Sadly the plow came. There was wailing, there were tears. The kids had to be dissuaded from staging a Tiananmen Court moment.
Fortunately there still were the power lines up the hill above the court.
When the run is only 6 feet wide, it's hard to convince the dogs to stay out of your fresh powder. But it turned out that getting 2 or three dogs to break track ahead really does make it easier.

We found lovely packed powder on Dravus in Magnolia. 325 vertical feet per run over .4 miles, about a minute and a half per run. We logged about 2,000 v.f. feet for the evening...

me on Alan's skis...
Hey dude, watch where you're waving that Whippet thing!
Actually, alecapone was tearing up the slopes paralleling on my tele rig this week at Stevens.

wow that looks like way more fun that i had at work! time to get my butt up to the mountain....
Can't believe you didn't call me for this "once in a decade or more" descent. Congratulations.
Nice write-up, Amar. I love the pictures of your skis in the doorway pre- and post-trip.
I skinned into the office this AM. It was a bit slushy in some places, but otherwise a novel way to get to work.

You guys make me miss my old neighborhood. There's not nearly as many fun lines in Fremont (nor is there as much snow). Conditions in the 'Fremont Slot' (aka the alley behind my apartment) are treacherous today. I don't think you could get up or down it without crampons!
Sweet TR; glad you got after it, Amar! The touring was lovely in Wallingford even as late as midnight.
You weren't the only one! Here's some footage hitting the kicker at 17th and 94th:

Someday I'd like to make a snow-day pilgrimage to 4th Avenue North, near the Fremont Bridge. It's where the historic "ski leaping" exhibition was held during the Big Snow of 1916.
One of these days we should re-enact that exhibition. Let's hope for a big dump in 2016!
That's really interesting! I had walked by the base...
Nice Amar!
I know Garfield Street. It's right next to WRQ, where I worked in the late 90s. I used to do ski conditioning on that hill during lunch breaks. It's a steep hill.

What jacket is that Lowell? Looks like the new Montane wind jacket I just got and tried this week - works great for cold weather.
It's an Arcteryx windbreaker. At least five years old. I like it because it's feather-light and at one time it did a pretty good job of shedding snow without being too warm. But the DWR treatment seems to be getting old and I was...
Nice! Thanks for the fun TR and extra effort to record it!

Nice TR, Lowell. I was curious about how you did the photography too, and planned to post a question after finishing my own TR, but Jason beat me to it while I was writing. Thanks for the info.
Always cracking me up Scott....let's get some season appropriate photos in this thread ASAP:

Hi Pat -
I think I may have talked with you Sunday morning prior to your ski up Sandy Butte - I think we talked about Sandy and other sled assisted options up the hwy. My wife Teanna and I also stayed at the country inn last weekend but we were flat tracking all weekend. Funny we didn't cross paths earlier during meals but it was a pretty full house and we must have sat at different tables...

Did you have a photographer for your historic tour, Lowell? I'm even more impressed if you set those shots up via a timer. Excellent composition, and some interesting backgrounds to tell the tale. Well done.
For the fourth photo, above, I asked some passing students if they would hold the camera. The others were done with a gorilla pod and self-timer....

I love trips like these Lowell.
Teanna and I have been extending our long weekend of skiing in Mazama here in Redmond - going on 7 days straight. I'm lucky to be able to work from home the past few days so haven't had to drive at all. Skiing in Farrel MacWirther, Pipeline Trail and Hartman Park getting better each day.
Got to love grocery shopping with skis. Part of me envies those further east who can ski out their door all winter long. Looks like it might come...

Dragging knuckles even on skis! You can't help it, can you?
Ahh yes, one of my best memories of working at UW and living by the Burke Gilman trail, the four or five days of skiing into work during the 80s, 90s, and 00s. Way to continue the tradition.
How about the viaduct? I can't believe it is still open. Put some barricades up and hit it tonight?
3 for the price of 1 !
As a bonus on Monday one of our teams encountered a pair of day slowshoers who got lost after watching Mr. Kim slide down on Sat.
At least one overnight party made it out Monday evening.
Last I heard there were two parties of two overdue from Camp Muir, but the weather has been so bad the search parties have not made it above Panorama Pt.

