what perfect timing for a hut trip!  Was wondering what the terrain looked like up there, thanks for sharing the pics.
That looks like a great trip.  Glad you guys were able to enjoy the storm snow gifts.  Pete, you are taking some great pictures this year.  Stunning.
Yanna and I got a little ways up the ridge left of the bowl in May '93 before lightning started hitting the ridge across the highway, with the weather clearly moving our way, so we bailed short of our first 'teener. Some locals who were above us were nice enough to show us a quick exit, as the way we'd climbed had us packing the skis for a bit to cross over a knoll on the lower portion. We heard thunder up from where we'd come as we headed into the trees on the other side of...
Hey, who gave you permission to post this? I guess I will for all the trail breaking you did. I'm gonna start eating french fries & cookie dough so next time we tour I'll have a bit more weight to break trail. Thanks for being such an entertaining ski partner!
Snake looked rather thin from the north, but it seemed like anyone with a nose for snow could find good skiing in the San Juans right now. Too high, and the north-facing stuff looked lightly windhammered.

In the upper photo, if Susan had stepped off the age-hardened skintrack, her Kilowatts would've gone at least boot-deep into 2-3' of fine grained sugar.

I-90 over Snoqualmie was a slushfest on the way home last night... some things never change.
I think it's pretty up there, too.  Thanks for the photos.  I'm pleasantly surprised by how snowy it is.  That bodes well.  I think the San Juans are doing better in relative terms than a lot of other areas!  (New Mexico too, thankfully.)

Wild, windy Colorado!  Quandary is a good one for epics. I think every mountaineer should have one on their resume.

Amen.

No epic for us this time, though we had to break out all the cold weather accoutrements and gusts approached knockdown strength. Maybe ten people topped out?

Anyone skiing this route in winter may be interested in
Wow - thanks for sharing!

What was dumb about that? What did smithbrook teach you? Sorry I don't understand what the better option would have been. Please elaborate.

Sorry, I didn't really explain.  Just route selection for the day.  Everytime I get to Rainy Pass I look back and say "next time I'm going a different way".  The road is long and flat,...
Always thought that would be a good area.  Thanks for sharing.  What mile post is that snowpark?  Maps?  GPS tracks?
What a fabulous looking trip Marcus and crew...perfect way to clear the demons...5 weeks i hope to get rid of mine!!! ;D
Cool - I bet it skied a lot differently in springy December, but seems like that area has some good spring time touring potential. But let's hope that is many months distant!
Nice viddy, Gregg.
Looked fun.

We were in a hurry to get to Jove, so we opted to ski down from the pass.  That was dumb, but smithbrook always seems to teach me something (that I promptly forget).

Hey man, happy new year to you too! It's all good as they say...              ... but some of it is better.

Jeff - thanks for the reports up your way via TAY and the FOAC Exchange!

My pleasure Garth.  I'm glad you are finding the reports useful.  I don't envy your job.  Our goal is to send you more information this year.  Hopefully we can follow through with that.

Nice job you guys, looks like pretty fantastic snow.  Glad to see you back out there trenching out the powder, Marcus.
Nice - that's a fun area.  We hit Jack a few weeks back in 50 degree temps.  Hopefully the weather stays snowy from here on out!
Such a good tour.  The nice thing about Jove is how many good options there are if that big open face isn't speaking to you.  The slopes down the backside toward Janus are always calling me, but I have yet to have time to add them onto a tour out there.
We only missed out on 200-ft of vert, and had a really great run.  I thought it was probably stable for skiing, but my partner had concerns.  Our philosophy is not to push if the consequences of a mistaken evaluation are big.  Since we had a nice alternative run to the main face and we were observing persistent soft slabs, it was a pretty easy decision for us.  Another group may have chosen differently and likely been fine on the face.  :)
I believe I was eyeing your tracks from the Triple-60 lift and was jealous I couldn't wake up early enough for a tour. Nice work!
Sweet!!!

Nice outing gang!

We must have just missed you. There was no bodies at Scenic when we passed. I was wondering where the cat was and if they where in operation yet. Windy looked great from our vantage point to the south.

Glad to see you out there enjoying some winter powder Marcus.

For once one of your video posts don't piss me off while I am at work :)  Great video.  Loved the over the top day shots.  12 inches in 4.5 hours will do that.  A wonderful four days of skiing....

Windjacked sastrugified windslab over bottomless hoar

Our family is constantly asking us to move to Colorado to be closer to them. I think this will be our new line of defense. Thanks Charlie!

Groovy, Silas.  We were nearby on NYD, harvesting pow stashes near Kendall Lakes.

Ducks win the Rose Bowl!  Yeah, baby!
judging by the number and flavor of ski reports lately from Silas I would say he is enjoying his retirement...
Happy New Years, Ron.  You seem to have the NE matra well in hand: Challanging Snow is better than No Snow.  And twice as good on Sundays.
Sick!

Cool shot skinning through the trees.

Looking at Jove today and couldn't see your tracks, but it sure looked nice.

Super photo's thanks for sharing
I didn't know Lucy skied !
Great restraint,  hard to pass up the whole shot.  Thanks for post, and pictures.
Hell yeah. Today was awesome. No crowds and untracked pow left and right.
I just threw up all over my keyboard looking at your nice photos showing all of the snow!

We have zero in the Sierras.... :(  I'm going to counseling tomorrow....
Hey nice meeting and riding with you and Tyler. It was a great day indeed. Here's a few shots.

Stefan, great photos, glad you could join us.  Quite a nice day.
auspicious start to the new year.  good stuff.

stefan-- good meeting you up top.

skinup & brad-- you ripped the exact line for the second half of the descent that i was thinking on the skin up.  nice choice.  sloppy thirds was still good.  :)

love the top third with all of the steep alleys into small open fields.

happy new year all!

OMG !!! Zap you broke trail.  ;D The pictures look darn good sounds like you had fun great start to the New Year.
Great to see you guys got it again
I love the 2nd image! Nice day out -
Happy new year
I love the video --the dogs and the Technotronic remix crack me up, and the turns look pretty awesome. Thanks for posting.

Andrew
Hit the slot this morning with partner Brad.  It was firm/wind affected a good way down, then softer for the lower 1/3.  The Phantom snow was much better, so we came back around and hopped on the skintrack back up to the slot entrance, riding the Phantom from there.

Beautiful day.
nice, was gonna head there tomorrow but looks like a warm front is happening.
Well done Zap---first TR of the new year!  8)
That looks like fun. I almost gave you a call... figured you were getting out, but I knew Snoqualmie mountain was going to deliver the goods!
What a way to send out 2011! Great day with a great crew, thanks to the young bucks who broke trail most of the day!!

My TR on NWH.
Silas great to share lunch with you guys and celebrate the return of winter
Great tour. I assume you and Mac allowed young Dave to break trail in those new light skis with the unique bases.  ;)

I usually skin an hour from the parking areas, and I use a fanny pack (for 4 hrs of laps). - think pow

How does the probe and shovel fit in there?  Gotta say the girl impressed me with her full day tour pack, humbled me and made me proud at the same time.  :)
