The photos are great. Jill and I only skied the south side on a powder day. ;)
If you get the maps is there any reason to get the guide book, West Kootenay touring guide?

That's a great area. Did you go north or south?
We made a quick powder stop there a few years ago. Wish we had more time...
What do you think of those bighorn maps? Pretty useful?
It is a pretty awesome area I drive through there for work a bunch of times during the year. First time I stopped.
We did both... Two laps south f...
Just a few more...
-John and Tonda enjoying some scrambling near the top
- Looking out on some serious terrain; on the second day...on the lower flank of the NE chute
-super steep slope right to the creek bed...which I had the glory of getting first...on the second day's outing, on the way home ;D

Thanks Mat! We will have to get after this, one of these days...conditions are primo right now!
Here are a couple more...
-Tonda and John skinning up the east aspect after farming the wide open, steep slopes...notice the canyon way down below...that is the start from the road
-the north bowl and my turns on the left, with the guys taking the right side; funneling down through the trees...notice the green tree....Tonda, and all, decided that tree was bad!
-the top of the NE chute, and ridge between that and the north bowl...super-duper!

Awesome video and killer terrain.
Love the photos. The slot is such a fun line.
Glad to hear the Olympics are still in good condition... I hope they hold out. I skied with GaryH and Jan in December and we enjoyed excellent conditions. I think they mentioned you as a mighty trail breaker :)
I'm sure it was nice to have a break. We should ski sometime ;D

I thought about riding those chutes on saturday but chose the other skin track that went to the false summit of herman instead to get a longer steeper run. Everyone that had gone that way dropped in off the other side so i had the only line on that face, at least at the time.
Very nice, Edgesport! We skied the Old Chute and the White River Headwall and saw your tracks below. You picked a very aesthetic line and put some great tracks in! Strong work.
Nice job on the pics Bryan and thanks for posting the write-up.
We're you guys gonna boot up or go around?
Doing an a-b from Tilley Jane -> cooper spur->down to gnarl->up pea gravel->down to Clark/Heather-->out to HRM is pretty fun way to do it.
nice trip, fellas!
we skied the NW Couloir on the 13th, will try to get some pics up tonight, if any turned out.
as we grunted up that skintrack (thx) i kept wondering if it wouldn't be more efficient to boot in the trees in those conditions--thanks for confirming my suspicions, Jonn-E.

Thanks for another great day out Jonn-E!
The Southwest face of point 5524 provided us one hell of a consolation prize.

We saw your headlamps from the parking lot, then later in the morning saw you two across the valley approaching Winnie's slide on the upper white Salmon. When we found that the NW Couloir was not "in" we briefly considered heading over to the White Salmon but decided that it would have the same variable boot snag due to a similar aspect. Guess we were wrong!
About the skin track out: I know who put it in (not my party), and there was much cursing involved. I...

Thanks for the post, I just moved to Portland from Seattle so just learning the good spots to tour. On a couple trips to newton I noticed all the nice lines on gnarl. Thinking the southern aspect might be pretty good next weekend. Any recommendations on how to approach it? Seemed like going up pea gravel and skiing down and back up wasn't a bad option. But I'm sure there'...
Myself and a couple other guys left some of the lines down the west face of Hermans Saddle shown in your last picture. That particular run is one of my favorites.

What a great day. Not to often you get light snow, no wind, sunshine, and views like that! How lucky we are...

Yes! I grew up fishing on Priest Lake and loved the name on the maps in the lodges. When I was 14 I hiked to the top of Phoebe. Respect tradition!
Congratulations on finding an untracked line within a 5 mile radius of the Upper Parking Lot by Sunday. That place has become a zoo!

McGill Shoulder loooks good and the shots of the second part look great. ;)
The back half of the trip was good for sure!! Made it really hard to be sitting at my desk today. Good thing is that I won't have to wait to long. Out on another trip starting Friday! Hoping to get some more stuff done in the Kootenays!

That looked worth your time!
Mikeski4 and Mikeski5 are great shots!
Thanks for sharing.

Our plan was Gnarl that day but a late start changed our target. Good thing to because all southern aspects were a mix of ice, strugi, and windblown so hard edging was difficult. All those cornices are going make rubble piles of those faces with the warm temps up there right now.
Tale of two drainages.......sa. You going to hit gnarl this week? Should be prime.
I guess we chose poorly, Newton was downright dangerous yesterday. Watched several spills and ejections from the ridge due to variable surfaces before bailing for the groomers. Noticed several crowns on the rollover into Heather from MHM.

Balls. Knowing what that area looks like combined with your pics and words made me feel a lump in my throat as if I was there.

You wanna play tour guide, and show us the goods?
Love to, but I live in Boise now. John Monks is your man. He's in Sandpoint.
Might be sufficient for you, kevino?

Do you have any high-res or full size pictures of the south side of rainier? thanks.
Yes, but some of the photos were taken with iPhone, are not very hi-res.

Extra nice report and pictures ! Fantastic day eh ? You actually met two people from Ky. Dave and I (KY) leap frogged you all the way up. I kept talking to the guy my age with the Bultaco sticker on his skis.
From the pics it appears you skied down into The Sunbeam drainage. We stopped short of Foss peak then skied down the Eastern shoulder into the same drainage and exited same as you across Reflection lake.
I also talked with the other KY guy as I...

I agree.
Skied/ boarded the Norse Peak south summit again & a bit of Cement basin on the east side and encountered what can only be described as righteous powder all the way up & down. It's really fast & super stable.
The menace rain-crust is still there on the west aspects, about 12" down, the totally unconsolidated dry powder sits pretty well on top. There is also a wind crust towards the ridge on the N/W aspect.
Saw 2 skiers & 1 boot...

Even more bold than the first telling would suggest. So glad you can tell the story. Just gripping. thanks!
