my new Dynafit setup (Thanks again JimH!) and check out the new snow.
So, what do you think of the Dyna-fiddles??? Glad the day had a safe ending.........

I highly recommend Pelle Lang's Skier's Lodge and guide service.
http://skierslodge.com/
You can opt to ski with his guides for a few days and then on your own for a few days. His lodge can be all inclusive (room, food, guide) or just room.
Also, no need to speak French.
Bon Voyage!

oldschool, Scotty, take it outside por favor.
Thanks for the update. Jill and I were the first vehicle thru the east gate at Tioga Pass last year. It would be great if it happens in early May.

I know I know but at least Im not wearing pink panties!
The lamentably provocative sstroopers = Snoqualmie Snow Troopers. As the spawn of two great losing traditions, a Virginian father and a German mother, I just wish Tim could come up with something a little less incendiary. Carry on.

I was wondering when someone was going to take a bite on that one..... and I find myself longing to jump in.
Scotsman, your TAY name blatantly makes fun of people who love "scot"ch. In addition, viewing your "name" on TAY has caused my skiing partner to drink more. This has caused him to miss out on many days on the mountain, turning him into a bitter nazi. No of...

Interesting article.
Thought you'd like it.I can't claim it as it was first posted by another worthy ( TonyM I think... but I may be wrong) in another debate where Nazi references were invoked. ;D

Dear Otter,
As a fisherman I have been offended by otter's eating and torturing my beloved brown trout. The rein of terror that your namesake has inflicted upon these poor defenceless trout is an abomination. Can you please change your name so I am not reminded of otter terror. Since you are so PC I'm...

No offense, but your screen name is a pretty blatant Nazi reference. I assume it is not intended to be so, but it can easily be misinterpreted.

Can we look forward to a TR on that one, young Buck?
I don't know what you are talking about.
Now I'm off to Splitfest up at Baker for the weekend!
It looks like a great tour and a beautiful basin!
Thanks for the beta on the ice bulge.
Thanks for the beta on the ice bulge.
We skied Hel Basin mainly for the novelty factor. We've both skied a number of other lines on Cannon and, on the first day of spring, it seemed like a nice juxtaposition to visit Hell.
We'd also looked into the basin from Cashmere Mtn a few weeks earlier and it looked like nice terrain.
Regarding the ice bulge, it was simple from a climbing standpoint but still attention-getting for those of us who prefer planks over spiked feet. There was perhaps 70 feet o...

It was great to meet you guys. Thanks again for letting us ride your coat tails on the rap from the col!
That traverse is never fun. Way to ski a really rad line. Looks like you did a variation between the n face and the n face couloir? Conditions were awesome on n faces...very stable.
Cahoneys of this caliber were not issued where I grew up. Well played, Otter. Solo, it seems?
Sorry I missed your call..I was up in the great white north. Looks like a good effort. Maybe the secret is a better lower elevation snowpack? Then maybe you could just drop down to Gold Meyer and the Middle Fork from Snow Lake?
Thanks again to you and Barb for organizing this trip. What a glorious day! It was extra special to finally get out in the bc with Rachel, and to see the Clem clan in action.
Looks good so how was the snow for skiing ?

Otter: No whumphing or evidence of recent slide activity on north facing slopes. Recent snow had peeled off of E, S, and W slopes due to the sun earlier in the week, but the wind kept the temperatures low on Saturday and everything in the sun was locked down. Pit on a sheltered NW slope at 7500' ECT23, Q3, No propagation. We cut a moderately sized cornice on the north face that res...
I was thinking of checking out Cannon soon, what made you take the Hel Basin approach? How bad was the "ice bulge", were ice tools necessary or was it straighforward with crampons?
I'm not grossly familiar with the area, but I'd planned on heading up the old road that continues from the lake stuart parking lot. Maybe that's just too long an approach...

Fantastic effort!
I talked someone into a Big Snow attempt bike-hike-ski a few years ago...
let's just say we didn't make it. Trial 2 the next year: late start/flat tire.
Trial 3 : another flat tire... different car
That was a couple years ago, and I'd tried to put Big Snow out of my mind. I remember the bike being much longer and really brutal with skis on our backs!
have to try again...

That second shot is awesome. One for the wallpaper.
For sure. Great shot.
Thanks for the TR. Your report conjures both good memories of and wide aspirations for that area.
Sounds like a fun trip guys.
The cold water dip is a bit rough for my taste but luxury car camping in the volvo wagon sounds about my speed. 8)

Good read Scott. It's funny that you guys ended up going for that route. You seemed pretty sure that you were gonna take it easy. Sahale? please. Did you really think that you and Kyle would just hang out and ski mellow laps in the sun? ;)
I'm sure that we are all glad you weren't more involved in the incident. Good job taking your break in the right place at the right time. The massive deposition zone in the photo suggests that bitch sheds on the regular.
