Nice, way to get some good turns in!  Sounds like a great day with the easy approach and great snow!
Was up there yesterday and all I can say is.......exceptional snow, sun, and fun.
Great outing!
Sick! I didn't have time to look at all the pictures but the writing is great!

What did you have for breakfast?

Spooky. Glad you guys are OK!  Gripping adventure.

That baby, the Sill Glacier, has a hanging section. As I was reading, especially, "... so much debris that it looked like glacial moraine and piles of glacial debris as opposed to avalanche debris," I was thinking that it was pieces of the glacier coming down. 3,400 feet of climbing in the col.

Nice work staying alive, fellas.  Good route selection, or good luck (or both) to have you out of the way of the worst of it when it let go.

I am now even more paranoid than ever about falling cornices.

You're not paranoid if they really are coming for you! Thanks for the cautionary tale. Glad to hear that no actual skiers were hurt in the production of this adventure. Nick & I were quite happy to be watching & hearing big icefalls down onto the Nisqually from 1/4 mile away yesterday.
Glad you lived to ski/board another day, that's quite a bowling alley.
Maybe "Scotty's Stub"?  :D
Nice report on what looks like was a great trip. I can see Mt. Baker from my office window, defiantly was thinking of you guys.

Looks like I'm going to have a chat with Tyler's boss, he is being way to generous with giving him days off, we do have a business to run ......  ;)

Gary
yes,  marble mountain snow park.  sorry for the missing info.
Heading up tomorrow, thanks for the report.  Nice pics.
I think I know the answer based on your elev. reference, but did you park at Marblemount?
Thanks
Thanks for the research. Was thinking if we don't make May at Alpental Cinco de Mayo on Naches Peak might be the option( maybe neither).
Not according to DOT:

Updated Mar. 18, 2010

"WSDOT avalanche forecasters have made their initial snow accumulation and avalanche hazard assessment.

On March 16, 2010 avalanche forecasters measured the snow depth to be between 125 to 135 inches. The average for this time of year is about 180 inches.

If weather allows, maintenance crews will have the needed machinery in place to start clearing the roadway the first week in April.

I was there in March of 2003 at the Skiers Lodge and had an awesome trip.  We were blessed with storm when we arrived and the rest of the week of blue bird days to seek out steep lines and fresh snow. At that time, Skiers Lodge was based up on the hillside at the La Chaumine lodge.  After a ownership split (or some other drama) Pelle moved his business down to the village itself. The La Chaumine lodge was impressive.

If you are only going for a week, then I would highly reco...
We did not use a guide.  However my wife and I lived the season in La Grave a few years ago.  So we became more acoustom to the area.  I would say the shorter the stay the more I would recommend a guide.  If you do use a guide the skiers lodge package is a good way to go.  If you go that route I would recommend Keith Garvey.  He has guided there for many seasons.  He is motivated and enthusiastic.  Good guy.

If you dont use a guide finding good...
Awesome. Appreciate the current road beta!
I'm actively involved with planning a trip to La Grave for next season as we speak.
Any pictures. Edit: reread your post.... look forward to pics when you get back.
Did you use a guide at any time and did you feel the terrain Ok to ski without a guide?
What do you know about the Skiers' Lodge in La Grave??
you do a fine job with your b&w and duotones ... thx for posting conner
On the other hand there could be some names I might take a stand on  ::)

How about " Jarvis's Knob"......
Has a ring to it. ;D

or Aguille Dingdong
or Dent de Voght?
Ha!  That's the best survival strategy I've ever heard.  Makes me think of jumping out of a plane and grabbing onto another skydiver.  That's great.

Sounds like a fun trip -- that's a unique area back there.

So I've been wanting to do this tour for a while...but one of the things that scared me is the seeming existence of several avi chutes you must cross to exit the area after skiing the already avi prone main chute you guys nabbed.  is this true?

The exit  we chose is east facing, steep and long and takes you up to the ridge south of the Kendall Catwalk. It i...

Are there other names floating around for the subpeak of Unicorn?  It deserves a name in my book.

