Many thanks for the Cascade Backcountry Alliance link, an excellent summary!
This timed reservation system will exclude the 'Three Percenters.' No, not the fascist militia group, rather the
last slice of Americans without cell phones. I've never even used one, let alone owned one :o)
Even with a lifetime park pass, a #10/day reservation fee is not so "small" for those of us trying to live on a
$50/day fixed income. It's especially annoyin...
Thanks for taking a leadership role in this, Kyle and others. Comment submitted to MRNP. I support Alternative 2: Corridor Level Access Management and have advocated for online permit pickup as part of the change. The only bad part of skiing up there is having to drive in at peak hours to pick up the permit.
The Cascade Backcountry Alliance blog post (linked above) is well written and raises lots of interesting questions and concerns about MRNP's favored approach to solving the summer parking problem. The important thing the Backcountry Alliance does, in my mind, is address the concerns of the community of local skiers, climbers and hikers who visit the Park frequently and who's adventures take them far beyond the parking lots of Paradise and Sunrise. The concern of the Backcountry Alliance, and...
I had to make a correction. I accidently named crater Rock, Illumination Rock. Snowstomper.
Nice, Lane... how did you get to the Talum? Downclimb/ski from summit or something else? It's a little funkier than in my past travels there
Thanks for the inspiration, that crater run is sweet! Such a unique run.
A little update on conditions from yesterday: we took the summer trail and it was melted out below 4,200', solid snow once on the ridge at 4,600'. Roman wall was dusty with penitentes, glad we weren't skiing it. A couple bridges on the crater run that won't last much longer. Talum was smooth and excellent!
Robert, I hope so. If my memory is still good, Naches Peak is the first "bigger" objective I did on skis.
Thanks for the great TR.
Hey, thanks for the update on Chinook pass.
If my memory is still good, that was the first place I ever used skins.
My guess is you will have a long time to be grateful !
The Tatoosh is literally tattooed on my arm. I'm a big fan.
Thanks blackdog! It's easy to forget how spectacular the views are over there!
Congrats! The Tatoosh is the perfect place for the milestone. Love this.
Thank you, kamtron. Yes, our packs were dutifully guarded by the author while we did a lap. Snow was stickier than we'd hoped, and is going fast- but no pollen to speak of!
BBQ, fitting, I certainly felt like I was roasting in there! Hopefully no lava decides to fully cook you while chilling in crater
Right on, I really like the crater/Sherman linkup. I call it the BBQ tour.
Once again you are giving me some hope. Thanks for posting these.
First rate adventure and TR! Successful effort, and well done with excellent photos.
Thanks for the TR bump Kam. There are several un-skied peaks in this area... you should plan on one. Martin Peak, Lyall would be the ones to attempt via this approach (along with Dark peak of course... recommended) . Once you're on top of the col / ridge that separates Dark from Lyall, it should be fairly straightforward. Not sure about Martin... My ski partner Scott K. attempted it solo the first time we attempted Dark Peak, but turned back. Martin might not go...
Thanks for posting a great report. What a trip!
Sweet trip, mountain loop is such a great zone
Beautiful photos! That line down the Kennedy is super cool
ive always meant to get up there. Armond and crew skied it in the late 90s I believe
@Dylan Do you happen to have other photos of Spider you would be willing to send my way? Thanks for the cool TR. That's mighty fast
Awesome! I've only been back there a couple times on foot but it always seemed like it had a lot of skiing potential.
Bummer about the break-in :(
Great photos provide the "look" of the snow coverage in areas I ski.
Thanks.
avajane, you're correct, I believe there is a winter cat skiing op on Bailey

Thanks, eatskisleep! Yeah it was really cool to get back there, and also to see Blanca Lake from above! As well as stunning views of Sloan, etc.
Cool…Is that the place that has a Snowcat operation in the winter?
Score!! Bony times in the North lands. Have fun down there!
Thanks for the report, this one always seemed so cool to me. Probably had the whole place to yourself! And man, sorry to hear about your car! So frustrating that just parking at a TH these days is a reason to get a window busted in.
Thanks for the report. Not sounding promising for mid June on Thielson. Hoping for better on the other four volcanoes.
As of 5/24, you have to walk a couple miles on the Thielsen trail before reaching snow. South face is still skiable from a couple hundred feet below the Chicken Ledge and melting fast. NW bowls hold more snow, but also some rock beginning to show.
Mt Bailey has snow all the way down to the road, and is a better bet if you want to ski to the car (in the next couple weeks or so!). I did way more walking out than I would have liked on Thielsen.
Cool You got out there! Any thoughts on how the road might be now after all this heat? Considering whether it’s worth it to bring bikes.
Nicely done video. Definitely a good area to visit. Avoiding the cliff scramble when there's snow is totally worth it.
Nice! Keep posting and put in some pics for those of us chilling up North
Excellent. Looking forward to a report.
Wish I was going now. With out generally warm spring weather, it is becoming apparent that my annual June ski trip needs to become and annual May ski trip.
blackdog I'm not sure but hoping to gather more Intel on the Southern OR peaks in the next week...
Heading south Mid June: Diamond, Scott, Thielson, Bailey, and McLoughlin. Concerned the heat jacked an otherwise fat snow pack. Any thoughts what things in the south might look like in a month?
Andrew,
Pretty similar to that. My fav varies in the last third a little west from that
I pass the tarn.,skip the first gulley on your left then slight left to gain the wide ridge and hook right to exit to road on west side of Sunbeam.
Occasionaly we ski this late winter with longer days and lots of flat work!
Gary Vogt and Ed Strauss introduced me to this drainage years ago. Leather boots and skinny skis era
Robie
Thanks for report and pictures….
And how are your pictures straight and not randomly sideways? I post with my IPhone.
