What, no more multi-tasking?   ???

Still tele on light Fischer bc skis with 3-pin bindings and while on XC ski patrol; even have upgraded my Volkl Snowwolfs to Voile switchback bindings for the occasional longer tour on rolling terrain.  But his year, out of roughly 55 days of bc skiing, 50 have been on AT.

Good thing you weren't skiing backwards uphill---the poles would have had a really useless curve.

i slept in the safeway parking lot in bend about 2 months ago, woke up and skinned tumalo mt. got some amazing powder on the way down, followed it up with a burger and black butte porter from the the brewery. such an awesome day! I want to go back next year! was a bit ticked cause i wanted to summit bachelor, however, they wont let you go to the top if it's closed even if you don't ride the chair lifts. and no dogs... oh well... i had fun across the road
When I was 18 all of my friends had figured out that Social Security was a giant Ponzi scheme that would have to collapse before we got to collect on it, so we resolved to only work under the table and spend as much time as possible drinking beer and smoking weed. Now that I've been working aboveboard for many years and I'm close to collecting it myself it looks as if the system may remain solvent long enough, but I still have some uncertainty, as I realize that my eligibility date is...

Why are all your poles curved? Is this a new prototype.... the latest fad?

I was noticing that earlier today. I assume it's a combo of the motion of the pole and either the camera shutter or the order of the pixel scan creating a cool motion artifact. At the risk of violating the photo policy, here's an ancient Lartique photo that demonstrates a somewha...
Are you sure the Social Security reference isn't just an April Fool, since it was 4/1/10 for your post? If not, you won't need a big check to enjoy pow/snow like that each and every day of your retirement! Maybe you could consider joining SilasWild's group of "middle age" people. CONGRATS...
How old/young do you have to be before you qualify for "middle age" skier status? Wish I could have been there. Suffering under the sun in Oahu...

Andy,

Congratulations on surviving long enough to receive your first Social Security check.  You have joined a "special group".  Welcome !  8)

Thanks, but I didn't make it on tele gear--switched to old man's AT gear (Dynafit) last year!

Congrats on your new found income! I hope you are retired as well so you can get out and enjoy your big check every month. How was the stability???

Yup, retired, small check :-(.  Stability was very good where we were on North-West facing slopes.  The ceiling was low when we started out so we didn't go very high, would have kept off the steeper N-...
Nice work,  was down there also.  Made it to about 8500' on the snowfield in blowing  semi-whiteout.  Gave up on accent due to no visibility. Ripped skins, clicked in and just then weather broke of course.  I got my April fools.  Oh well, another day.  Great snow.

just speculation, but my guess is that due to the low snowpack, there's no huge berms left by snowplows, so sleds can get up onto the forest service roads from the highway, the stevens overflow lot, or some other access point.

i don't see why that area would be 'off-limits' to sleds...its national forest land, its been logged, definitely not a wilderness area.... sleds regularly make it up around Windy Pass/Union Peak area near Smithbrook Rd and play in the clear...
Yes Justin, the lightning strike burn from the summer of 08 i believe up where you push east into the more established trees.

I guess I was not clear enough...We were under our own power, however utilized the snowmachine tracks to get in w/o breaking much trail...

I also have never seen snowmo's up there, and am unsure on the legality of their use.  I suppose folks figure there is no enforcement, and they can get away with it....
What do you mean by the burn? The recent burn at the top of the ridge?
Is it kosher to even have a sled up there? I have never seen one, and although I can appreciate others having their fun, even if it is mine, I am saddened if Yodlin is going to be sledder central from now on. I have never seen a sled up there and very much enjoy the peace and quiet of the place on a storm day.

"middle aged group of 7" probably a more accurate description.
Stability was generally good, a pocket of snow near the ridge crest under a cornice was released by repeated stomping.

Thanks for the scoop
hey, guys, yeah the Bend area has a lot to like about it.  Chmny, our first thought was to headout from Dutchman Flat, but patrol had us freaked with tales of stiff bodies found just beyond the veil of the parking lot.  Tough vis conditions, so it waits for next time, and thanks for the reminder.