I've always thought of it as "Bicorn" (I guess to get even with who ever called the higher one to the north "Uni" :)).
But I don't feel strongy enough to take a stand on the matter.
It might be, nonetheless, fun to come to a consensus and...

I agree.  I think when we were camped out that way in January we proposed "Snow Bell's Corn".  :D

"the sweet terrain to ski in any avy condition"

There's a lot of beautiful skiing up there that is not avalanche terrain either because it is not steep enough or it has enough trees. We've skied there on high avalanche days and felt fine because we weren't on or near anything that could slide.
Way to get it done.

Sounds way more fun than skiing groomers at Sun Valley with snow cover that looks more appropriate for chukar hunting . . .

Yeah, those French keyboards are a treat, too!
Scotty, glad you and Stewie got some.  Sweet pics man!  :)
"the sweet terrain to ski in any avy condition"

Wondering if you could elaborate on this...

Cheers!

i'm going to skip the jealousy and go right to the "this is not fair" argument.

Kinda what I was thinking...

But I guess I should quash that impulse and just say "cool place you got there, thanks for sharing!"

I really wanted to Gary and was pretty close to headed up there but I stuck around sea level and did grown up stuff.
It sucked.  It seems that no matter how diligently I try to avoid responsibility, it sneaks up behind me and forces me to deal with it.  My master plan will have me clear of such trivial trib...
Foss Tarn it it shall be for me.  Thanks for chiming in Gary and Ron.

Are there other names floating around for the subpeak of Unicorn?  It deserves a name in my book.  I have been calling it Pollycorn to illustrate the irony of naming a triple spired mountain Uni anything but I recognize that, despite Mack's back handed endorsement, that my prerogative on the matter is of little consequence.

Looks like a nice trip. Thanks for the photos and TR!
Given all the warnings about the buried surface hoar layers in the South Chilcotins, it's good to hear you guys didn't find any signs of instability...
You must have climbed to Heather Point (the entire horseshoe shaped ridgeline is actually named Heather Ridge, the Skyline name is in common use because of the lake).  The north side of Heather drops to a wet meadow that the crest trail goes thru on its way to Lake Valhalla.  On a big snow year, when you look back up the slope from the bottom there is a group of rock outcrops that can look like a Happy Face.  I named it this when I first skied the slope (on toothpicks and tennis s...
Yeah, I'm liking "Foss Tarn" too, for the pond at the "Foss Saddle".
That's going onto the "Rosetta Stone" :)
I'm liking "Foss tarn "  Always feel weird calling it a lake.

I think your "no name peak" (aka 6524 on most USGS maps) is called Foss Peak. I've seen it named as such  on some other maps (Stanley Mt Rainier Centennial Edition for one) and I know a lot of the older locals call it that.

I'll second ron j---Snow bell is now an "older local"!  ;)
Sick video. It is getting me all excited to go out and do some serious touring. If weather and avi conditions permit, my brother and I are planning a split-board tour up Baker in the near future. I was wondering what sort of gear you guys brought with you? Did you guys bring mountaineering boots/crampons, rope, harness, snow pickets, etc. Or is it basically just a long long skin tour all the way up to the summit? This will be our first summit attempt on Baker. We have toured up toward the Black...

I’ll second Snow Bell; ron j for Name Czar!   ;D

A gracious gesture, Gary.
Fact is though, the majority of the feature/line names on my "Rosetta Stone" map came from you ;)

Sorry to be late to this party…just fired up a donated computer after 3 months without.

FWIW, the oldtimer who first took me on the Foss/Sunbeam loop back in the 70’s called ‘Castle Lake’ Foss Tarn.  It dries up most summers.   The standard Tatoosh access that many today call ‘Castle Saddle’ was then carefully referred to as Castle Shoulder to avoid confusion with the small pass between Pinnacle and Castle.  Pinnacle Saddle was where the summer trail “ends”.

That's some serious snow mountaineering.
Must have been exciting crossing that Hanging Glacier looking up and down all the way. Did you have to put skins back on after the ski into the deep gully while on the Hanging Glacier to cross it?
Excellent work and Kudos to Scole getting that great shot in the right light.