There's about a minute and a half of thrilling downhill on Ravenna, provided you have a car spotter.

Nice Charles! It's amazing that such a thin layer of snow can be skiable without hitting the base.
I love the "Grumpy Postman Couloir." Is that near the "AWOL Paper Boy Chute?" We haven't seen him for a few days. ;)
Then there's "Overflowing Garbage Can Alley." The Maple Leaf Range has no shortage of ski runs in weather like this.

Great pics!
Looks a lot like where I was skiing along the Strait yesterday. Those swells made me glad I was on land! It was howling!

Great TR and route choice. I have only taken the Low Route, down in the ravine (the Short Bus Route?), which is has quite a bit more ups and downs, and probably was not so good after it got icy.
It was lumpy, but enough coverage for normal ski options a couple weeks ago. Now, different story. The snowpack has probably more than doubled.
James - Glad to see you are shredding the local gnar. Whenever you and mike head out on your next big adventure, give a holler. Evan
Awesome! It reminded me of skiing to school in the Midwest. There was one big downhill section that we used to race down to the doors of the bandroom. We called that the Cross-Country route 'cause it was similar to our xc routes for track. I like your 'Haute Education Route'. Chances are repeats will be rare!
That's great Lowell -- this time last year I skied to a physical therapy appointment a few blocks from my house. It's always fun to see the city from the kick/glide/hum of the fishscale skis (my XC gear is not quite the wax-vintage).
Nice TR. Makes me think I should go to campus tomorrow, just to see it covered in snow.
Beautiful turns. Looks like you timed it right!
I had a fun ski down Charlestown hill from 55th to the beach. Didn't hit concrete once...fun stuff. Wife had cocoa w/ Fluff vodka waiting when I got home. Made the afternoon conference call a little less boring.
Fantastic pictures and report, huge salt points for that trip, thanks.
Lucky u, using the dh boards! Edmonds road crews sprayed too much gravel, so slid the hills on streets using the beater xc gear. Still fun to zip down faster than the cars. More tomorrow, except more like World Cup courses with the injected ice...
Snow held up for more Topaz Court laps today, looks like tomorrow will still be okay. Got to convince people to stop parking at the bottom, right at the run-out.
And no Mack, we had an adventure tour a couple of weeks ago through partial white out on the day you were already skiing elsewhere.

Thanks for the WS tour tips -- we've only been here since October so all ski route advice appreciated. And the Liberty text is good advice too. Could have used her headlamp by the end of the pm tour through Schmitz park. Some pretty icy descents on the streets -- think we might have some rain crusts and buried icy layers to deal with later in the season.
You can't really ski into Lake Ann from Artist Point. Maybe you meant into the swift creek drainage? Or perhaps you were skiing down towards Bagley Lakes?
Thanks Tom.
Got your location dialed in now. This is very helpful.
FWIW, Hidden Dragon is kind of a nick name for that little section, the real run name is "Dino's Revenge". I always manage to get these confused. ;-)

To update that 2nd photo:
"Give me your tired, poor, your huddled masses
Yearning to breathe free-heel,
I lift my headlamp beside the golden door!"

Yet again I just chucked up all over my keyboard looking at the nice photos of snow you have ..... we still have nothing. But, something ugly is rolling in over the hills. I smell it; I feel it; and I can even taste it. So I hope I didn't gas up my snowblower for nothing....

Nice!
As a WS denizen, one of my favorite spots for turns during days like these is that little park above Alki, just where California turns down the hill to Alki- Hamilton Viewpoint park. Has good angle and some fall line, grass underneath, and if there's enough snow the road itself can be sweet (as long as no one is driving on it!!).
I always though...

I'll be making some turns on the steep side of Cherry Street down to the lake again today.

Hi Erik,
If you look at the trail map online - http://www.summitatsnoqualmie.com/files/pdf/SummitEastMap2010.pdf
I believe it was where the first black diamond symbol is on the top left. There's a chance it was where the diamond below that one is. We de-skinned by the lift hut, skied a wee bit left and down to above the first steeper section. 100'+ vertical below that point is a small steep roll, then it drops another 100' or so before flattening out and join...