About the beer, it may be a bit early for the annual TAY review of what's fit to drink, but anything Deschutes has to be near the top of the list.

If you haven't already considered it and you've got another day out try Tumalo Butte. Park at Dutchman Flat snowpark (just before the West Village Lodge) and skin up to the NE. As long as you're going up you can't get lost, and there should be countless tracks. If stability is good, drop the bowl at the top, if not just ski the low angled trees you came up. I love both the descent and the beer!
Hey, if you are skining it's sidecountry at least.
Isn't Cinder Cone a neat little extra?  I've only been to Bach. a few times but got good tracks there every time.
If anyone is still interested here are some pics:
Well, then I'll be up there for a couple early morning, pre-work laps at Hyak tomorrow!
The 7" new( @ 2,600') from over night has now become 4" including the new received today, However the 3" inches expected tonight w/ a 1,500' snow level should make tomorrow AM a delight . However my take on tomorrow will be the  24" of untracked in the Alpental BC (if all plays out right tonight). Should be one of the Best Days of the year!
How's the weather up there today?  Will it still be good tomorrow early AM at Hyak or is it getting too warm today?
Put in a skin track at Summit East and did 2 laps this morning before heading to work. Damn good snow for March 30! How was Alpental? Must have been good!
yeah, I've seen several TRs on traverse b/n Howard and Mastiff and Rock, but has anyone actually picked there way down the Ho-Ma Basin??

That is a really nice line. Love to ski it in powder someday but it rides well in spring corn also.

With the current weather forecast, you may just get your chance.  :D
I remember your TR from last spring, this bowl is definitely a good destination in a variety of conditions.

chmnyboy:  Did you get at the top of that couloir from Obstruction Point Road, If not, how?

Yep. To get to the top of Steepl...

Not too bad a time considering Brenda and Mike tracked out our line before we could get to it... if ever there was anyone I don't mind beating us to the punch, it's those two. Good times all, I sure enjoyed the gathering and the glut of powder.

Looks great Gary, it's good to finally be getting some snow!  I'm moving back to Alaska, it was nice to meet you and I look forward to more reports from ONP, I enjoyed the few turns I got to make up there.
Hey MREID:  Beautiful shot, what lense did ya use?
Fun day to be sure.  Chris and I were just as supprised to run into Rusty and Dave as we were to find Brenda and Mike skiing our powder.  I so much enjoy running into TAY'ers on the hill.  If you find Brenda and Mike in the Tatoosh, it's a good indication that you are in the right place. Sorry to miss Robie and co. but we were at full capacity in our neck of the woods anyway.  And yes Mike, we did take our time before dropping in for our first run.  We were not anticipating competition...
Thanks Marcus.

I forgot to ask:  Has anyone skied the Howard-Mastiff basin all the way down to the trail?  We saw cliffs and icefalls, but no obvious route through ...and I'm usually very creative
Nice work!  That's a big day to get all the way in/out.
We were also in the parking lot enjoying the music and story-swapping. The far right group next to the Mountaineers' car. Good times, for sure!
Nice trip report with some great photos of TAY regulars!
that was really a great day. It's always a great day when you can beat Joe Bell to a line. I don't think that happens too often. ;D

Brenda and I spotted the four of you climbing up that right side of Plummer, as we came in from the Castle side. We were actually kind of surprised to see anyone over there as well. We figured we'd better hurry or you'd be coming down above us. You must have taken quite a break at the top. We tend to take our breaks at the bottom of ru...
Nice - we were the car next to you  in the parking lot and had done Castle Shoulder - Foss Peak, admired your line on Plummer when we saw it, will have to try for it next time!
Thanks for the post, Big Red.  A good day despite the reroute.  I'm glad we didn't head down towards the Middle Fork and get stuck in the dirt.  Far better to stay high up.

So .......... Chmnyboy suggests we go skiing on Saturday, lets us do the driving, ditches us at the last second for another partner, and finishes off the day drinking our beer .............. what kind of partner is this  ???

Either a smart one or a mooch.  You be the judge!  ;)
