We ran into you guys as we exited Granite - did your pups make the trip with you? Pretty impressive...
Missed you by a few minutes!  Plenty of vitamin D was had, for sure.
That shot of you guys downclimbing the ID route is pretty spot on, it was pretty puckering with that crevasse down below that few hundred feet of front-pointing.

Was nice meeting you up there on your way down as we were headed up.

Yes.  Gerard Depardieu.  He built a stone hut under the Nisqually Bridge to avoid paying Russian Taxes.  That's the buzz anyway...

Cool descent CC.  Glad you got after it!

"Paisible ? À la fraîche ? Décontracté du gland ?" - Les Valseuses.  Good description of the day.
Sorry Jake...my zoom length was not strong enough to capture your adventures in the Crystal BC  from Columbia Crest... ;) Une autre fois.
Quelques autres photos pour le plaisir.
Une aventure magnifique, des moments superbes, seuls en montagne.  La vie est belle  :)
Did the road have snow on it? The vertical on that thing surprised me when i did it. Little bit of annoying cliff terrain to get through just beyond your photo.
On our way out of the parking lot today, we found a pair of  AT boots that appeared to be left behind. We brought them to the Lone Fir Resort Cafe in Cougar (where you register for permits) and the woman working there said they would be brought to the Forest Service office in Amboy (360-247-3900).

Gunn peak 2.. also known as gunn shy, officially the high poinf of jump off ridge.

Still to date one of my favorite local decents!

It was my partner leyland and I that skied it a week after your suggestion. Thank you much. too bad you couldnt join us then. The road wasnt so bad two yeras ago, and i rember floating all the way back to the index galena rd. Fairly easily.

Thought about doing it during this high pressure. I went up the forrest road to heybrook a few...
I love the map. Thanks for posting. Have to try some of these out.
I wanted to comment this morning but was too busy  loading car with skis.
Hey ,A very nice report on a cool area that often gets bypassed.
Ditto on the Chinook peak name but that's the first Ive heard it called Deadwood peak .
Makes sense.
Chainsaw no,  handsaw should be OK within wilderness,  maintaining a pre-existing trail.

...was there a Frenchman involved in this trip....?

Can you say "chocolate-covered ginger"?
His nose is too big to fit under the Nisqually bridge. I suspect.........another.
we used the chainsaw monday to clear the road... what a great week to be up there! awesome decent and great edit!

@silas.  i was going to do this yesterday...but i was an idiot and went for gunn peak again...all north facing with a crappy 4mi logging road approach and THEN 3.5k of climing.  needles so say i climed 3k vert which was just the logging road and then had to turn around and get impaled by fallen trees.
you from montana burns?  granite be my stomping grounds...and you're right they got the elevation all wrong...course there could be another granite in the beartooths....
not that it matters, but wherever that list is from got the MT granite peak's elevation wrong. its 12,799 not 10640
that looks siiick
Juneuary touring on Granite: It is fantastic to harvest corn with an eclectic group of fog busting ski enthusiasts without spending more than 50 minutes traveling from Seattle.
Looked like a great outing, I absolutely LOVED the video.

Thanks

Don

PS.  Where's "this" Goat mountain at?
I remember going up to Herman's Saddle in the early 90's with a busy day being two other skiers, yep there are more folks in the backcountry, but the tracks are erased with the next snow fall.
I had read in past reports of guys going up Ruth Creek in the early spring, to access Ruth Mt, but I've never given the Nooksack Cirque any thought.  I think on the next longer winter dry spell I might pack up the bivy gear and head up.

Thanks for the report, great photos.

Don
Cool trip.  Looks like the peakbagging crowd calls that mountain "Deadwood" and the one with the long sw slope run, that you skied first, "Chinook".  Thanks for the TR, always wanted to ski that.

Is Big Berth the long track that comes off Crystal Lookout and crosses 410 and the NPS White River Road?
Great report!  Any signs of significant recent instability on the south face?
I LIKE IT (all)!

why do snowshoers snowshoe in the skin track?

Because it's there.  George Leigh Mallory
Great report, Darin.  Love the hoarfrost.
I'll add to the beta pile:
Climbed today, icy conditions due to wind, ski crampons and you were golden though, our timing was  little early so we hung out for a  couple hrs below the top and waited.  Corn after 1 from the top. Sweet turns to the runout.  Crazy warm for January.

The climb did leave me with one question, why do snowshoers snowshoe in the skin track?
Yep, the Granite Mountain south of Canada and north of Mexico!  :)
We were up the weekend before during prime ski conditions, 12"+ of unconsolidated low density snow on top of increasing density base made for excellent turns.  The windslab and evidence of recent slide activity on steeps at higher elevations kept us from a Larrabee attempt. Two days and one brisk night (highs in the mid teens) gave us ample time to ski just about every line we could above the lakes  ;). Put the track in from 542 with no signs of snowmo activity all weekend-a big surprise co...
Weird. I was up at Winchester tuesday, which was I think the first day it went from fluff to schmoo, and was surprised to find no signs of snowmobiles whatsoever.  All I had to grumble about was a couple of guys who had spent 4 nights at the lookout and tracked the place out :)
Nice work, I was eying Larabee myself but just had a day out!

We parked just past twin lakes road on a small turnout before the switchback to the ski resort.  No arrangements necessary, just a forest pass and then a 5 minute walk up the road to the "shuksan" and a large plow in where all the snowmachines start from.

We tried the summer route to Larrabee and it doesn't go.  Ski fall li...

Nice Bram, your making a good go of your return to the NW!  hope i can make it next trip.
That new lift will change the game. The cat is running skiers in and out of the grey area. Now.

Looking at that plewman area the back side tree runs look sooooooooooo good.

Going to explore there more Wednesday.

Well done, I've been waiting til spring to head out there. One of my favorite areas. Jealous
combat skiing :)
Thanks for sharing!  Been eyeing this one for a while now.  Dreading the skin up the road.  Some things I've been curious about... Did you park at DoT?  Is there any arrangement to be made there?  Did you follow the summer trail route from Winchester to Larabee?
Sounds like a great trip! Good work. I'm not familiar with this area, where might it be, if you don't mind my asking?
Dang, I was up there on Sunday 1/13 and it was straight water ice on most of the south face. I was able to find some firm wind blown stuff in the bottom of the gulleys though. Also, I accidently rode off a very large cornice, dang thing came out of nowhere haha, landing was solid ice but I rode it out!  I'm glad someone was able to get some decent turns in on the beast :)

Oh and in reference to:

Perhaps I saw you up there?  Solo, splitboard with crampons, descended around 1pm.

Do you have a link for picture with route names? It's nice to have the names somewhat standardized in such a heavily used area :(.

Pretty icy conditions today, Friday 1/18. Essentially booted from the beggining of the flows to the summit.  Sat on the sumit for over an hour and the ice was edgeable  before 1.  Corn once we crossed over the ridge.
Definitely a once and a while opportunity! That face is pretty scary, when the snow is ready to flush out...glad you have experienced the Tiger Pk/Burke Canyon area...what a great destination!
